Koala Bear confusion...

6060rachel · 09/11/2019 19:55

About 10 years ago, I was in conversation with a friend and mentioned that I love koala bears. Ever since then, my friend has bought me polar bear gifts for Christmas, Birthdays and gifts from holidays. I have polar bear jewellery, tea towels, mugs, ornaments and soft toys.
After 10 years, do I tell her that it's actually koala bears that I like.. not polar bears? Would this offend her? I just want the gifts to stop...I don't even want koala gifts!!

@Deux exactly the same can be said of humans.

OP, hide it all away and hope she takes notice that it’s unwanted guff now.

HUZZAH212 · 09/11/2019 21:48

Aww it's nice she goes to the effort though. I'd imagine polar bear themed holiday gifts can be hard to source in Spain or Greece 😁

6060rachel · 09/11/2019 21:56

You are so right. She found me a polar bear mug in Barcelona.

Just tell her your polar bear collection is complete.

HUZZAH212 · 09/11/2019 21:59

I allowed a neighbour to call me by a totally different name for 8yrs. The opportunity to correct him had passed by. Unfortunately someone else then told him my actual name and he was stunned that I'd not said anything. Once you hit a certain point it just seems easier to go along with it all 😳

i once made the mistake of buying my self a stafforshire china dog ornament (of the dog i had at the time) 2 years later and i had over 100 bloody dog items due to everyone buying me dog related presents, so one day after spending two hours polishing the dammed ornaments i put the whole lot in a box and took it to the nearest charity shop, then someone bought me a dolphin one OMG 40 dolphin ornaments later and off they went to the charity shop, am now in the middle of sorting through my cat ornaments as we have moved to a smaller house and no room for all of them one box at a time charity shop

Kuringai Chase Jozen we are OK. I have a shitload of insurance and my plan has and always will be to "Go".

Jozen · 09/11/2019 23:09

@IAmNotAWitch I'm Port Stephens, surrounded by bushland too. Just getting the smoky smell from up north and the hazy atmosphere this morning.
Those poor buggers, just devastating.

lborgia · 09/11/2019 23:21

Sorry to go off track further, OP, but glad you're safe oz people - we've just been making our plan because of random close bushfire, but SIL is sitting in her house watching the smoke/ fire get closer because they've no way out on a road. If it gets closer they'll be sitting on the beach for a day or so, and going back to good knows what.

As you were, donation to koala sanctuary in your name every year would do the trick, brilliant idea. Try these guys

RightOnTheEdge · 09/11/2019 23:36

This made me actually LOL. Ten years of Polar Bears! 😂

6060rachel · 10/11/2019 00:05

The koala sanctuary idea is great. Reading the posts from all you people in Oz puts my polar bear problem into perspective! Stay safe.
I will ask her to make a donation and take it from there..May have to have a drink first though. This has given me a good laugh. Thanks all for your suggestions/comments!

They aren't as fucking evil as dolphins. Nothing is!

ErrolTheDragon · 10/11/2019 00:13

Or if you think she'll be hurt by her polar/koala mistake, you could ask her to 'adopt' a polar bear for you - they're in trouble too, of course.

[https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw-bushfires-koala-population-like-in-a-cremation-after-blazes-20191110-p5396f.html] They are going to need all the help they can get.

justilou1 · 10/11/2019 07:54

Omg... you really are unreasonable calling them koala bears. You sound like an American. They are definitely not bears. Then you say you like their noises. Do you also like the sound of pigs being slaughtered, because it’s pretty similar?!?! They do have adorable faces, but they are bitey, territorial buggers.

Zoidbergonthehalfshell · 10/11/2019 07:57

@IAmNotAWitch you write with an Australian accent, did you know that? I love the phrase, "stinky grumpy little pricks". Lyrical, absolutely lyrical. Grin

JigsawsAreInPieces · 10/11/2019 07:58

@justilou1 pp actually said I love their noses not noises.
Smile

Lotus90 · 10/11/2019 08:09

😂😂😂😂😂

MillieMoodle · 10/11/2019 08:15

I've always thought koalas are cute but am disappointed to find out from the Australia-based MNrs that koalas are arseholes Sad

Pardonwhat · 10/11/2019 08:41

GrinGrin

Pardonwhat · 10/11/2019 08:42

Also, why are dolphins evil? Sad

Wildorchidz · 10/11/2019 08:50

You sound like an American.

Wtf?

justilou1 · 10/11/2019 08:59

I take it back about their noises then... their noses are cute!!!
Americans call them koala bears and think that they are bears.

6060rachel · 10/11/2019 09:08

@justilou1 I've liked them since childhood cos of something personal to me.
I said I liked their noses, not noises.
I don't like the sound of pigs being slaughtered because I love animals.
I don't understand why you would say "You sound like an American" other than to annoy a lot of Americans.
I apologised earlier on for calling them bears.
WTF has any of this got to do with my original 'lighthearted' point?
