Or is this person an eBay CF

Just sold something on eBay, auction, 3 bids, non essential house decor item, less than £10. The person has just messaged me to say they can't pay me until Nov 11th, "hope that's ok", no apology or attempt to actually ask if that's feasible. I've heard it all selling things on eBay and Facebook, but this is a first!

That's just over a week, wouldn't really bother me.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 02/11/2019 19:54

Totally cheeky! Payment in 48 hours else don't bid! Cancel it.

Thehop · 02/11/2019 19:55

CF indeed.

If they’d asked first id be okay with it, But I’d cancel that one, because they were rude.

kattekitt · 02/11/2019 20:09

I’ve had this happen too, they are a cf

orangeteal · 02/11/2019 20:11

@Thehop yeah that's how I feel, the fact they didn't ask, just assumed it was ok and like it's a totally normal thing to do. The eBay notification says 48 hours, wonder if theyll automatically cancel? I don't want negative feedback!

cheesewitheverything · 02/11/2019 20:12

That's happened to me a few times on Ebay and I always say 'that's fine' because I don't think it's a big deal. I think this is what Ebay is all about, just doing deals with people in a friendly way, person to person.

orangeteal · 02/11/2019 20:13

@cheesewitheverything if they'd just asked me I'd be fine with it tbh, but they told me.

OP posts:
Jeezoh · 02/11/2019 20:14

I’d say it’s not ok and they either pay within the right times and or lose the item

Lhastingsmua · 02/11/2019 20:15

I’m not sure, if they seem like they may be a problem buyer (other feedback) then I would cancel due to non payment and re-list.

However I think it’s sad if someone has to wait until payday (etc) to pay >£10 for something, so I’m definitely sympathetic and would help them if I could.

Andromeida59 · 02/11/2019 20:15

I'd report them to EBay. They should have had the decency to make you aware prior to the auction ending.

YelloThere · 02/11/2019 20:16

I used to wonder why sellers PT in the description ‘buyer must pay within 24 hours of sale or don’t bid’

Until I had the same experience as you. Sold something and got a message saying they would pay me on pay day which was in 2 weeks!!!

So now I always add that comment.

orangeteal · 02/11/2019 20:18

@Lhastingsmua I know what you mean, I'd be sympathetic if it was something like second hand clothes, but it's a bundle of wax melts ha....and half used packets so presumably not a gift though I can't know I suppose!

Oh no I'm being one of those MN CFs who's asking AIBU when I've made my mind up already 😂

OP posts:
Jeezoh · 02/11/2019 20:21

If you can’t afford it, don’t bid for it - it’s not rocket science!

SunshineAngel · 02/11/2019 20:25

This is why I only ever list on Buy it Now rather than auction - because payment is already done!

But honestly, is it a problem? If not, I'd be tempted to wait for it. But don't post until you've been paid!

If they don't pay though, definitely report to eBay, as a lot of people just try their luck.

katielilly · 02/11/2019 20:26

What's their feedback like and how long they'd been on eBay would decide whether or not I'd cancel the item.

orangeteal · 02/11/2019 20:28

100% positive, 53 transactions since 2013 so they don't use it often, most of the feedback ironically says prompt payment ha.

Ilovelblue · 02/11/2019 20:50

If you cancel the sale, I'm not convinced they can give you bad feedback?

For what it is and for what they are going to pay (eventually), I think I'd let it go this time but I would then block the seller so they can't pull a fast one on you again. (Probably wouldn't bother giving feedback either).

OneHanded · 02/11/2019 20:51

You can get eBay involved and they can’t leave feedback

ViciousJackdaw · 02/11/2019 21:12

they didn't ask, just assumed it was ok and like it's a totally normal thing to do

That's because she's done this to other people in the past and got away with it. You can open an unpaid item case 48 hours after the auction closed and this gives her a set amount of time to pay (sorry, I cannot recall how long off the top of my head). If she doesn't cough up, she'll get a 'strike' and will end up with a ban if she gets too many of these.

I feel your pain, I've just opened two cases today and I've a feeling I'll have to open another one tomorrow. And yes, if the buyers had messaged beforehand and said 'I can't pay until XX date', I'd have been OK with it, it's just the CFness of it.

Thefemalekeithrichards · 02/11/2019 21:15

Make sure your settings are ‘immediate payment’ with PayPal

neveradullmoment99 · 02/11/2019 21:20

@Thefemalekeithrichards You can only have immediate payment if its a buy it now. In this case it was an auction.
I think its a major failing of ebay. Payment should be immediate. I think its a disgrace. No other place that sells things would allow delayed payment.

TeacupDrama · 02/11/2019 21:36

in a real life auction you don't pay the second the hammer falls people leave bids with auctioneer or have a telephone or online bid; though just like ebay there are terms normally payment within 48 hours and collection within a week. also if you sell on facebook gumtree you only pay when you collect item, actually lots of places allow delayed payment or payment on invoice, I pay for my household heating oil like this they deliver and send me a bill, you can also pay most bills like this even though most people use direct debits

there is no way you could have immediate payment with auctions on ebay though the 48 hour is perfectly reasonable for payment

bookwormsforever · 02/11/2019 21:43

Yanbu! When I eBay stuff I like to take it all to the post office together, not in dribs abd drabs. She’s costing you money. Cheeky.

WatchingFromTheWings · 02/11/2019 22:38

I sold something on eBay once, years ago, for £170. Buyer wanted to pay in weekly instalments of £10. 🤦‍♀️ I said no.

Doormat247 · 02/11/2019 23:52

I'm getting fed up of this type of thing. I send a reminder after a couple of days and then get a message along the lines of 'I'll be paying on ..... , thanks'.
I even warn on my listings that I open cases after 4 days. It's just rude to expect people to wait until you can be bothered to pay.

My DP has been waiting for 5wks for a CF to pick up some items as they're apparently travelling a distant part of the world and can't collect any time soon. This wasn't even mentioned before bidding and they paid by Paypal so that he can't just go ahead and relist.
