To think veganism is not for children?

Yes, I am aware that it is perfectly possible to have a healthy vegan diet at any age. I know that.

However, it is more difficult and easier to get wrong if you want to be vegan. It still is restrictive (even with all of the new stuff coming out) as in you need to tell hosts, check menus in advance etc.

It's a barrier that has to be overcome. I don't understand why you would do that to someone who has no choice in the matter.

Lots of kids go through a fussy phase too, add veganism in and surely you're at a high risk of health problems?

I think what I'm getting at, is that childhood nutrition can be hard enough as it is, so it just feels wrong to make it harder for reasons that do not directly benefit the child.

The link a pp posted upthread, seems to say that dairy free formula should only be given under medical supervision. Breast milk is the best choice nutritionally and dairy formula the next best, from what I understand. Obviously, if a baby has an allergy, it's better than them dying Confused

formerbabe · 03/11/2019 13:53

Oh and why don't the NHS recommend non dairy formula for all babies then regardless of allergies?

Ziraphale · 03/11/2019 13:57

@formerbabe That doesn't answer the question at all. Yes, we all know that babies with allergies should be under medical supervision, that's common sense.

My question isn't whether breastmilk is best either. My question is, what with you being the self proclaimed nutritional expert in this thread, whether you personally think dairy allergic babies who have to take non dairy formula are malnourished?

fascicle · 03/11/2019 13:58

Crazyoldmaurice
I saw someone a few pages back saying something about breastfed babies technically being vegan for the first 6 months of their lives... well no actually because breastmilk isn't vegan is it? Its milk from a mammal.

A vegan who does not understand veganism...

crispycrisis · 03/11/2019 13:59

@formerbabe I can guarantee my child is healthier and eats a wider diet than your own child. You should focus on extending the food she has and not worrying about mine.

SidekickSally · 03/11/2019 14:02

“I don’t agree with restricting a child’s diet”, I certainly don’t either but I think the argument about vegans restricting diet is lacking logic when you consider the standard western diet that for most people is lacking oily fish and plenty of veg, nuts and seeds.
I not vegan but my kids are through choice and they are healthier than me and DH as they think about their nutrition a lot more carefully.

formerbabe · 03/11/2019 14:04

@crispycrisis

You continually make personal comments towards me. I suggest you concentrate on giving your own child the chance to make their own choices.

crispycrisis · 03/11/2019 14:07

I just think it's incredibly hypocritical of you to critique a vegan diet when you've said in previous threads your child only eats processed ham sandwiches. You continually spend time on these threads stating that you can't 'technically be vegan from
Birth' as you need breastmilk. Yet your own child's diet is hugely substandard. Why don't you spend time researching on her diet? Or making new foods for her to try?

formerbabe · 03/11/2019 14:08

My question is, what with you being the self proclaimed nutritional expert in this thread, whether you personally think dairy allergic babies who have to take non dairy formula are malnourished?

I have no idea. However, the NHS does not recommend non dairy formula for all babies? Why don't you answer my question as to why you think that is?

Ziraphale · 03/11/2019 14:08

Yes, for God's sake won't someone listen to the kids? Because children are famous for making wise and healthy choices and totally wouldn't just live off haribo given half a chance.

crispycrisis · 03/11/2019 14:08

@formerbabe if babies were biologically safe to drinks cows milk would you let your newborn nurse from the udder of a cow?

plantainchips · 03/11/2019 14:08

formerbabe
I hope you offer that opportunity to your own children. Allowing them to decide if they want to attend school. If they want to do their own homework ... Smile

crispycrisis · 03/11/2019 14:09

@formerbabe does let her own child make her mind up and choose. That's why she only eats one type of food... processed ham sandwiches!!

formerbabe · 03/11/2019 14:10

your child only eats processed ham sandwiches

Fuck off.

My childs diet does not only consist of ham sandwiches.

I never said processed ham either.

Ziraphale · 03/11/2019 14:11

I have no idea. However, the NHS does not recommend non dairy formula for all babies? Why don't you answer my question as to why you think that is?

Because you answered it yourself. They recommend human breast milk.

motherheroic · 03/11/2019 14:11

Have to laugh at the people in here ranting about vegans meanwhile their child will only eat a couple of different foods and they're happy to facilitate that.

crispycrisis · 03/11/2019 14:12

I think I've hit a nerve with @formerbabe

ohhhhlivia · 03/11/2019 14:13

@crispycrisis

Attacking her child's own diet from another thread is fucking low.

OP posts:
Ziraphale · 03/11/2019 14:14

Also @formerbabe all ham is processed, that's literally the definition of ham, it's processed pork. Otherwise it would just be pork.

formerbabe · 03/11/2019 14:15

@crispycrisis

You've hit a nerve because you've incorrectly stated my dcs diet consists of only processed ham sandwiches. That's incorrect and quite frankly you must be quite insane to think I feed my child that for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Give your head a wobble. I also never said processed ham so god knows where you got that from.

Anyway, I'm off to make a roast chicken dinner for my family.

crispycrisis · 03/11/2019 14:15

Isn't this entire thread about attacking children's diets?

crispycrisis · 03/11/2019 14:15

All ham is processed...

ohhhhlivia · 03/11/2019 14:17

No, it's questioning whether artificially restricting a child's diet for no reason that will benefit the child, is a good idea.

At no point would I be so fucking nasty as to attack the diet of an individual child. Look at you, "my child is healthier than your child"...

What are you, 14?

OP posts:
MustardScreams · 03/11/2019 14:17

A LOT of vegan food (cheese, yogurt, meat subs, bread, milk, supplements etc etc) are processed as well though. Let’s not make out being vegan is morally superior on the processed front!

ohhhhlivia · 03/11/2019 14:18

Anything you didn't pick yourself is technically processed. Stupid way to look at food actually.
