Just finished a course of antibiotics. Have horrendous stomach pains. Seem to be coming in waves where I can't move - just crouched on the bathroom floor. Keep going dizzy and hot like I'm about to be sick.

I've tried taking paracetamol, ibruprofen, codine, rennie, gavascon, wind settlers (just incase of trapped wind - pretty certain it's not)

The pain is bad but manageable. however, When the waves come I can't move and hurts so much it's hard to breathe. I have to just curl up on the floor and wait for it to pass.

I've Called 111. They're going to call back within 2 hours. Which seems fine but when a wave comes... It's worse than when I gave birth!

PS - I found this online:

I had a very similar pain when taking antibiotics, I called for an ambulance for the first time ever, i'm 61 as I couldn't straighten up and it was agony. They told me to make my own way to the hospital as it wasn't life threatening. By the time I managed to get someone up, it was 3am and the pain had subsided. My dr said I had a reaction tothe antibiotics 2000mg a day. Now when I have antibiotics I also have to have two types of antacid. In your case I would ring 999 and they wil advise.

PointlessUsername · 03/11/2019 02:08

How long ago did you speak to 111?

Adogwithabone · 03/11/2019 02:12

Oh god I feel so stupid. Was sprawling out on the bathroom floor and the doorbell rings and a paramedic was there! So about an hour after the 111 call which is really quick!

Confusing as they said a clinician would call me back, nothing about sending over a paramedic so I was quite surprised. He said it can happen if a clinician is too busy to call back. Of course once he was here no waves of pain came so I felt so silly he was here and not at a proper emergency. It was me just saying 'well my tummy hurts a bit'

My plan was to speak to 111 when they called back and then go from there!

The paramedic couldn't find anything wrong with me and said it sounds like gallstones. I haven't had a wave of pain for about 20 mins so he said if I get another wave, go straight to urgent care.

So that's the new plan. A little nervous of lying down as that's when it hurts the most so don't want to get into bed.

Feel so guilty and ridiculous that I've waisted a paramedics time. I was willing a wave of pain to come so he could see what it was like but it must have looked like I was fine.

Sounds like gallstones pain to me. If you can manage to be sick, the pain usually eases of afterwards

badfurday · 03/11/2019 02:18

Sounds like classic gall stones. As a PP said, one of the worst pains going and always was worse for me laying down. Trying sitting up in bed. Have you had any particular rich food that may have triggered it? My first attack was on Christmas Day evening a few years ago now. Ended up in hospital but took a few months to be diagnosed. I felt instantly better once they removed my gall bladder following diagnosis.

Hope you start to feel better and get some sleep.

MustShowDH · 03/11/2019 02:59

I assume any pain like this is trapped wind as I find that pain nearly unbearable.
Got caught out when I was pregnant - thought it was trapped wind, turned out I was in labour three weeks early.

Sorry, not helpful.

Hope you do a few big farts and feel fine!

kateandme · 03/11/2019 03:08

i no this sound next to rediculous but those antibiotics have been known to competely double you over too for some people.sometims causing the shits, sometimes causing such a taught tummy it cna feel like you cant inhale and exhale.sometimes liek their is a ballon in your diaphram.

WhatTiggersDoBest · 03/11/2019 03:30

Sounds like a stomach ulcer. Antibiotics can be the tipping point especially if you're someone who takes ibuprofen/diclofenac on an empty stomach.
Omeprazole sorted me right out when I had this.

adayatthebeach · 03/11/2019 03:38

I’ve had a gall bladder attack and so has my husband. We both described it like having a spear through you.

Bluewavescrashing · 03/11/2019 03:47

Don't worry, you needed help and that's what 111 is for. Hope you manage some sleep and feel better in the morning.

Nat6999 · 03/11/2019 04:10

When I was having gallstones attacks, the only place I could get any way near comfortable was to kneel on the stairs with a hot water bottle under my chest or the pregnancy position on knees, chest to floor & bum in the air.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 03/11/2019 04:45

the pregnancy position on knees, chest to floor & bum in the air.

Pretty sure that position is called "doggy style" 🤣

OP if the paramedic told you to go to A&E if you get another wave of pain, then make sure you do. Rather than calling an ambulance I would get a cab if feasible!

tolerable · 03/11/2019 04:45

do whatchu thinks right.sounds like allergy.gp 111,999,a ande just ficx it

Nat6999 · 03/11/2019 04:54

EvenMoreFuriousVexation When I was pregnant & suffering from horrendous combined heartburn & trapped wind, it was the only position I could get comfortable in, I spent many nights like that.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 03/11/2019 05:12

I'm sorry Nat it just struck my funny bone! That sounds awfully uncomfortable for you - I hope you're able to sleep more comfortably now!

StrongerThanIThought76 · 03/11/2019 05:53

PPs saying appendicitis, do you even know where on the body that is/have you read the OP?

She's feeling pain in upper belly just below ribs, nowhere near where her appendix is ffs.

Op follow the medical advice given by the fully trained professionals who have seen and.assessed you in person, not randomers on the Internet!

Adogwithabone · 03/11/2019 08:47

Thanks for all your suppotive messages! Got a couple of.hours sleep and I'm feeling a bit better. Tender, a little shaky and quite sorry for myself. I haven't had a wave of pain since last night and the constant ache isn't as bad either so I've decided to try and get in at the GP tomorrow but if anything worsens or I have another wave, DH will take me to urgent care.

Thanks again for your messages. It was quite scary when a wave happened and I had to put all my efforts into just continuing to breathe. I can't even describe the pain. But felt less vunerable and alone after when I read your posts.

I had pancreatitis due to gallstones and this sounds similar!

Twinkletoenails · 03/11/2019 09:05

They need to do blood tests and a scan

Cactusmum · 03/11/2019 09:14

dont worry we've all been there...i went to the ER with what i thought was severe haemorrhoid pain.. been suffering for about 3 weeks..finally had enough, struggled to even sit properly to do the 15 min drive there, turned out to be an anal fissure and they couldn't do that much and by the time i got seen the pain had eased off so i felt a bit dumb. (still in chronic pain 4 weeks later some days but ive seen a specialist and working through the treatment options) Hope you get it sorted soon.

Italiangreyhound · 03/11/2019 09:18

"Feel so guilty and ridiculous that I've waisted a paramedics time."

You haven't wasted anything.

Go and see your doc and get it checked. Flowers

MeClavdivs · 03/11/2019 09:23

Don’t feel stupid at all.

A friend had similar and ended up being stretchered into an ambulance. Spent hours in hospital and it turned out to be trapped wind. She’d been in agony.

Pain is the body’s way of saying that there’s something wrong - and if you’re not sure, you should always let the doctors decide! For the same money it could have been extremely serious.

Hope you’re feeling better soon OP.

unfathomablefathoms · 03/11/2019 09:24

You didn't waste their time. With your symptoms it was really important they made sure you weren't in an emergency situation. That was not a judgement call you could make alone. They safeguarded your health. That's not a waste.

Andysbestadventure · 03/11/2019 09:24

Gallstones or appendix OP. Call an Ambulance. Right now.
