To think school shouldn’t insist that everyone wears a poppy and donates £1

It’s supposedly in a deprived area too - there are constant reminders of the high percentage of pupils with PP.

Also, I don’t think a school should insist everyone wears a poppy - or AIBU?

“ i dont want to read this thread”

Fair enough- but you do want people to explain their reasons -again!

capsule · 09/11/2019 09:24

I don't believe a school would force everyone to donate.

EleanorReally · 09/11/2019 09:25

good point @BertrandRussell

EleanorReally · 09/11/2019 09:26

however the actual soldiers do not lead, they follow orders, and i feel they should be remembered for their sacrifice

Mummyshark2018 · 09/11/2019 09:28

@shayisgreat
Exactly my reasons. Have never worn one, will never wear one and I wouldn't let my child wear one.

whyamidoingthis · 09/11/2019 09:28

The British Army you mean?

No. They are sold by the RBL, who support those in the British army who murdered innocent civilians in Northern Ireland.

saraclara · 09/11/2019 09:29

@EleanorReally do you think it's impossible to remember without wearing a poppy?

PurpleDaisies · 09/11/2019 09:29

And if you’d bothered to read the thread, you’d see it’s perfectly possible to remember without buying a poppy.

I don’t wear one because of the way it has now become compulsory.

There is an idiot landlord of pub near who won’t serve people not wearing poppies. I’m really tempted to go and test this out.

BertrandRussell · 09/11/2019 09:30

The RBL also accepts donations from BAe.

Singlenotsingle · 09/11/2019 09:30

YABU. Those men sacrificed their lives for us. It's good for children to learn about these things. We never want it to happen again. And £1 isn't a lot. What can you buy with £1?

BertrandRussell · 09/11/2019 09:31

“What can you buy with £1?

Dinner.

PurpleDaisies · 09/11/2019 09:31

Yes. What does forcing people to wear poppies have to do with this?

What can you buy with £1?

You can donate it to a charity of your own choice. Let’s face it, with this mass poppy buying every year, the RBL can’t exactly be short of money.

smemorata · 09/11/2019 09:33

Me too. It's really quite horrifying and totally against the poppy ethos to see people being bullied into it. I expect a lot of the people doing this are quite young as poppy wearing never used to be like this. I also think there is probably a big overlap between people who bully others into wearing poppies and people who equate Brexit with patriotism!

EleanorReally · 09/11/2019 09:33

I work with the elderly and will wear one out of respect to them, those that actually lived through ww2 and hated the whole thing.

SoftMyrtle · 09/11/2019 09:33

[Under breath: vacillate, glamorise.] Sorry, as you were... Blush

whyamidoingthis · 09/11/2019 09:33

@EleanorReally - however the actual soldiers do not lead, they follow orders, and i feel they should be remembered for their sacrifice

The solders who murdered the civilians in bloody Sunday, for example, murdered them under their own violation. Even if they were "just following orders" that was not an excuse during the war crime trials post ww2 so why should it be an excuse in Northern Ireland?

5zeds · 09/11/2019 09:33

How is learning about war dependent on buying a poppy?

PurpleDaisies · 09/11/2019 09:35

I work with the elderly and will wear one out of respect to them, those that actually lived through ww2 and hated the whole thing.

Congratulations. That’s your choice. People are not against others wearing a poppy. It’s the pressure for everyone to conform otherwise you’re a BAD PERSON that’s the problem.

smemorata · 09/11/2019 09:35

And yes. I do have relatives and in-laws who fought in the war - on both sides. Grin What they have in common is a hatred of war and a belief in freedom - in fact they don't appreciate any of this faux patriotism at all.

saraclara · 09/11/2019 09:35

And maybe the head teacher should be sent this quote from the above link

A spokesperson for the Royal British Legion says the poppy "honours all those who have sacrificed their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy today, and so the decision to wear it must be a matter of personal choice. If the poppy became compulsory it would lose its meaning and significance. We are thankful for every poppy worn, but we never insist upon it, to do so would be contrary to the spirit of Remembrance and all that the poppy stands for."

5zeds · 09/11/2019 09:37

I wonder how those who’s friends and relatives who were killed by British soldiers feel when they see your Poppy.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 09/11/2019 09:38

The Poppy remembers all the fallen in all wars

Nope. It remembers British and Commonwealth soldiers.

We remember the sacrifice of the Armed Forces community from Britain and the Commonwealth

www.britishlegion.org.uk/get-involved/remembrance/about-remembrance

Very good explanation of this and other issues with the red poppy here: www.ppu.org.uk/remembrance-white-poppies

crashcourseinbrainsurgery · 09/11/2019 09:39

Singlenotsingle,

"YABU. Those men sacrificed their lives for us. It's good for children to learn about these things. We never want it to happen again. And £1 isn't a lot. What can you buy with £1?"

Kind a tricky subject for me, since I am from the country which has been atomic bombed during ww2, and has English dh. So while I sent money with my child to buy Poppy, wanted him to learn about the war later, so he can understand the things better.

theDudesmummy · 09/11/2019 09:39

I would refuse. We do not wear the poppy, I would not judge other people on their decision in this regard but this is ours. and we would stick to it
