What would you choose - stomach bug or very nasty cold?

In our house we are onto our 5th drawn out nasty cold complete with fevers, coughs, rubbish sleep since the end of summer. This morning I was thinking well at least it's not a stomach bug (famous last words). However most stomach bugs are done within 48 hours so at least it would be done and out the way. These nasty colds seems to drag on for at least 2 weeks.

Although I hate a stomach bug I'm almost thinking I'd chose it next time over another one of these virus's. Is this ridiculous?

As a one off I would absolutely choose the cold but I'm so fed up of them I'm now in a (very possibly deluded) state of the grass being greener.

I do remember having 3 stomach bugs within space of a year a while back and would have given anything for a swap!

I'm not sure how to quote but I'm so sorry to hear a couple of you are dealing with cancer/chemo Flowers

The cold, stomach related illnesses are the worst

megletthesecond · 05/11/2019 08:27

Cold. At least I can get stuff done from bed.

Cornflakesncake · 05/11/2019 08:28

I had a nasty virus in pregnancy and couldn't take anything apart from paracetamol for it and due to lower immunity had it for weeks on end, it was awful. I'll take a regular cold unpregnant over that anyday. Get well soon op, Flowers

troppibambini · 05/11/2019 08:31

Cold all day. Dd has a stomach bug and it's a violent one so bad I've had to throw away my rug.

SlackerMum1 · 05/11/2019 08:32

I’m going stomach bug. I hate colds whereas at least a stomach bug is unpleasant but swiftly over. Plus absolute cast iron case to stay off work/ in bed/ out of the way of family rather than having to power through! I’m in bed on day 2 of a bug and pretty much back to normal... but rule state that I can’t go back till tomorrow.

CottonSock · 05/11/2019 08:40

We have a whole house of stomach bug. It's horrific. As well as feeling ill I've had no sleep for 4 nights out of 7 and a moutain of washing. Youngest ended up admitted to hospital as she had a severe ear infection too.

Cryalot2 · 05/11/2019 08:53

Given I have bowel condition a bug is a nightmare to me and I often need medical help when I take such, I have to say a cold every time .

EntropyRising · 05/11/2019 08:59

God I hate stomach bugs.

But... I had a cold develop into tonsilitis last year and now I'm terrified of them.

On the fence.

elliejjtiny · 05/11/2019 09:06

Cold. We've just had a stomach bug go through our family and now I'm at the stage where I've got 3 well but contagious children home from school and a mountain of washing that has built up because I was washing puked on stuff all day yesterday.

MrsToothyBitch · 05/11/2019 09:18

Stomach bug. I have sinus problems so colds invariably bring agonising headaches and lurk for weeks. I also find it much harder to rest/ balance life with a cold since people expect you to keep going but I get woolly, drowsy, lose my balance and go a bit peculiar or spacey. Stomach bugs sends me to bed. End of.

I also feel less gross with a stomach bug, they hurt less than a cold, the yuck tends to be expelled and a shower or bath helps loads. Colds for me mean being aware of every cavity on my face & slowly drowning in snot & gunge for ages- including my nose crusting over. The colds I get tend to be much more vicious with things like fever, too.

MrsMonkeyBear · 05/11/2019 09:18

Cold every time. Although both of my kids tend to vomit from coughing

TheFairyCaravan · 05/11/2019 09:23

I'm an emetophobe so I'd choose a million colds over one stomach bug.

Fightingmycorner2019 · 05/11/2019 09:24

Stomach all the way
You feel shit BUT lose weight Grin

IrmaFayLear · 05/11/2019 09:30

Cold 100%.

You can't do anything with a stomach bug. A cold you can watch tv, read a bit, sleep on and off.

If you are being sick and leaping for the loo every five minutes it is miserable , plus stomach bugs have the nasty habit of appearing when you are not safely in your own home within sprinting distance of your own toilet. The absolute horror of being struck down when out and about!

DontLettuceBrexitLettuceRomain · 05/11/2019 09:31

Stomach bug, for the weight loss outcome

Me too BlushBlushBlush

SandAndSeals · 05/11/2019 09:36

Definitely cold. I’ve just had a mild stomach bug that lasted about 18 hours. It meant I didn’t sleep as I spent the whole night near the toilet and DP had to take emergency leave as I couldn’t watch 2 year old DS from the bathroom. Please DS has been sick too and cleaning that up when you already feel terrible Envy (not envy).

With a cold I could have at least bundled us up on the sofa and watching movies with him.

Treaclepie19 · 05/11/2019 09:38

Cold! I have a massive fear of stomach bugs.

Peacenquiet2 · 05/11/2019 09:44

One time id have said cold, until a heavy cold turned into bilateral pneumonia a few years ago and I felt like I was dying, lasted about a month, over December. This was when my youngest was 3 months old and I had no choice but to crack on and look after him and my other 2 young dcs, incidentally he also was admitted to hospital for 2 days with the same illness that caused my pneumonia, was awful.
So now for me, I'd take the stomach bug every time.

GU24Mum · 05/11/2019 09:48

Definitely stomach bug.

My colds last for ages, develop increasingly bad asthma and sometimes make me throw up from the coughing so I'd go for the bug. Plus I'm shallow and the weight loss is useful (though never seems to stay off).

Damntheman · 05/11/2019 09:52

You might lose weight from a stomach bug, but it goes straight back on again the second you're well :D Just call me the killer of joy.

QuietBatperson15 · 05/11/2019 10:11

Incidentally I had those 3 stomach bugs within the year after having my first baby, so lost most of the baby weight! I've got my 2nd baby who is now 5 months and it seems to be bouts of colds this time round. The weight isn't budging of course. Must be prone to a lovely post natal dip in immunity.

I'd prefer the stomach bug. About 3 days and it's done, colds linger on for ages.

BlobbyTheLump · 05/11/2019 12:15

I'd take a really horrific cold over a stomach bug every day of the week.

We all caught Norovirus a few years ago (from a baby weigh-in clinic) and I never, ever want to be that ill again.
I broke my ankle about 6 months after that and would, in terms of discomfort, happily choose the break again over a stomach bug.

OneOfTheGrundys · 05/11/2019 12:22

Cold.
Stomach bugs can make you feel like death. That desperate, emergency, ‘I’m about to shit/vomit all over myself’ feeling is 100% the worst.
