Is my cat being unreasonable

To insist on only drinking water out of the kids tumbler in the bath?

For context : DCat is 7 years old, neutered male. He has a split food dish but we stopped putting water in one half as he would crunch his kibble over the water, which would then get manky, so both sides of the bowl are for food, it has been this way for years. We also have a dog, who has a bowl of water down 24/7,cleaned regularly. DCat has always shared the bowl (will only drink it via his paw though, dipping the paw into the bowl then licking the water from his paw, very messy but whatever), again this has been the case for years.

Now, all of a sudden he will ONLY drink from the blue plastic tumbler that lives in the bathroom to assist with washing the kids' hair. To the point that he miaws outside the bathroom door if it's shut, and will race us upstairs and straight into the bath to alert us if his cup needs filling. This water, he will lap up directly, no needing to use his paw. He would apparently die of thirst if the tumbler was not available to him.

Is he BU? Why will he not drink from the dog bowl anymore? DCat and DDog don't appear to have had an argument, they both ignore each other to the same extent they always have. The water hasn't changed that I'm aware of. Does bathroom water taste better than kitchen water? Is it possible there is a faint residue of shampoo that is tempting him to the tumbler?

Is my cat an arsehole BU?

TSS cats are giving zero shits. Just do the water in whatever they want today. Tomorrow is another day.

walkinwar · 02/11/2019 00:40

My cat has discovered a penchant for gravy as she too despises her clean freshly filled water bowl which she shares with no one 🤷🏼‍♀️. In fact thinking about it I don't think I've ever seen her drink from it, not once so not sure why I bother washing and filling it daily?! Anyway back to the gravy, we must buy only the most heinously expensive brand of cat food otherwise she would both die of hunger and thirst. We must also add a little drop of boiling water to the jelly/gravy and gently mix it through. She will drink this. As long as it's fresh. Only when she wants to.

MardiBras · 02/11/2019 00:52

All cats are unreasonable. That is why mine will sleep anywhere other than the very nice cozy bed bought for him.

My dog drinks from the cat’s water bowl and the cat drinks from the dog’s water bowl. Neither of them appear to notice that one has ‘dog’ embossed on the side and the other has ‘cat’

They both prefer to drink from the pond or the muddy puddle that collects on the driveway 🙄

TurinBrakes · 02/11/2019 00:52

Best question ever!!!

My dog is like this and will only drink from a human pint glass for water.

So we have to keep pint glasses around the house (in corners) for him to drink out of. The small humans in the house also think they're for drinking which they are not.

Be very careful @3catsandcounting , lily pads are poisonous to cats:

FridalovesDiego · 02/11/2019 01:39

Of course he is not being unreasonable. Mine only drinks filtered water from a human glass. Or the toilet.

OwlBeThere · 02/11/2019 01:43

Neither of my cats will drink from anywhere other than the bathroom tap.
Oh wait, they will also drink from manky puddles.
Hmm

GenuineKlatchianPottery · 02/11/2019 01:48

Ancient Egyptians worshiped cats as Gods.
The cats have not forgot this.

Myshitisreal · 02/11/2019 01:52

Cats really are arseholes. We've two dedicated pint glasses for the cats. One has a thyroid problem and drinks a lot. The other had a very cute water dance ritual she HAS to do before she drinks 👀 😂 she likes to drink Tuna juice via the paw and sometimes water.

WatcherintheRye · 02/11/2019 01:54

Our cat will only drink out of my water glass on the bedside table or a very particular pint glass of water we leave by the fireplace.

This raises several questions:
Do you put the pint glass by the fireplace so that your cat can access it easily, or does the cat drink from it as it is there anyway?
If the former, how did you know he liked that particular glass?
If the latter, please tell me why you keep a pint glass of water by your fireplace?

Cats don't like having their water bowls close to their food bowls. God only knows why, but it's true.

My furry overlord likes drinking out of the pint glass of water I have beside me. If he can't get his face in, he uses his paw to scoop the water out. Sometimes I give him his own pint of water, which of course he ignores.

cheeseislife8 · 02/11/2019 01:59

YABU to expect your cat not to BU. Cats are inherently U.

Both cheesecats agree that your cat is being totally reasonable however... we had to buy a kitty drinking fountain for the older of the two overlords as she will only drink running water and I got sick of being woken whenever she fancied a sip.

Dunno... cats are in charge.

1forAll74 · 02/11/2019 02:29

Two of my cats are quite reasonable, they have a bowl of water ,a china one, in the kitchen, but the third cat, stands on his back legs , and drinks the water in the bird bath in the garden.

WooomanMoomin · 02/11/2019 02:31

We have a plastic measuring jug that is used the same way as your tumbler and my 5 year old cat only drinks from it and completely ignores her bowl. I have to put it in the sink and fill it for her every time I go in there. Halloween Hmm
My cat is definitely unreasonable.

DinoGreen · 02/11/2019 02:53

My cat has a fountain and he will drink from it occasionally (like yours OP using the dip-paw-and-lick method). However he much prefers to drink from any glass already in use by someone else. His other preferred spot is rainwater which collects on the glass top of the patio table outside.

custardbear · 02/11/2019 02:56

My cat only drinks out of the water butt using the paw method through the hole in the lid, she thinks your cat is posh

Wonderland18 · 02/11/2019 03:04

My cat found a way to spill his water regardless of whatever bowl it’s in. He’d tip or even just flick water out with his paws.. sometimes even taking washing out the washing basket to sit it inside his water dish.

He’s now only drinking if out of a solid porcelain casserole dish. No idea why we choose to do these things for cats but they clearly are superior and need to have their needs met

MiniMum97 · 02/11/2019 03:45

My cat only drinks from my glasses (drinking glasses not specs!). She prefers my pint glasses. So I thought I know,I'll give her her own pint glass of water (away from her food). Would she drink from it? No of course not - only my glasses are good enough to drink water from apparently.

All cats are arseholes unreasonable Grin

Dollywilde · 02/11/2019 05:16

DH and I have resorted to adult sippy cups at night time so as to avoid inadvertently drinking water in the middle of the night that has already been subjected to cat-face.

hippityhoppityboo · 02/11/2019 05:50

My dog is just as bad. Has a plastic Saucepan filled with water in our ensuite shower tray.

Fitsrightin · 02/11/2019 05:59

My cats water bowl is next to her food bowl and I've only once seen her drink from it. So now I'm learning they don't like the food and water bowls together. However if there's a bit of milk or cream in the bowl as a rare treat, she'll devour it, right next to the food bowl. She's playing me isn't she?

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 02/11/2019 06:01

My cat won't drink water at all. When she first moved in, she would ask for cows milk, obviously she can't have that so I bought her cat milk. Apparently that was incredibly U of me. I also tried cat soup, but she couldn't have been more disgusted if I'd vomited in a bowl and served it up to her.

Anyhoo, concerned about her not drinking I mentioned it to the vet who said a lot of cats don't. If they have wet food in gravy they don't really need to.
