Who should give

So you are driving along a single track country road at night in the dark and rain in a vehicle with no rear view mirror, just driven around a bend in the road when you see an oncoming car, the oncoming car drives past a passing place on its side at speed with a clear view of you approaching and then stops in front of you and doesn’t move. When you get out and ask the car to reverse back to the said passing place you are told ‘no, you can reverse back to the last passing place’ which is much further back around the bend. Aibu to think the oncoming car should have to give?

What is there no rear view mirror?

AlwaysCheddar · 05/11/2019 19:31

Sorry, why no rear view mirror? But the other driver sounds like an arse. Not sure why you got out if your car... not seem safe.

TiceCream · 05/11/2019 19:33

The other vehicle is not responsible for your lack of mirror, nor can they be expected to know you don’t have one. If the police catch you driving without one you’ll be in trouble.

However, in this scenario the other car should have reversed, simply because they were closer to a passing place and it was easier for them to reverse.

Suzanne12 · 05/11/2019 19:35

It should be the one who doesn't have to reverse as far back. It's their own fault for driving past the passing place, which is just stupid when they can see you there

Nottobesoldseparately · 05/11/2019 19:36

You don't need a rear view mirror!
What do you think vans do? Or cars with boots fully packed!

The other car should have moved.

Suzanne12 · 05/11/2019 19:36

Rear view mirrors aren't required. Maybe it's a van?

Bellaxx8 · 05/11/2019 19:37

Why don’t you have a mirror

busybarbara · 05/11/2019 19:37

Erm it’s totally legal not to have a rear view mirror and very normal in a van, lorry or other vehicle with restricted rear view. As such you should avoid using one even if you have one, that’s what side mirrors are for.

badgermushrooms · 05/11/2019 19:38

Passing place etiquette says if you can pull into a passing place, you do. If you have to reverse and you don't want to, you have to be really, REALLY sure that your nearest passing place is closer than the other person's, otherwise you are an arsehole.

Ergo, YANBU and the other driver is an arsehole.

(I am assuming you were driving a van or towing a horsebox, not pootling along in a normal car without a rear view mirror in which case you would both be unreasonable (though the other driver would still be an arsehole)).

TiceCream · 05/11/2019 19:39

Oh well if you’re not in a car and are driving a larger and less manoeuvrable vehicle then the car is even more unreasonable not to reverse!

Bluetrews25 · 05/11/2019 20:03

Were you on a tractor?
Sounds like you know the rules.
I can see some car drivers getting arsey with you. Eeejits.

Loveletters123 · 05/11/2019 20:17

Yes I was in a large van (not a matter for the police TiceCream!) and the other driver could clearly see it was more difficult for me than them (they were in a Mini) but obviously didn’t care. Thanks for the responses

The person nearest the passing place on their side of the road should reverse. In your case, the other person should have arsed backwards into the one on their side.

However, reversing appears to be beyond the wit of a lot of folks when it comes to using passing places, even in broad daylight, they're not something they know how to use a lot of the time.

In your situation, I'd have dropped the passenger side mirror down so I could see the verge clearly and reversed slowly, sounding the horn in case there was another vehicle approaching the bend out of my sight behind me. Muttering rude words about the other driver under my breath as I did it.

Strangerthingshere · 05/11/2019 20:21

Other driver 100%. Loads of these roads where I live and they only work if everyone uses their common sense.

I hope you stood your ground, what happened in the end?

Loveletters123 · 05/11/2019 20:26

I ended up reversing very slowly whilst holding drivers door slightly open as the passing place was on my drivers side and very muddy and difficult to get into. Quite dangerous really but felt I had no choice as the other driver refused to budge. I drive for a living and it frustrates me there seems to be more and more inconsiderate drivers around these days. Rant over!

Put your feet up in the dash and settle in. The Mini was an arse.

Travis1 · 05/11/2019 20:30

I’d honestly have turned my engine off and waited. I have done this before when encountering an arsehole not obeying the Highway Code in relation to right of way 🙈 they caught me on a very bad day 🤷🏻‍♀️

WellTidy · 05/11/2019 20:33

Nobody should be reversing around a bend or up a small hill (ie not being able to see who is coming). So in your scenario, the other car should have reversed.

MrOnionsBumperRoller · 05/11/2019 20:36

Hopefully Travis1 and i won't end up in this situation as i'd do (and have done!) the same Grin

Chloemol · 05/11/2019 20:48

You should have held your ground. I got so fed up with people taking the piss on a road when it’s my right of way and they come down past all the parked cars. I got so made last time I sat there, told them it was my right of way, sat there, sat there, took a drink of water, they moved!

TheReluctantCountess · 05/11/2019 20:53

I’ve have sat there and waited for them to move.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 05/11/2019 20:55

If I'd have been you, I would have switched my engine off, put my hazards on and got comfy for the long wait

Loveletters123 · 05/11/2019 20:57

Yes I should have held my ground but it was difficult as I was in my work van which was clearly marked with my company logo and she would probably threatened a complaint if I had refused to move! Thanks for all the positive replies 🙂

OP posts:
PawPawNoodle · 05/11/2019 21:01

You should have let her complain, it would have been a laugh for the office.

TrainspottingWelsh · 05/11/2019 21:02

Yanbu. Although I would have switched off the engine, put on my hazards, and put my feet on the dash.

Unless of course they were tourists with a clean car and you're a local, in which case you're obliged to throw your vehicle over the hedge and apologise for the inconvenience of clogging up the nice country lanes with your mundane daily life.

Also bemused that so many people are confused by the concept of a vehicle without a rear view mirror.
