Is the going home outfit really such a fuss?

What's everyone's thoughts on this?

I'm due next month and I'm on Facebook groups with others due.

I feel like there's so much pressure around a 'going home' outfit with everyone sharing their pictures of the outfit they have ready for coming home.

I'm generally just curious - did you make a big deal of a going home outfit? Or did it not matter too much?

I did buy a nice outfit for going home, unfortunately baby turned out to be 9lb 11 oz and far too big for it, he ended up going home in a romper suit and a woolly hat!

ilovetvandchocolates · 09/11/2019 17:26

I went home in my pyjamas, trust me, you won't give a shit!

spice3 · 09/11/2019 17:27

@ilovetvandchocolates I should've specified for the babyGrin

I think OP meant the baby outfit

I didn't bother, all of mine wore sleepsuits

Celebelly · 09/11/2019 17:27

Nope, we ended up being in longer than planned and finally discharged at 11pm so she was just in a sleepsuit and hat! Outfits on tiny babies are a pain in the arse anyway, especially when it's your first and you're terrified of breaking them when dressing them.

PigeonofDoom · 09/11/2019 17:27

Mine puked colostrum over everything I put her in so it would have been a wasted effort!

StrawberryGoo · 09/11/2019 17:27

I was more interested in the first babygro she wore than the going home outfit, but I definitely spent time choosing nice things for the hospital bag.

Totally optional though - if you don’t think you’ll be too fussed you probably won’t be!

Saved you some bother lol. Very recent thread you might like to see how it turned out last time.

MockneyReject · 09/11/2019 17:29

I didn't even know this was a thing!
I suppose the expectation is that there will be photos/social media involved. Seems like everything has to be an occasion, a photo opportunity. As if finally bringing home the baby isn't enough of a big deal.
I'm old, though, so what do I know?

emilybrontescorsett · 09/11/2019 17:31

I thought you meant the new mother had a special 'going home' outfit!

The only thing I remember is bringing dd home in the same bonnet and cardigan which my mother brought me home in.

SweetAsSpice · 09/11/2019 17:32

Na. You’ll be so obsessed with whether they are still breathing in the car seat/pram/sling you honestly won’t care too much about what they’re wearing Wink and as PP have said, newborns have a lot of extra special gunk. It goes everywhere. Enjoy Grin

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 09/11/2019 17:33

Same as a PP.
DS was 10lb 11oz and skipped all the cute 0-3m stuff that I’d bought. Before he arrived I’d often hold one up and tried to imagine him in it 😆

AuntieMarys · 09/11/2019 17:33

White sleepsuit.
No photos.

theendoftheendoftheend · 09/11/2019 17:33

My family had a bit of a thing about 'going home outfits', but they're so scrunched up in it looked a bit silly and in the end I preferred a tiny white babygro. It's personal preference isn't it.
DSis did dress hers only in white for the first 6 weeks. She was happy and the baby was cosy so no skin off anyone else's nose.

Bluewavescrashing · 09/11/2019 17:33

We just had lots of soft comfy sleep suits in the hospital bag plus vests and a snowsuit as it was December. Baby was dressed, fed and reasonably clean when we left hospital 👌 I have no idea which sleepsuit she was wearing but I kept one as a keepsake as it was tiny. They were all second hand to us anyway.

ilovetvandchocolates · 09/11/2019 17:33

@spice3 🤣🤣 sorry!
Yes likewise I didn't bother with any of my babies. Just had a clean baby grow and cardigan and hat.

spice3 · 09/11/2019 17:34

@MockneyReject I'm not old at all and don't really understand it so don't worry! Grin

NotQuiteUsual · 09/11/2019 17:35

Nope, never bothered. I couldn't be doing with changing baby into a specific outfit just to leave. As soon in as discharge papers are signed I'm out the ward doors. I was more interested in the first outfit, since they'll definitely need something to wear when they come out and there's no worries about poonami's wrecking it before it fulfills it's purpose.

Honestly the idea of going home outfits were too much pressure and just made me anxious.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 09/11/2019 17:35

So glad I had my firstborn before iphones and social media (or indeed digital cameras). Newborns look really cute in white babygros though.

Make sure you remember the car seat, the rest is a bonus

Obligatorync · 09/11/2019 17:36

God no. Who cares?

habipprtyh · 09/11/2019 17:37

It's not a new thing that social media has brought. It's been a thing for some for years. My gran has my going home outfit from the 70's still.

TheTrollFairy · 09/11/2019 17:38

We got one. It was just a romper but a fancier one (it had a disney character on it and not just plain white). Dd ended up being too small for it and we were in longer than planned so we didn’t bother in the end.

I wouldn’t bother with anything other than a romper. As someone else said, they are too much faff and they only end up getting puked on Grin

BakewellGin1 · 09/11/2019 17:39

Not really. DS had a nice sleepsuit, cardigan, hat, blanket. I was more concerned he was warm enough to be honest

Hannah9176 · 09/11/2019 17:39

My family were really big on this and I never understood it, my gran bought a ridiculously expensive harrods plain white babygrow for DD to come home in (for £50 Shock). However, DD was tiny and would have been swamped in it so we just used a cheap babygrow to go home in. Lucky we did as there was poo everywhere when we got home (FTM who couldn't fasten a nappy correctly it seems!) and babygrow ended up in the bin 😂

FunOnTheBeach20 · 09/11/2019 17:39

I didn’t bother with a fancy outfit and didn’t feel at all pressured to do so.
