Is my cat being unreasonable

To insist on only drinking water out of the kids tumbler in the bath?

For context : DCat is 7 years old, neutered male. He has a split food dish but we stopped putting water in one half as he would crunch his kibble over the water, which would then get manky, so both sides of the bowl are for food, it has been this way for years. We also have a dog, who has a bowl of water down 24/7,cleaned regularly. DCat has always shared the bowl (will only drink it via his paw though, dipping the paw into the bowl then licking the water from his paw, very messy but whatever), again this has been the case for years.

Now, all of a sudden he will ONLY drink from the blue plastic tumbler that lives in the bathroom to assist with washing the kids' hair. To the point that he miaws outside the bathroom door if it's shut, and will race us upstairs and straight into the bath to alert us if his cup needs filling. This water, he will lap up directly, no needing to use his paw. He would apparently die of thirst if the tumbler was not available to him.

Is he BU? Why will he not drink from the dog bowl anymore? DCat and DDog don't appear to have had an argument, they both ignore each other to the same extent they always have. The water hasn't changed that I'm aware of. Does bathroom water taste better than kitchen water? Is it possible there is a faint residue of shampoo that is tempting him to the tumbler?

Is my cat an arsehole BU?

Cat's do all sorts of weird things we don't understand. They're not being unreasonable. Just "being a cat".

We are nothing but slaves to their whims.

Our cat used to drink out of the toilet, even though he had a perfectly acceptable bowl of water.

Cats will cat. shrug

MitziK · 02/11/2019 12:43

Fluffyarsed DTwatCat #2 has just strolled up to the coffee table and attempted to steal one of the lumps of cement Hallowe'en Fairy Cakes DP made on Thursday night.

That is weird. Her own crunchies are softer than those monstrosities. But I suppose she liked the idea of something vaguely food related being on a handy cakestand.

Going to put her crunchies bowl on it later to see if I'm right, rather than because I'm actually insane

Ilikeanimalsmorethanpeople · 02/11/2019 13:18

Mine will only drink water from the drain....Hmm

BarbedBloom · 02/11/2019 13:43

My cat will only drink out of a human glass with freshly poured water. She has her own glass now. Cats are always unreasonable. Unfortunately we have to pander to her as she won't eat wet food so gets dehydrated. I expect she will soon want to be carried around on a cushion

Loyaultemelie · 02/11/2019 13:50

I have a dog bowl drinker (but only if said dog has dropped part of his dinner in it) and a bathcat (sink occasionally acceptable alternative).

Bathcat is very particular. You must fill to her desired level and temperature whilst she bats at the water coming from the tap and walks round and round the edge. Then you must get in promptly to allow her to sit on your stomach and have a loooooonnng drink. Then you must sit still while she dips each paw in a certain order up to what would be cat calf height. Then you must allow her to sit on the corner of the bath to supervise you washing. Reading of kindles will not be tolerated and said kindle will be swatted with wet paw until you stop. When you are deemed clean she will pull the plug chain so you can't think about that kindle again.

VenusClapTrap · 02/11/2019 13:50

Dcat drinks out of a bone china teacup and saucer on the windowsill.

I also note you haven’t been fanning your cat with a palm branch while they relax on a chaiselong

I recently purchased a chaise longue. Dcat has decided this is hers and uses it for her morning arse cleaning ablutions.

What is it with cats preferring dog crunchies AND dogs preferring cat crunchies? Did the manufacturers get the labels wrong?

ToPlanZ · 02/11/2019 14:50

Of course the cat is being unreasonable. Hes a cat.

One of mine went through a phase of only drinking from the running bath tap. Had to be the warm tap. Stopped as soon as it started and went back to his bowl!

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 02/11/2019 14:59

Dogs eat any old shit given the chance.
Cats will eat dogs treats because it annoys the dog and annoying the dog is it's main purpose in life.

I miss having a cat!

fee1234 · 02/11/2019 15:04

My cat will only drink from a tall tumbler on top of my dining table. Always looks a bit out of place but I've just admitted defeat and accepted this is how we live now.

In the house our cat will only drink form his filtered wataer fountain that is topped up with...filtered water, oh and then goes upstairs and has to have a drink from his bowl upstairs.

Outside he will drink any manky water but specially loves the water fountain which of course was provided especially for him. not

pollypocket952 · 02/11/2019 15:19

Just read your post to my kitty bear 🐻 and she says " ner ner .... I have my own separate food & water bowls "

I think your cat is trying to tell you something... as in wants to eat nibbles & not have water directly next to it. And your kitty clearly says noooo to scoffing nibbles another way!

My kitty has 3 separate pot bowls, nibbles, wet food & water & they are all placed on mat. I think your kitty gets pissed off with the manky water too .... please take the hint & get separate bowls 😽

I find the ceramic/pot whatever they are bowls easy to clean as I just pour hot water out of kettle over them & crusty dried food is easily removed with no scrubbing required.

JustDanceAddict · 02/11/2019 15:23

Cats are unreasonable cos they can be!
My cat is obsessed w drinking water out of normal glasses and enjoys a lovely bit of eau de toilet on a regular basis. I often see the furry bum sticking out of the pan.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 02/11/2019 15:58

I imagine all our cats typing grumpily on Catsnet about how humans will only drink water out of glasses and not out of baths and puddles, the unreasonable demanding bastards.

TheCatInChargeOfTheOP · 02/11/2019 16:00

My owner (@ThrilledToTiddlyBits) is being unreasonable. As lord high empurrr-er of this home, I can choose to drink what I like, when I like, and how I like. As mere humans, I expect my people to refill my plastic cup when I demand it and not shut me out of my new cafe.

I have read the ideas here with some interest, and now plan to see if water from the toilet tastes nicer than my beautiful blue cup.

StroppyWoman · 02/11/2019 16:02

All cats are unreasonable. It's one of their defining characteristics.

morporkia · 02/11/2019 16:06

My cat will only drink directly from a tap. Because she is an unreasonable arsehole. She will literally sit on a sink full of dishes and look at me aggressively. She’s a bitch but I love her.

iamabox · 02/11/2019 16:07

My arsehole of a cat will not drink out of his water dish at all. But will happily drink from the bathroom sink, or the big bucket in the garden after it's been raining. He occasionally like to lick the water of the wooden bench, also In the garden.

Shit, posted wrong photo, have reported.

CantstandmLMs · 02/11/2019 17:12

My cats thinks you're being unreasonable at they will only drink vimto direct from my glass ffs 🤦🏻‍♀️

FlamingoAndJohn · 02/11/2019 17:14

Cats are not unreasonable, everyone who doesn’t bend to their demands is.

My girl will only drink oat milk, pond water, puddles or water from the garden tap that as gone on the floor.

The only exception is water in a glass on my bedside table when she wants to wake me up.

CantstandmLMs · 02/11/2019 17:18

My cats just given me the look and I realise it's because her actual favourite water source is my bath with me in it and preferably with bubbles!

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 02/11/2019 17:20

I live in fear of doing something like that Barbara, have reported it for you too so hopefully it goes swiftly!

BarbaraofSeville · 02/11/2019 17:26

Thanks City. I've nearly accidentally posted my personal email address, that includes my quite unusual name, before due to the perils of autocorrect or general fat fingeredness, but spotted it at the last minute.

I was trying to post pictures of the tumblers and mini oven dish from Ikea that I have repurposed as cat drinking vessels but clearly that is technologically beyond me.

I may also have had an early gin, my excuse being that, due to the fireworks that have been going on for a week or two, some of my 6 month old foster kittens are finding it quite traumatic to the extent that they are pissing all over the house as they don't want to go outside, but thankfully they are all currently asleep.
