To consider wearing slipper at work?

rollon2020 · 10/11/2019 20:01

Slightly lighthearted but I would actually love to be able to!
I lecture at a university, so I wouldn't consider it for the days I'm student facing.
However, I have an admin day once a week, where I barely move from my desk, I share with two guys who aren't always in.
There is a small chance students will come to see me or I may pop in to the office a couple of doors down the corridor
Could I get away with the boot slippers??

Family - lots of work places are like this surely? If every work environment was casual there would be no market for suits.

People vying for promotion is also quite common, subtly undermining the competition. Competitiveness over hours worked etc.

However, form what I have read in the press old Donald isn’t exactly I to the long hour culture😊

GetOffTheTableMabel · 11/11/2019 08:45

Birkenstock’s clogs are your friend. They even have ones with furry linings.

MarianaMoatedGrange · 11/11/2019 09:09

No. Wearing slob casual dress while you're working detracts from your work ethic.

Twaddle. There are many styles of slippers that look very shoe/bootlike. We're not taking traditional fluffy slippers here! I don't see how having comfortable feet detracts from the work ethic Confused

lotsofoysters · 11/11/2019 09:16

Go for it. I had a lecturer who used to wander round the department barefoot.

Have you ever been to a university? Academics mostly look like they got dressed in the dark.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 11/11/2019 09:38

*My work, environment is high pressure, competitive and can be cutthroat. You never know when you are going to be called into a very important meeting. Jeans for example are an absolute no. Men debate whether they can get away with not wearing a tie.

Walking into a meeting with a multi million pound client while wearing large, fluffy slippers is odd. Ballet slippers would probably just look like shoes and be okay.*

But you'd be wearing slippers at your desk. Obviously if you were going to A Very Important High-pressured Meeting Dontcha Know, you would put your shoes on as you are not completely devoid of common sense.

rollon2020 · 11/11/2019 13:57

Obviously when I leave more than just my office or the one near by (who are all colleagues and not managers) I would put my other shoes on.

One of the reasons I'm considering it is that we should be able to work from home, but I have an indirect manager who takes issue with this and often "needs" people with short notice. So I go in to save the drama.

I see it as surely it's better me being in comfy and cosy working on my admin than being at home in my pjs where I would rather be

As much as i would love to take my pink fluffy unicorn slippers in, I'll stick to subtle ones!

I used to have a pair of moshulu slippers on black that looked like ballet shoes, used to wear to work and no one was any the wiser

OhJustElfOff · 11/11/2019 14:05

In black even.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 11/11/2019 17:23

I used to work from home very frequently, but ALWAYS put clothes on as well as shoes. Not full office dress, but definitely not jammies and slippers.

I just can't get into that work mindset if I'm slobbing out in bedwear.

It also provides a physical demarcation for me between work and leisure. Coming home/logging off means changing into different clothes, and that's important for me to feel like I'm actually off duty.

rollon2020 · 11/11/2019 18:06

@EvenMoreFuriousVexation I'm not saying I would stay in my pjs
I completely agree about state of mind
I still have to actually get up with DH at 6:30 and drop DD at nursery so I'm still showered dressed and even make up when I do work from home

All sorry I am taking loads of abuse here. I was talking about my specific colleague.

I bow out when it gets nasty - so best of luck with the comfy shoes/slippers,
.

housebuyingistheworst · 11/11/2019 19:09

@EvenMoreFuriousVexation hahaha, good one! If you're serious, I'm sorry your only source of work ethic is footwear. Grin

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 11/11/2019 19:10

Just the one?

QuestionableMouse · 11/11/2019 19:12

As a student I wouldn't care as long as the teaching was up to snuff.

KurriKurri · 11/11/2019 19:38

I have these slippers which are quite boot like
And these boots which are furry inside and quite slipper like.

I wouldn;t care if you wore slippers to work - I'd be jealous and bring mine in next day. Warmth is everything in my world.

WaterOffADucksCrack · 11/11/2019 19:49

I'd rather see someone in slippers than ugg boots Envy

Seriously though just get some comfortable shoes that fit properly. It's like when people say work clothes are uncomfortable, I just think they must have the wrong style or fit for their size and shape.

WombatStewForTea · 11/11/2019 19:52

@recklessruby I'm a teacher and often wander the classroom barefoot or on slippers! When our deputy head was teaching she'd always wear slippers! I've not done it in a while but this thread has reminded me how awesome it was so I'm bringing back the slippers

inwood · 11/11/2019 19:57

I'm barefoot most of the time at work, client facing heels are on, under my desk who cares!

FavouriteSoul · 11/11/2019 20:02

I have found a brilliant pair of memory foam insoles that make my work shoes (registered nurse, on my feet for the majority of my 12.5 hour shift) feel like slippers. I got them from Aldi and they are magnificent. I still look highly professional but I feel as if my feet are wrapped in cotton-wool.

rollon2020 · 11/11/2019 21:49

@WaterOffADucksCrack the thing is I have quite a long commute with nearly 40 mins walking at 30 mins train (often standing each way) with it getting colder I guess I'm finding the shoes I want to travel in for comfort aren't best at work. I live in TOMs during the summer but it's too cold to now wear them the rest of the day

Look like? My husband actually does. He went to work wearing mismatching shoes one day.

WaterOffADucksCrack · 12/11/2019 07:19

In that case can you take another pair of shoes?

rollon2020 · 12/11/2019 08:16

@ThatssomebadhatHarry BlushI realised after there were quite a few posts, but a pair of slippers yes 🙈

OP posts:
rollon2020 · 12/11/2019 08:18

@WaterOffADucksCrack my outfit varies depending if I'm teaching/meeting/exams/marking I just thought slippers rather than several different styles (which I can't afford) might be the best choice, easy to switch if I needed to head out
