What would you choose - stomach bug or very nasty cold?

In our house we are onto our 5th drawn out nasty cold complete with fevers, coughs, rubbish sleep since the end of summer. This morning I was thinking well at least it's not a stomach bug (famous last words). However most stomach bugs are done within 48 hours so at least it would be done and out the way. These nasty colds seems to drag on for at least 2 weeks.

Although I hate a stomach bug I'm almost thinking I'd chose it next time over another one of these virus's. Is this ridiculous?

I'd take the cold, but appreciate it is really unpleasant when you have a really bad one Flowers.

I've only ever had one stomach upset in my 64 years, so vomitting and diarrhoea still has novelty value for me! I was also pleasantly surprised by the fact that it stopped as suddenly as it started and there was none of that just feeling shite for days on end but not being ill enough to stay off work.

Better for weight loss than a cold, too.

Stomach bug. I have sinus issues and asthma so colds are hellish, and even the mildest ones usually end up lingering for a couple of weeks.

Also with a stomach bug I feel totally justified stating home and resting til it’s over. With a cold there’s always this pressure to get on with things because it’s ‘just a cold’.

I would rather have a cold. I really hate vomiting

BellatrixLestat · 05/11/2019 12:37

A cold any day.

Although it's long and drawn out the last stomach bug I had was the most horrendous 3 hours of my life (after labour), stuck on the toilet violently vomiting and trying to navigate both ends Blush.

Took 3 days to recover from the loss of water and electrolytes too.

Heavy cold. I hate stomach bugs. I hate how messy they are. I hate how long it takes the kids to recover. I hate the smell. The washing. The trying to get an appetite back. The aches and pains the day after.

At least with a cold you can function a little to care for the kids and dose up.

ReginaPhalangee · 05/11/2019 12:38

Recently I had severe food poisoning... for me there is absolutely nothing worse than being violently sick, retching up bile when there's nothing left, the pain, the nausea and dizziness... lying on the floor of the bathroom, then the joy of both ends at once Halloween Envy
A bad cold is horrible but I'd take it any day over anything related to being sick

AryaStarkWolf · 05/11/2019 12:39

I've had a cold the last week and it's rotten but I would still choose this over a stomach bug, who in their right mind would rather be hanging over a bowl vomiting for 24-48 hours?

Sally99 · 05/11/2019 12:41

My colds last forever so I'd definitely choose a stomach bug - besides you get to lose weight with it.

MepsiPax · 05/11/2019 18:27

Bad cold, definitely. I am a complete wuss about stomach pain and feeling/being sick.

bluetue · 17/11/2019 15:10

Stomach bug I think it's worse. Had the beasties one ever last year, coming out both ends, horrific fever which kept me up all night, desperately thirsty with a pounding headache but can't keep anything down.

At least with a cold you can dose up on night nurse and try to sleep it off, although sleeping with a blocked nose can be a unique torture.

nevergotthehangofthursdays · 17/11/2019 15:24

Cold. I have an absolute, visceral horror of throwing up. There is something about nausea and vomiting that is so utterly miserable that it contaminates your very being - I can entirely understand women with HG who feel suicidal with it. Oh, and stomach bugs aren't necessarily over and done with quickly either; the worst ones can leave you feeling wrung out for weeks with no appetite. I had some sort of bug when I was 12, probably a rotavirus type thing, which made me like this.

Most colds OTOH, though miserable at their worst, are at least amenable to a couple of paracetamol, a fluffy blanket and a plentiful supply of hot drinks.

housemdwaswrong · 17/11/2019 15:38

I don't think I've ever had a stomach bug Hmm a tad loose really, but never copious toilet visits or vomiting. I couldn't think of anything worse :(

I get regular colds, and spend a lot of time, like now, with what feels like a cold but it never actually comes to fruition. Tedious, but a stomach bug must be vile.

carrots555 · 17/11/2019 15:41

Stomach bug for sure. All my colds tend to be heavy and rarely go away any quicker than 10 days/2 weeks.
I don't mind the coughing or sneezing so much, it's the inability to breathe properly.
Hate colds soooo much.

floraloctopus · 17/11/2019 15:42

A cold. Hot toddy, a warm duvet and tuck up on the sofa with a heated pad vs sitting in the bathroom feeling like shit. No contest.
