To get the double buggy back out for my 7 and 3 yr olds

No size issue, they are usually petite, and not bothered by the buggy. They probably miss it if anything

My main fitness was walking, long distance and speedy rather than pottering around. It’s so hard with kids, they aren’t bad walkers for their age but can’t really stride fast enough or cover distance in a way that will make a proper dent on my fitness levels.

I’ve still got my double, I live in a hilly area. My husband works long hours and I just don’t have time otherwise. I’m thinking of each afternoon popping them in the buggy for a really brisk hilly 3-4 mile walk. With the double it’s not easy. I do other things, like cycle, but this is a super easy no prep way of actually sticking to something for fitness tat works.

I’m getting flabby, odd? If you saw me regularly would you think it was odd...? We do walk together, but as I said it’s just not going to keep me fit staying at their pace

She can run in bursts, but she falls over a bit often and tired. From her starting points and for her she does well and is always moving forward, but this is way out of her capabilities. She is very slightly built as well, probably like a lot of 4 yr olds in motor skills. But, moving forward for her, she’ll get there. But it’s not a rushed thing

If your kids are happy then why not? Mine would be bored and complaining and trying to climb out all the time but yours might be different.

I totally know how frustrating it is to not be able to get out for a run or a walk. I hardly have any time either. It's not asking much, just half an hour for a run twice a week, but most weeks it's bloody impossible.

MeadowHay · 06/11/2019 15:42

Really struggling to understand to your 'this or nothing else' mentality. I mean, do it if you want. I haven't actually said YABU because tbh I don't care and you know your child better than any of us. They're hardly going to be seriously harmed by being in a buggy for a bit! so I agree some PPs are being very harsh in their replies. But it really isn't your only option.

SmileCheese · 06/11/2019 15:42

It sounds like your daughter might have dyspraxia if I'm honest.

In regards to the treadmill if you put up a listing on freecycle people will be only too happy to give you one. Its one of those things that people use for a short while and then it just acts as somewhere to hang the laundry.

Areyoufree · 06/11/2019 15:45

These threads never go well - apparently most posters have children that could walk miles from 18 months old!

If you're happy, and your kids are happy, then why not?

Kuio · 06/11/2019 15:45

I’ve done HIIT and all that. Doesn’t anyone else get bored? Want to get out? Move more? Have a squashy house? End up having to give up because everyone else is in the way it simply get bored of screens?
I was just looking for something I know I personally can stick to, to get fit again, that’s within my limits. I’d Iove a gym membership or something, or to exercise at home even in privacy at least, but I don’t have it.

I’ve accepted this isn’t going to work, but it’s depressing.

Just do what you want OP, everyone else on Mumsnet has children who walk 10 miles a day in the snow by 18 months so you’re bound to get some negative responses here. Pushing children that age in a double buggy sounds like a great workout.

Sotiredbutcannotsleep · 06/11/2019 15:48

This is why I didn't get a double buggy and just stuck to a single with a buggy board (with a removable seat) as the there are still times you need to get to places quickly (or have a brisk walk for excercise as in this case) once the older child outgrows the buggy.

Kuio · 06/11/2019 15:48

Re the treadmill, we had to move due to something unforeseen. 5 kids. 2 double bedrooms and a box room. Really, unfolding it even isn’t a small challenge.

Yes, re dyspraxia- I’m well aware she has reasonably significant difficulties and she is well known to professionals. I’m not going to be able to stop and explain that to everyone I see though so realistically the question is- on seeing the older child what would your reaction be?

Do you have time when 7yo is at school?

Irisloulou · 06/11/2019 15:49

Charity shops often have those running elliptical machines.
I’d get one of those. You can watch some TV whilst you use it.

Check out the larger furniture shops.

Freecycle or gumtree really it’s the sort of thing people just have cluttering up their houses.

TheOrigFV45 · 06/11/2019 15:51

Aren't all but the 3yo at school? I can't tell from your posts whether you work, but you say "stuck in the house" so I am assuming not.

So, can't you do something when you only have the 3yo in the day?

Obviously I have no insight in to your life, but it does make me feel a bit sad that you don't even have 1/2hr to yourself a day, or just 1hr a few times a week to do something you really want, and is good for you. Does you DH get any leisure time?

Irisloulou · 06/11/2019 15:52

Or you could just run up and down the stairs, it’s a terrific workout.

Kuio · 06/11/2019 15:52

And @Areyoufree

I know maybe I shouldn’t worry so much, but it is a grind when you get looks and comments and lot/ and it seems this would attract them.

I think a lot of people aren’t getting that it can be really really hard to get fit when time and cash poor and with kids always present. There’s been lots of ‘solutions’ that people state work for them, it’s not that I’m rejecting them for fun- I’m saying calmly why they haven’t fitted my circumstances

Witchinaditch · 06/11/2019 15:53

Op who cares if you’ll be judged? The people who judge you don’t matter you don’t know them! I think go for it, if your daughter would enjoy it and you need to get out for your physical health (and a brisk walk is great for mental health too!) just bloody do it! Don’t let strangers on the internet have this much say in your life- just do it!

StrongTea · 06/11/2019 15:54

No one else’s business, if it suits you and your 7 year old just do it.

kmammamalto · 06/11/2019 15:54

Don't be put off by stuff on here!! There's always all this stuff about what kids shouldn't do after a certain age but I think a good bit of fresh afternoon air is a win for everyone! I have just had baby number 2 and one of the best things I'm looking forward to is a nice long walk while 3yo is in nursery!! Do it and enjoy!!!

Kuio · 06/11/2019 15:56

Ok, I’ll say I’ve dropped it now. I can’t repeat myself.

I’m not thick. When I say I don’t have time it doesn’t mean ‘oh actually I have 6 hours free when she’s at school’. It means exactly what I’ve said. I’m not actually just sitting at home with a three yr old. People aren’t believing the facts then making presumptions. I clearly stated there isn’t another time. I’m not sitting around with just the little one in the day because that would be a really obvious time to go. 🤦‍♀️

OP posts:
bibot · 06/11/2019 15:56

Why can't you do it while she's in school?

Kuio · 06/11/2019 15:56

Have a guess @bibot. What’s a common reason....

OP posts:
Userzzzzz · 06/11/2019 15:56

‘can't you do something when you only have the 3yo in the day?’

This would make more sense to me too. I’ve been struggling to fit in exercise with a 3yo and baby so I’ve been putting on music and having a good dance. Not the same as running but enough to raise my heart rate and feel like we’re all doing something fun. World something like that help?

Passthecherrycoke · 06/11/2019 15:57

You sound like you’ve already made you mind up Op so not sure what you’re asking, but what about when they’re all at school?

I can’t imagine a 7 year old in a buggy

Kuio · 06/11/2019 15:57

@Userzzzzz um, yes that fits your life I see. It would fit mine if I was at home all day
