it has appeared several times, imo it's really is a stupid expression. someone 'invents' an expression and the herd mentality follow thinking it's edgy or cool.
possibly bu not really bothered in the long run/

Why is this vulgar, but the "taking the piss" in your most recent post isn't, OP?

Sparklingbrook · 04/11/2019 12:58

'lads' ?

BunnyColvin · 04/11/2019 12:59

'Piss or get off the pot' isn't sexist OP.

Basically, these are old expressions that are coming into vogue again because younger generations aren't familiar with them and latch on to them thinking they're a new and clever invention. All part of the dumbing down of language imo.

'Ducks in a row' - similarly ancient.

BeatriceTheBeast · 04/11/2019 13:00

Not new. Not even new on MN. It is fucking gross though. I hate it.

I once saw a weird troll fantasist someone on here, saying they'd told their pregnant friend to "take your head for a shit". People fell into raptures over this as if it was pure genius. One of the most annoying made up threads I've ever seen on here. But I digress.

Clawdy · 04/11/2019 13:02

It's one of the lines in "Beauty School Dropout" in "Grease" ! Something like "I've called the shot, get off the pot......and go back to high school."

annielouise · 04/11/2019 13:05

I just looked it up as had a feeling a US president had said it years ago and Nixon did say it. Seems it was in a novel from 1942. People must have caught on recently and are using it more.

The one I hate is fuck off to the far side of fuck off and when you're there fuck off a bit more. It's so moronic.

Ponoka7 · 04/11/2019 13:16

@BeatriceTheBeast, take your head for a shit was a popular phrase in Liverpool up until about ten years ago.

There was the nunch money thread with 'chong a dong' on it. Everyone thought that was fantastic.

I often wonder were these, people live and if they get out much.

Butchyrestingface · 04/11/2019 13:17

I like ’bats in the belfry’ but I don’t think it’s coming back in vogue. Sad but Grin

BeatriceTheBeast · 04/11/2019 13:20

@Ponoka7

Much as I love Liverpool, that phrase is fucking vile.

myolivetree · 04/11/2019 13:23

I always clutch my pearls when someone says - shit the bed.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 04/11/2019 13:25

My Dad's been saying "shit or get off the pot" since I was young.

It's not a phrase I use, but it's not something I take offence to, either.

BertrandRussell · 04/11/2019 13:54

My father used to say “kangaroos in the top paddock”....

Screamqueenz · 04/11/2019 14:03

It's an old saying, kind of along the lines of dog in a manger, but much more direct.

I can't see it being used much, because it relates to such a specific situation, i.e. someone is stopping a process moving forward by refusing to act either way.

I prefer piss or get off the pot myself, but only because of the alliteration.

Andylion · 04/11/2019 14:08

I've heard it for at least 30yrs, but it is an american thing.

My Canadian-born and raised grandmother used the piss version, so I very much doubt it's American. I wonder if it is an Irish thing as her mum was born in Ireland.

NoSauce · 04/11/2019 14:13

Nothing is as annoying as CF.

Handbag101 · 04/11/2019 14:36

NoSauce I totally agree. It's like everyone is saying it on here. Trying to hard to be cool I think....

BertrandRussell · 04/11/2019 14:37

“Pearl clutching” is the worst.
“Cat’s bum mouth” is the worse too.

SD1978 · 04/11/2019 14:40

@CokeAndCrispsAndDip - I didn't hear that first hear- but I actually thought it was a flipping brilliant phrase for many different situations- and had probably stopped me labouring a point or position on multiple occasions. For me it pretty much made the point if is this really worth a fight, or juts move on.

dontalltalkatonce · 04/11/2019 14:42

'Head tilt and tinkly laugh' or 'breezy laugh' are far worse, Bertrand.

JacksonPillock · 04/11/2019 14:52

"bun fight"

itllneverfitinthecar · 04/11/2019 14:52

Just a few weeks ago it was "walking on eggshells" almost every other post contained this phrase whether it was appropriate or not.

Same with thread headings. If someone posts something just slightly off from the usual MIL/CF/School/Nasty Friend/Christmas dilemma, there will immediately be a slew of posts about exactly the same thing. Not going to use specific examples but as a for instance - somebody posts that someone made a comment about their shopping on the conveyor belt in the supermarket and more than 20% of posts in the following few hours will be on a similar theme, despite this particular situation never havng been mentioned in the entire history of MN.

Butchyrestingface · 04/11/2019 15:06

Head tilt and tinkly laugh

That one pure gies me the wet boak.

AryaStarkWolf · 04/11/2019 15:09

I've heard that one loads in r/l. The one that always annoys me that i only ever read on MN (although it probably exists outside MN ) is "put on your big girls pants" what does that even mean?

BareKneesDeCourcy · 04/11/2019 15:19

Soz, I’m sure.

littlepaddypaws · 04/11/2019 16:04

32nd ha,ha you are funny, not, and you missed the point of what i was getting at about stupid catch phases being over used. some recent posters have got my drift though.
