To think she's in the UK

Anyone who has a bit of tech knowledge greatly appreciated here....

My friend is abroad. Been there since Weds due back tomorrow morning. I've called her mobile a couple of times, got the international dial tone, as per normal.

Today, called at lunch. International tone still. She's told me again she's flying back in the morning. I called her just now to double check flight time and it's ringing with a standard UK ringtone like the phone is in the UK?

Does this mean she's in the UK now? She's a really good long term friend with no reason at all to fib. There's literally no reason why she'd tell me she was back tomorrow morning instead of tonight (it's like 14hrs difference) so can this happen by accident? Google is not helping.

I know she's on EE. Could the phone have picked up a UK network out there (Cyprus) and that's why the dial tone has changed this evening.

I hope this is a common occurrence with phones, I'm just a bit "hmmmmm" because since it's rung like it's in the UK she hasn't read my WhatsApps or returned the call.

Please tell me you've had experience of this to put my mind at ease. I know it's really none of my business at the end of the day, but I'd like to know if she could still be legitimately out there and it's just the phone playing silly buggers.

Thank you in advance...

What a friendship ...

FineWordsForAPorcupine · 10/11/2019 15:39

All you had to do, OP, was slightly change how you laid our your opening post:

  1. title your thread "is my friend a CF - five hour round trip to pick her up?
  2. mention the mysterious UK dial tone
  3. add in your childcare needs

...and you'd have had a thread with 500 people 100% convinced that the friend was lying to you and had sneaked back into the UK for her own nefarious purposes. Posters would have frothed at the mouth with indignation on your behalf, and come up with ever more elaborate ways you could tell your friend to fuck off.

You'd have been a mumsnet hero :)

YeOldeTrout · 10/11/2019 15:46

ha! omg, I've been on MN 17.5 yrs. 17 yrs ago folk would have openly called OP a loon & laughed merrily at her for it; MNHQ wouldn't have even stepped in to say "stop troll hunting."

Bottleof · 10/11/2019 15:48

Agree Finewords and if you'd been here for 15 years (ahem - they used that word all the time didn't they...) you would know the best way to construct a question and not get shredded en route.

Bottleof · 10/11/2019 15:49

and gavel 🤦 thank God we've moved on

changenameforthis123 · 10/11/2019 15:52

Oh FFS. I have a right to not agree OP is a stalker. If you want to think that, then report the thread to thwart OP's efforts.

AutumnCrow · 10/11/2019 15:57

The only thing I've learned from this thread is that my phone autocorrects Timmy Mallet to Tommy Mallet.

And apparently he's not the odd thing that OP saw at her friend's house.

changenameforthis123 · 10/11/2019 15:58

Glad you heard from your friend, OP.

And my reply above was in response to someone from a few pages back.

99GreenBalloons · 10/11/2019 15:59

OP fwiw I have been here for donkeys also. Think pom bears, naice ham etc. You would have got the same reaction then. Many pp did rtft. It is your odd reaction of "has she gone on a date, gone out" your over analysing, your intensity.

I had a "friend" like you who turned out to be obsessed with me in a very unhealthy way. It was scary shit!

As you were

JustDanceAddict · 10/11/2019 16:07

Whatever the technical answer I would not do a 5 hour round trip to pick up a friend from an airport. I wouldn’t even expect dh to do it for me ( (I’d get a train). It would be longer than where we live to Gatwick and back ffs!!

Andysbestadventure · 10/11/2019 16:14

If it connects to wifi calling it will have a UK ringtone as far as I know. But I don't always know much 🤷‍♀️

Wintersleep · 10/11/2019 18:01

I rang my GPs in Lanzarote forgetting they were there, halfway through the call GM said "won't this cost you a lot?" and the penny dropped. I hadn't noticed because the ring had been a normal UK one

TheoriginalLEM · 10/11/2019 18:05

So what happened? I got to page 7 and lost the will ...

Jack80 · 10/11/2019 18:09

I hope your friend is ok and she gets in touch

J O K E btw. Lighten the mood!

SavageBeauty73 · 10/11/2019 18:48

I often ring my boss who constantly travels and get a UK ring tone when he's abroad 🤷‍♀️

Isohungy · 10/11/2019 18:55

You sound incredibly intense. Maybe she just wants a night off from your calls and texts?

Actually, why are you calling her on holiday at all? I send whatsapps when away but I'd certainly not expect someone to call me when I'm on holiday!

Isohungy · 10/11/2019 18:56

Ah thanks mumsnet- hid 13 pages of fecking replies and only showed them after I hit post.

Suspect there's a hell of a lot of drip feeding thats occured for 13 pages over this- someone bring me up to speed?

I hope she doesn't have a pet rabbit...

SchrodingersBox · 10/11/2019 19:25

Parts of Cyprus are UK Sovereign territory so it could be that they get treated at UK by mobile networks

Jannco · 10/11/2019 19:34

Courtney555 why do you get a lawyer or someone with an English degree to write your post for you next time, ffs what's wrong with people on here?whatever way she has written it is her way???I understood,I dont think she is a stalker or weird?None of you know the relationship?all she did was ask about a ringtone?the abuse and mocking that girl has got on here is a disgrace, you know nothing about her,but have totally ridiculed her, disgusting behaviour.

Nearly47 · 10/11/2019 20:14

If she's been in the UK for a while she won't be at the airport I imagine. Try to not play the investigator. You sound angry. If mistrust this person so don't make yourself available for pickups, house sitting, etc.

CAG12 · 10/11/2019 20:29

Im in the army. In my experience you dont get a British dial tone there just because you're a military base.

If that were true, itd involve the British Military setting up their own network and civilians that were near by just being able to use it, which wouldnt happen
