To ask what your baby is wearing today?

DC is 4,5 months and my first. I got called out today at nursery because DC was not dressed warm enough to go outside (they were quite unpleasant about it, so I felt awful). DC was wearing a long-sleeved bodysuit, a long-sleeved t-shirt, joggers and socks. Outerwear consisted of a lined wool cardigan with a hood and a blanket I knitted.

I'm usually warm and haven't taken out my winter coat yet this year, so I suppose I cannot trust my own judgement. So tell me, is what DC wore unreasonable in this weather (it was about 7 degrees, dry and sunny here today)?

I tend to worry he overheats, because he's never really sitting still: always (inexpertly) reaching for things with his arms, trying to roll over etc. He stops only when he is sleeping.

My baby was in a sleeveless vest. T-shirt, hoodie and a pram suit as it was freezing here today. She had a blanket and the pram cover too. I do worry i dont layer up enough most days though. Shes 12 months.

NoParticularPattern · 08/11/2019 21:37

Mine is 3.5 months and is wearing his uniform of vest and sleepsuit in the house, add a cardigan and hat if out (in carrier, he’d have a blanket if in the pram). It’s currently 17°C in our bedroom (bloody freezing!!) and he’s in his uniform plus a 2.5tog sleeping bag. I think he seems a little chilly but it won’t be long before he wakes for a feed anyway and then he will be in bed with me so I’ll warm him up plenty. Might take his bag off if he seems super toasty.

moobar · 08/11/2019 21:44

@LailaDay I had the same today and felt awful.

She was in long sleeve vest, tights, play suit. Cardigan hat and gloves.

I have asked about coats, was told no, they wear snow suits. Key worker asked me to bring coat next week as she was cold. I said I was told not to. She can't wear it in car so has cardigan. She said she had got nursery snow suit wet so needed her own coat and they couldn't go out as she didn't have one. I felt terrible!! Have repackaged nursery bag with multiple options tonight.

trotesio · 08/11/2019 21:49

I'm in the SE and it was cold today.

I would expect a baby to be wearing a coat or snowsuit and definitely a hat.

What did you wear? A baby needs one more layer than you.

Wherecanwegetoff123 · 08/11/2019 21:56

6 months old. Long sleeve vest. Then a all in one vest and pram suit tucked into pram muff with a hood. Was very cold here though

GoingBackTo505 · 08/11/2019 22:06

My 8 month old had on a short sleeved vest, long sleeved T-shirt and bottoms that are fleecy on the inside and socks. We went on a walk to my mums for about 25 mins and I put a really chunky knit cardi over that and a thinner rain type mac with a blanket and cosytoes and hat whilst in the pushchair and he was really cosy when we got there. I do need to think about getting him a coat though. He's got either cosy fleece type jackets, the rain mac or a massive snowsuit, nothing in between.

carly2803 · 08/11/2019 22:07

9 months - vest/t-shirt/pants/jumper/bodywarmer/hat/socks/massive blanket.

tough cookie here. at night just vest/pants and grobag, room is 20 and just right!

Celebelly · 08/11/2019 22:13

Hmm, usually in weather like today she'd have a vest, sweater or long-sleeved top over the top and then a fleece-lined jacket over, and a hat. I hate those puffy pram suits, they're a pain in the arse. We do have a couple of thinner fleece-lined puddle suits though. If we're just popping to the shop I stick her in a Tuppence and Crumble wrap. I'm not really a fretter about stuff like this - I'd rather she was too cool than too hot anyway. Too hot is not good.

Celebelly · 08/11/2019 22:15

Also her room is 19 degrees now and she's just in a 2.5 tog sleeping bag with a sleepsuit, no vest or anything else. She'd be boiling with multiple layers on under or blankets on top! So they are all different, just like us. I run really hot and DP is the opposite, so he cries when I have the window open when it's 1 degree outside (like I did last night Grin )

Wheresmrlion · 08/11/2019 22:17

Long sleeved vest, thick leggings, long sleeved t shirt, cardigan with hood, balaclava hat and booties here. Tucked in a cosy toes thingy. Around 8 degrees and 9 months old.

Natsku · 08/11/2019 22:17

I would dress in a pramsuit at least at that temp. I don't really understand the concept of just a single layer on the bottom (trousers) and then multiple layers on top (shirt, jumper, coat), they just get overheated in the chest/arms while chilled in the legs. Once it gets to around 10 degrees or so I use overalls like pramsuits and snowsuits (for colder weather)

Oysterbabe · 08/11/2019 22:20

My 1 year old was in a long sleeve vest, warm wooly jumper and thick winter coat. He wouldn't keep his hat or gloves on. My 3 year old was in a vest, long sleeve top, hoodie and jacket as well as a hat and mittens. She complained that she was cold constantly.

loudnoises1 · 08/11/2019 22:21

My 6 month old had on today short sleeved bodysuit, sleepsuit, puffer jacket

Userzzzzz · 08/11/2019 22:21

For a park trip (so assuming at least an hour) id have my 7m old in a snowsuit and she has had a hat on for the last few weeks when outside for longer periods. For quick transfers in and out of the car, I’d have an outfit plus blanket and maybe a thick cardigan. What buggies do they have? I’m guessing they probably don’t have swishy ones with cozy toes.

MindatWork · 08/11/2019 22:35

1 year old DD was in long sleeved top, thick lined jumper with hood, jeans, socks/shoes, furry lined hat with ear flaps that ties under chin and 2 thick blankets in the pram earlier (we forgot the footmuff 🙄). We drove to the park so not going to fanny around with a snowsuit.

She runs hot too like @Celebelly’s little one, so is currently just in sleepsuit and 2.5 tog sleeping bag in her room and temp is 21 degrees. I’ll prob start adding a vest as well this week as the temp drops.

cravingmilkshake · 08/11/2019 22:36

My baby who is 3.5 months had a best, body suit on today. Had a hat and blanket to walk to the car ( on street parking). Hat comes off in car.

Back home- house is 21° usually ends up in just her vest (very happy baby).

Bed time.... still in the 1.0 tog gro bag and long sleeve vest only (bare legged). The gro egg says our room is 23°.

I think each baby is different as long as you check the chest, how it feels baby and you will be fine!

Apolloanddaphne · 08/11/2019 22:42

My 'baby' is 21. Today she was wearing a polo shirt for the bar she works in. They grow up so fast!

DamnitCharlie · 08/11/2019 22:49

What are they are they actually doing with a 4.5 month old at the park? Do they get out of the pushchair? That outfit would be fine with a blanket or cosy toes but if out of the buggy then a bit cold on the lower half? Just bung a pram suit in your baby's bag. It's a bit much they called you out, our nursery has spare clothes the babies can wear if needed. Sounds like a bit of a drama. It's been a bit colder than usual today so people have probably been caught out.

rainylake · 08/11/2019 23:09

My 9 month old:
Long sleeved vest
Dungarees
Thick hooded woollen cardigan
Socks
A blanket for the buggy to go over her legs.

So about the same as yours. Admittedly we weren't out for a long time today and we were in various warm indoor places.

I had a coat with me but she was warm enough without it. She runs hot and her head gets all sweaty if I overdress her. At bedtime she is in a sleep suit and a 1 tog sleeping bag, and she is still on the warm side in that.

FlutteringFeathers · 09/11/2019 00:20

Ha! Mine is 4.5 months and dressed basically exactly the same, long sleeved body suit, long sleeved tshirt, leggings, socks, lined knitted cardigan with hood and a blanket around her when carrying her outside/on our walk. I wouldn’t just sit outside with her in cold weather anyway though, as no matter what she’s dressed in she would get cold eventually, she’s not at the moving around stage. I’d say we were 3 or 4 degrees C today and we went for a short walk, but otherwise her outside trips were just house to car, car to school for pick up of older child.

satanstoenailsandwich · 09/11/2019 00:36

2 year old was in a vest, long sleeve top, trousers, coat and hat. He had gloves in his bag but don't know if he wore them. Nursery will always insist on a coat (or equivalent for babies, pram suit etc) and hat in winter - it's easier just to send them.

satanstoenailsandwich · 09/11/2019 00:40

'don't really understand the concept of just a single layer on the bottom (trousers) and then multiple layers on top (shirt, jumper, coat), they just get overheated in the chest/arms while chilled in the legs.'

Keeps the core warm. Core heat is what's important.

We live in a mild country though, I think new parents are encouraged to worry far too much about babies temperature.

biboat · 09/11/2019 01:02

2 month old dc4 had - long sleeved bodysuit, jumper and joggers and thick socks with a coat, hat, mittens and cosy toes over the top.
18 month old dc3 had similar but with cord dungarees, a long sleeved top and a cardigan instead of joggers and jumper.

I also had blankets for under their cosy toes with me but we didn't need them today.

We had highs of 4c here today not accounting for wind chill.

angelikacpickles · 09/11/2019 01:12

I think most children will have been wearing a winter coat today. Just send a coat instead of a cardigan.
