To name your child after a celebrity?

Currently going through the process of deciding / agreeing on a name for our baby and came across a problem i cant find any threads on, which is naming your child after a celebrity.

Or should i say unintentionally naming your child after a celebrity...

For example my surname is Smith and one of the only names i actually like for a boy is Jayden. Which although spelt different, is the name of Will Smiths son Jaden Smith. (Who happens to be a bit of a nob, which makes me even less inclined to use it)

I was thinking i could use it as a middle name but would still have the problem if you ever read out his name in full!

So wanted to know if anyone else come across this scenario when thinking up names and if so, did it influence your decision?

I may be wrong, but im not sure Jaden Smith that well known??

If you like it, go for it.

Id be saying something different if you wanted to name your kid North

Jayden is probably a popular enough name to get away with this, without having people instantly make the connection.

Winterdaysarehere · 07/11/2019 21:27

My dc has a first name that is a famous surname.
The odd person mentions it but not enough to bother me at all.

HungryForApples · 07/11/2019 21:32

I know someone called John Wayne Lewis - AFAIK it hasn't caused him any issues!

TheDarkPassenger · 07/11/2019 21:39

When we had our son friends of ours called their kids after a famous person, they moaned about being asked all the time and people making comments.

8 years later the famous person is a nothingness and they still have the name they chose for their kid and no one ever mentions it or I doubt even thinks about it!

TheDarkPassenger · 07/11/2019 21:41

Oh I did go to school with someone with a very very famous persons name but it was cool as fuck.

My exes dad had a famous peados name but I don’t even think anyone’s bothered about that anymore

I have a son with the same name as a famous (but not so famous he’s known by everyone). I get the odd comment that he has the same name but not very often and not in a negative way. I probably wouldn’t if he was massively famous ie, Michael Jackson or similar but no regrets with my sons name

There's a Dawn French where I work, and I met a Venus Williams at the benefits place years ago when I was signing on.

Stilllivinginazoo · 07/11/2019 21:49

I named my daughter just after big brother finished and the winner had same first name few younger people we knew asked if I'd named her after her.erm....no.these days she's disappeared back into the unknown and we are the original I had intended her to be,not a "famous" shadow.name your child as you see fit

WhiteLaundry · 07/11/2019 21:49

I once met a girl called "Destiny Childs" - hilarious!

Stilllivinginazoo · 07/11/2019 21:50

Ps I only discovered this after I'd named my child, but I doubt it would be influenced the choice is made

ANiceLuxury · 07/11/2019 21:52

I knew an old man called Fred West and looked like Paul O’Grady!

Fluffyhairforever · 07/11/2019 21:55

I have a celebrity name. The whole name. People comment. It doesn’t matter - name your child whatever you want.

Luftschloss · 07/11/2019 21:58

I know, from entirely different parts of my life, a James Dean, a Michael Jackson, and a Harry Potter — I can’t begin to say how bored they all are of the ‘jokes’, and I can’t believe how many people default to making exactly the same remarks when they hear the name, as though no one will ever have said it before.

drankthekoolaid · 07/11/2019 22:00

I'd be more concerned that calling the child Jayden will get him labelled as a trouble maker.

InsertFunnyUsername · 07/11/2019 22:05

I dont see the issue. Go for it Smile

HalfBloodPrincess · 07/11/2019 22:08

I think it all depends on the celeb. My SILs sister has a son called Louis Walsh which is hardly commented on, whereas little Donald Trump would be whispered about I'm sure

Thripp · 07/11/2019 22:08

^^ This, in spades.

Give your son a proper name, even if it's one used by a so-called celebrity (I'd never heard of Will Smith or Jaden Smith, btw).

I went to university with a James Bond. He arrived as a fresher to find he had been allocated room 007 in the halls of residence Grin

GleamInYourEyes · 07/11/2019 22:27

Jayden and Smith are common enough names that I don't think it will be an issue. However Jayden is this decades version of Darren so I think it will really date.

TheJoxter · 07/11/2019 22:37

As a teenager I met a Jack Sparrow, he was a few years older than the first PotC film so not named after the character

Chickychoccyegg · 07/11/2019 22:38

I actually know an adult Jayden Smith who's a teacher at a high school, his pupils love taking the mick about his name, and there's a few Jaydens in my dds school, its not in anyway unusual these days so doubt anyone will make the connection.

riotlady · 07/11/2019 22:53

We really love the name Rowan but unfortunately our last name is too close to Atkinson so we didn’t use it :(

riotlady · 07/11/2019 22:54

I used to work for a Michael Jackson actually, he went by Mike xD

Excitedforxmas · 07/11/2019 22:56

My dad worked with a Ronald McDonald!
