Ok, so maybe the writer of this email has a learning disability, but honestly this annoys me so much. In a school circular email?! It's hard enough to get kids to pay attention to grammar and spelling, and then you see stuff like this from the school, and I just want to throw my hands up and ask why do we even bother.

Just ranting here- I have no intention of following up with school and being "that" parent, although the thought did cross my mind.

This really really annoys me

You’ll soon have posters telling you that in today’s hectic world, the odd slip-up doesn’t matter. But I agree with you.

That said, why are 11th Graders getting feedback on basic things like reading and writing?! I’m assuming you’re in the US form from “math”.

Dljlr · 05/11/2019 21:18

Meh. At DSs old school he came home clutching a mass printed label (nothing to do with him or any other child) with some seeds inside which read 'Hapy Fahters Day'. That really did make me Hmm

questionzzz · 05/11/2019 21:20

Canada.
A slip up doesn't matter- I make my fair share of typos dashing off emails to colleagues- only those that I work closely with, though. And I notice others do too.

But this is a circular from school, to parents, about reading and writing! The irony! Also it's more formal than hasty work notes. Ugh.

@Dljlr wow. That is VERY annoying!

Where I live, teachers regularly use "them" instead of "those " and occasionally, "seen" instead of "saw", so I couldn't get too worked up by your example!Smile

Howlovely · 05/11/2019 21:30

I completely agree with you, OP.
I have a number of teacher friends and an alarming number of them don't know how to use your/you're - one of them teaches English to degree level!

Swisskit · 05/11/2019 21:31

Really really annoys me. There should be a comma between the two "reallys".

It's not just the school getting it wrong.

Gingerninja01 · 05/11/2019 21:32

Not school related, but there is a cafe near me which advertises “bagguettes” in large letters in their window display. Irrationally bugs me.

questionzzz · 05/11/2019 21:35

@Swisskit How fortunate that I am not charged with teaching or working in an institution responsible for teaching reading and writing then :)

Op I completely agree. I've had a report from a Therapist in regards to my daughter. It was blunt and extremely negative based on a test my child did. The targets given were copied and pasted and half way through had another child's name on them.
This is all based on my child's attention skills. Oh the bloody irony.

questionzzz · 05/11/2019 21:39

@Howlovely Having worked with adult learners for a fair bit (not now though), I have noticed it seems as if native English speakers confuse "your/you're", "they're/their/there" more than ESL students.

@marshmallowss how shocking. Isn't that some sort of breach of confidentiality?

My DCs' school once sent a newsletter home with the word 'calendar' spelled incorrectly three times on one page - calender, calander & calandar Hmm

I wanted to circle the mistakes in red pen & send it back in to school, but my DC wouldn't let me Grin

MsJudgemental · 05/11/2019 21:47

@questionzzz

As a private tutor, I‘ve seen this a lot unfortunately!

marshmallowss · 05/11/2019 21:48

@questionzzz yup that was my thoughts! I know her boss. I'm tempted to show her unprofessionalism (and her shit manner with regards to a child) But I'm just being angry and childish right now.

FredericaBimmel · 05/11/2019 21:52

We’ve got a sign that says Liesure Centre up in the reception of my school. It’s laminated, so I can’t get my marker out and fix it.

FamilyOfAliens · 05/11/2019 21:52

yup that was my thoughts!

Should be those were my thoughts.

SunshineAngel · 05/11/2019 21:53

It annoys me too, but this looks like they've just typed the message really, really quickly.

I am a professional proofreader and editor, and the mistakes I see in some pieces of writing are just shocking.

FuckyNel · 05/11/2019 21:54

My dd grammar school uniform policy states ‘discrete’ jewellery can be worn

🤦🏻‍♀️

marshmallowss · 05/11/2019 21:55

@FamilyOfAliens I never pretended I was a professional. I'm just stating the irony of that said professional who specialises in the field, made that mistake.

Bluerussian · 05/11/2019 21:56

Your deliberate mistake is funny, marshmallowss.

FamilyOfAliens · 05/11/2019 21:58

I’m not a professional writer either, but I know the difference between singular and plural.

priceofprogress · 05/11/2019 21:59

YANBU. Shocking lack of either attention to detail or education.

marshmallowss · 05/11/2019 22:03

@FamilyOfAliens I'm sorry, But I don't really understand the point of your comment. It had nothing to do with my reply to the OP. My niggle was to do with professionals and the irony that was created in regards to my child. My writing to the OP had absolutely nothing to do with you. I was agreeing with her and you've jumped in and attempted to belittle me because you know the difference between singular and plural and I don't. 👏🏼

questionzzz · 05/11/2019 22:03

@FamilyOfAliens In your eagerness to cry "gotcha", you're (not your) missing the point.

We all make mistakes and typos when bashing out non-formal emails, texts, and chats on an anonymous forum.

This is an official email from a school, sent to over two hundred parents. That is, from an institution charged with teaching reading and writing, amongst other things. So seeing at least two glaring spelling and grammar mistakes on one simple line is jarring, and ironical. That is what is annoying, not the fact of the fairly minor writing errors.
