It’s an amazing city and I’ve no idea why it isn’t more popular. I loved it.

However I went in summer, so the dynamic in winter is probably totally different.

But go anyway Smile

Patapouf · 03/11/2019 21:23

There's nice food, nice museums, pretty architecture etc etc but it will be v cold.

It's expensive is isn't the kind of city you will want to flit from cafe to cafe if you just want to have a mooch. I would go back but I'm not in a hurry to do so.

If you have a large budget, stay at the Victory Hotel (or maybe the Lady Hamilton Hotel), both in the old city

The Vasa Museum

Hallwylska Museum (old amazing museum town house which is a complete time capsule )

Book some nice restaurants and spend one night out on Östermalm nightlife and one night out on Södermalm nightlife. I don’t know which places are good anymore, but the difference in nightlife used to be quite amazing when I lived there

Placemarking...Thinking of going here next summer- either Stockholm or Copenhagen. Stokholm looks amazing in the guidebooks/ websites.

WickedGoodDoge · 03/11/2019 21:38

DS(17) spent a couple of days in Stockholm last summer. He loved it and it must have been easy to get around because he didn’t message me once to work out how to get anywhere (Norway was quite different with some stressy moments grin ). People will tell you you can’t use cash, but while the ABBA museum is card only, DS only used cash (because my bank card was for emergencies only!) and had no problems.

He loved the Vasa museum. Get there for opening before the crowds.

Had one day there in June on a Baltic cruise - it poured with rain - we got very wet and saw very little. And I was so disappointed; my DDinlaw is Swedish, from Stockholm, and she picked the tour for me. But the Vasa was excellent and we had a nice lunch at Skansen and a boat trip.

I have been in December and in early January, it is so beautiful. It gets dark very early, so you can wander around little streets all lit up. There are great little cafes. I love it .

PegasusReturns · 03/11/2019 22:12

@SinkGirl

We didn't find much to do ( beyond the vasa which was good but only really filled two hours) and I'm a massive foodie but wasn't overly impressed.

DH and I went in Feb with four children, it was cold, wet and dark all day - definitely not wandering and stopping at bars weather. I just didn't love it Sad

I'm sure you've got the message by now but if you do go, wrap up!

We went one year in April, after an unusually long, cold winter - there were bits of ice floating down the river from Lake Malaren (just above Stockholm), and we saw lots of frozen lakes from the train windows on our journey from the south of Sweden. Still enjoyed it though. I especially likes Gamla Stan and Skansen (Vasa was closed at the time, and ABBA hadn't yet opened, so can't comment on those).

AndTheSeaRollsOn · 03/11/2019 22:35

It’s my favourite place in the whole world - Sodermalm is my favourite island. Last went in winter. It is cold but bearable with the right winter warmers. The Christmas fair at the Royal Stables is a personal fave but the one on Gamla Stan is great too.

SirVixofVixHall · 03/11/2019 22:36

Snow on the ground both times I was there, but we were in and out of shops and cafes, I don’t remember it being at all unpleasant. I hate the heat more than the cold though, even though I am a chilly person. We just wrapped up well.

LittleCandle · 03/11/2019 22:38

Loved Stockholm and would go back any day. I second all the places mentioned above.

PandaandCat · 03/11/2019 22:43

We went in August and liked it - in December would go to Lapland instead so you'll get snow, husky safaris, reindeer safari, snowmobiles etc. You may just get cold, dark and rain in Stockholm.

BarbaraStrozzi · 03/11/2019 22:49

Stunningly beautiful city and I'd go back there like a shot.

Smelborp · 03/11/2019 22:50

Yes, I t’s brilliant. I liked the coffee tram particularly on cold winter days there. When we were there in winter, they had braziers outside cafes to warm your hands. It was great.

Vasa, Skansen, mulled wine, ginger cookies - all good.

LaurieMarlow · 03/11/2019 22:59

Vasa and Skansen are two of the best tourist attractions I’ve ever been to.

They’re so well executed and different.

hopeishere · 04/11/2019 07:27

We were there in the summer and loved it. Not sure about in the cold and dark. Vas's is amazing. ABBA was bunged and expensive.
