I'm having heart palpitations I think?

Igobacktoblack · 06/11/2019 20:11

Well I'm not sure what it is, but every few seconds my heart sort of jumps (if you've ever heard the expression 'my heart was in my mouth', it's a bit like that.

I'm not sure what if anything to do about it?

Thanks Alice for that input. Very helpful.

Ring 111? Hope you’re ok! I have no experience I’m afraid.

PandaandCat · 06/11/2019 20:16

I would give 111 a call. I've had this and wasn't anything serious but best to check.

TheoriginalLEM · 06/11/2019 20:16

Reading idiotic replies will be distracting I guess.

Lots of folk experience this, the vast majority is nothing to worry about. So in your shoes isnot worry, try not to think about it . If it continues make an appointment with your gp

ErrolTheDragon · 06/11/2019 20:16

Sounds like you're getting ectopic beats.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/heart-palpitations/

Have a read of that. It may be nothing, but it could be something.

Elieza · 06/11/2019 20:17

Sounds like heart palpitations right enough. I got told to ring the nhs If it went on for more than four hours continuously. I had it for three hours and a bit and then it just stopped and I was fine. It was related to phlegm surprisingly in my case.

Igobacktoblack · 06/11/2019 20:40

Thanks, sounds like something and nothing. Will wait a few hours and see if continues for hours. Thank you for replying.

Cardiac nurse here. Really common, i actually get them myself. If it's continuous for more than a few hours, or you're feeling really unwell with it, best to get checked out incase it's AF or another heart rhythm that may need treating.
Sounds like it's nothing to worry about though!

ErrolTheDragon · 06/11/2019 21:00

DH has AF from time to time (occasional bouts of fibrillation and a few months of continuous flutter once ). One of the characteristics he finds is that he can walk on the flat but there's just no way of making greater effort (because the heart rate can't adjust to pump more) and so something like going upstairs will make him breathless. If it's just ectopics then the heart is beating normally between and can adjust iyswim.

Igobacktoblack · 06/11/2019 21:33

Thank you. It sounds like it's common and just something to be endured I suppose. It's not causing me pain, it's just a little disconcerting having your heart jump up your throat every few seconds. I'm sure I'll sleep through it later. That's the main thing. I'm really tired so could do with a good night's sleep.

Go to gp and get blood tests. I’ve had the same and I’ve just found out I have an overactive thyroid apparently palpitations can be a symptom of that.

annie987 · 06/11/2019 21:39

Having a really good cough usually settles this for me. Mine are worse when my folate is low - might be worth getting some blood tests done. Hope you manage to sleep through it. It’s horrid!

whatisheupto · 06/11/2019 21:42

I get them if I'm dehydrated... apparently quite a common cause. Also if low on potassium.... eat some mushrooms and bananas!

Elieza · 06/11/2019 21:45

Annie987 that’s the same with me, a good cough brings the phlegm up.

OP I also find a hot drink like soup or a hot meal makes me cough up crap too and it feels good psychologically to get it out. Stay off dairy for a bit and see if that helps. There’s a link between dairy and phlegm. I’ve been off cheese and butter and I’ve been a lot better.

Igobacktoblack · 06/11/2019 23:57

Just to clarify, it's not phlegm in my lungs. It's my heart jumping.

How long had this been going on? Have you been drinking? Are you stressed?

WagtailRobin · 07/11/2019 00:51

Do you have a history of anxiety? I experience palpitations when I am having an anxiety "episode".

It can be really bloody frightening and in the beginning when it first started happening to me I was convinced every time my heart was going to stop, it wasn't though, it was "just" a physical manifestation of anxiety.

It would do no harm to see your GP, it would put your mind at rest if nothing else.

ilovepixie · 07/11/2019 00:53

Are you menopausal OP? I get them and it's related to the menopause

willowhispers · 07/11/2019 01:21

I used to get them. Like a skipped beat and then a double beat. Really weird feeling when you don't know what's happening. I very rarely get them now.

See your GP when you can just to get checked out.

Igobacktoblack · 07/11/2019 04:46

No, it's not a skipped beat. It's like every fourth beat or so jumps up my throat/out of my chest.

Elisheva · 07/11/2019 05:01

I get this, it’s a really weird feeling. It’s quite common. I saw my gp and had an ecg which was fine, she said it’s just one of those things.

Igobacktoblack · 07/11/2019 05:40

My last ECG was abnormal. Whatever that means.

YABU for posting this on aibu

amylou8 · 07/11/2019 05:59

I get them, usually the first sign that I'm coming down with something. Was all checked out by the doctor years ago and declared nothing to worry about. I've not keeled over yet 😕
