Why are you considering it, what are your criteria and your budget and your alternatives ?

ThatUserNamesTakenTryAnother · 03/11/2019 20:23

Best on a travel forum really not aibu🙄

PollyFeather · 03/11/2019 20:26

No real budget. We considered Dubai ( I know, totally different!) but too far for the amount of days we have free

Worked there for a short period a few years ago. It was winter and very cold - there's a stiff wind off the Baltic for sure. Nice place, coffee shops, Vasa, winding alleys nice bars and restaurants. I should think a short break would be very nice.

superram · 03/11/2019 20:28

My favourite city. Lovely at Christmas. Go to Skansen and the natural history museum. I love it x

PollyFeather · 03/11/2019 20:30

@JosephineDeBeauharnais @superram ooh that sounds pretty good. I am just reading up on Skansen

It's a lovely city. The Vasa museum is unmissable.

TeddyBeans · 03/11/2019 20:35

Skansen and old town (gamla Stan) are my two favourite places in Stockholm! It's like any big city, museums and cafes and touristy things galore! You won't have any trouble filling 3 days

SmallPinkBear · 03/11/2019 20:40

We went in the summer last year and loved it. Loads for our toddler to do. I bet it is lovely around Christmas time too, through probably very cold!

Babdoc · 03/11/2019 20:42

The Abba museum is great fun. You can perform on stage alongside holograms of the group, and they video it for you. You can sit in the jeep from the Mama Mia film, wear Meryl Streep's hat and get a photo. And see all Abba's costumes, hear the music, look at their biographies, etc.
We were in Stockholm for a day on a Baltic cruise last May. The approach by water is stunning, through an archipelago of 2000 islands.
Unfortunately though, the whole of the old town was dug up for roadworks and new piping, so everything was behind wooden hoardings and chain link fencing, with diggers and rubble everywhere. I hope it's all cleared up before your visit, OP!

Hellofromtheotherside2020 · 03/11/2019 20:46

Yes go! Such a beautiful city. If you can, get the stockholm city pass which gives you travel and entry to lots of tourist attractions, skansen museum included. I love Sweden. I'm in Australia now and miss those impromptu and quick flights across Europe!
Definitely better than Dubai too.

JenetteFranky · 03/11/2019 20:47

No I wouldn’t bother it’s quite banal

Hagbeth · 03/11/2019 20:50

November is the worst month to visit Stockholm. Dark and cold.

CMOTDibbler · 03/11/2019 20:51

I love Stockholm. I've stayed in a few hotels, but my favourite is the Stallmastaregarden which isn't in the city centre

CMOTDibbler · 03/11/2019 20:52

Aargh - but is on the edge of a park and a very easy bus ride into the city centre

MissDemelzaCarne · 03/11/2019 20:57

avocadochocolate · 03/11/2019 20:58

Went there November 2018 and loved it. Stayed in the ABBA hotel..... not it's real name but it is the hotel that has the ABBA Museum in it and it is owned by Bjorn. As others have said, loved Skansen (which is opposite the hotel) and also the Vaasa ship. I'm not really interested in ships but it blew me away.

A couple of tips: book the express train online well in advance to save money, buy a travel card in the airport on arrival, and don't bother with cash because you can't use it - it's plastic only.

LadyofMisrule · 03/11/2019 20:59

I love Stockholm. Vasa museum. The History museum. Gamla Stan. Sitting outside bars, wrapped in blankets. Ferries breaking through the ice in the harbour (ferries are included in the weekly rail tickets). If you have young kids, Junibacken is bloody amazing. I love the Nobel museum; their carrot cake and coffee are to die for. Wrap up warm.

PegasusReturns · 03/11/2019 21:01

I could think of a thousand places to visit and revisit before I'd go back to Stockholm.

I've been to 60+ countries, 100s of towns and cities and there are only a few places I wouldn't return to. Stockholm is one.

SinkGirl · 03/11/2019 21:07

Why Pegasus?

We went for Eurovision in 2016. I thought it was absolutely beautiful. We loved it. I’m sure it feels very different in winter, depends whether you like extreme cold etc - I would love it but DH probably not!

Peony99 · 03/11/2019 21:09

I've had great fun there. There aren't masses of must see sights (except the Vasa which is amazing), but it's a lovely place to wander and lots of interesting little bits.

The town hall is surprisingly interesting.

giggleshizz · 03/11/2019 21:10

I'm biased as it's my home town so definitely worth visiting. It can be cosy in December but it will get dark around 3pm and be cold and this will limit you walking around the city which is the best way to see it IMO.

If you do go, both Skansen and Gamla stan have nice Christmas markets. You can sample traditional Christmas fayre at many locations, Ulrikdahls Wardhus is fab. Vasa is great as indoors. Museums are generally free. I'd avoid ABBA and Viking museum unless you are desperate as they are quite expensive. Lots of free stuff to do.

Don't forget to dress for the weather!

JellyfishAndShells · 03/11/2019 21:14

Lovely for a short break - the amazing Vasa museum, the old town, little ferries that hop about, walks around winding streets. But we went at the beginning of October and were told we had hit an unusually warm few days - the wandering around the streets and by the water would not be anything like as pleasurable in the cold, IMO .

PollyFeather · 03/11/2019 21:15

Mixed reviews then! Mainly positive though. Am compiling a list of places to visit - thank you

Good tip about it being dark at 3pm! Hadn't considered that
