Would you vote Green or Lib Dem if you didn't think it was a "wasted vote".

There is so much talk about tactical voting - I just wonder if everyone actually voted with their convictions whether it would radically change the face of UK politics.

A first past the post system really doesn't seem the best way.

I'd never vote Green, but I'm torn between labour and Lib Dem. I will be voting tactically this time for the first time ever because the Tories have to go.

aLilNonnyMouse · 01/11/2019 14:39

I wouldn't ever vote Lib Dem as their policies are much more right wing than my own views. Green, possibly, but I've not really looked into them so I can't say how much they differ from myself.

Labour match my personal politics quite well at the moment so unless they radically change I can't see myself voting for another party.

Squigean · 01/11/2019 14:45

I think the Britain would benefit from proportional representation. This whole tactical voting and thinking votes are wasted, is causing a complete mess.

JustAnotherMammi · 01/11/2019 14:45

I might vote Lib Dem pending polls. I probably would've voted Green Party, but there is ambiguity about whether their pro-trans is anti-women, science and LGB or not. So can't vote for them unless they're clearer

Gwiwer · 01/11/2019 14:46

I'd prefer to vote Lib Dem but will be tactically voting. The LD candidate got around 1% of the vote in my constituency last time.

ToLiveInPeace · 01/11/2019 14:47

Green, yes. Lib Dem, god no.

PhannyPharts · 01/11/2019 14:47

I've voted both in different elections in spite of knowing it would be wasted as I live in a tory safe seat. I dont want Brexit. I can't get behind Corbyn, just because he doesnt seem a strong confident leader to me in these times when we really need it.

On balance I will probably vote Lib Dem

ilovetofu · 01/11/2019 14:50

Oh PLEASE don't vote green or lob dem if it means the Tories will win! Come ON we need to end this crap!

BarbedBloom · 01/11/2019 15:01

I routinely vote green but will be voting tactically this time

MinnieMountain · 01/11/2019 15:05

I'm voting Green. Unfortunately I live in a very safe Tory seat so tactical voting won't help.

heartsonacake · 01/11/2019 15:05

I’d never vote Green, but I would vote Lib Dem.

Areyoufree · 01/11/2019 15:07

The thing is, it's not just about the party, but also about your local MP. Our MP is extremely good, so I will be voting for him. He's a Labour MP, so, while I might have otherwise been tempted to vote Lib Dem, I will be voting Labour, albeit voting for him, rather than the party.

Honeyroar · 01/11/2019 15:07

Yes I'd possibly vote green or lib dem under other circumstances.

I think that people who are saying they can't vote for Corbyn are basically voting for Boris.

Flippetydip · 01/11/2019 15:27

I can't in all conscience vote for either Tory or Labour. I just can't. I will have to vote Green or Lib Dem. I don't see the point in spoiling my paper -my vote will still be counted, albeit in a very small marginal way.

And no, that is not saying I'm voting for Johnson (why we can't stop calling him "Boris" and start calling him Johnson and getting rid of this pally, cutesy language I don't know), it's saying I'm not voting him but I'm not voting for Corbyn either.

Whether voting Green or Lib Dem is a wasted vote depends where you live - ask people in Brighton, Norfolk, Twickenham and other random places.

siriusblackthemischieviouscat · 01/11/2019 15:49

I vote lib dem and don't consider my vote wasted. I voted green in local elections as there was no lib dem option.

Babynamechangerr · 01/11/2019 15:53

The two places I've lived have always been a two horse race between labour and Conservative so no tactical voting needed.

I'm a Conservative voter, but if I lived in an area where Conservatives had no chance and was in between labour and lib dem, I would vote lib dem just to try and keep Labour out of government.

Dh votes Green even though they've got no chance in our area, and knows that, but wants to show his support for the cause (ie the environment) he feels most strongly about. He doesn't actually agree with any of their other policies but feels strongly about the environment.

Honeyroar · 01/11/2019 15:58

My point is, re voting for Boris Johnson is that the leave/remain voters are split 50/50 in this country. Most leavers are going to back BJ, so if the leavers are scattering their votes amongst other parties it's going to go the Tory's way, surely?

laughingnow · 01/11/2019 16:03

I vote Lib Dem or Green for MEP, Lib Dem or Ind locally, Lib Dem nationally. Sadly am in brutish Tory safe seat. MP has gone Lib Dem now but moving seats.
Principles are important. Tactical voting has its place. Spoilt votes are pointless.

SilverySurfer · 01/11/2019 16:43

I'm a Conservative voter so obviously I won't be voting for the LibDims who are a one policy party nor the Greens who have some pretty bonkers policies.

Flippetydip · 01/11/2019 16:56

@Honeyroar - my apologies, I take your point. Yes and no, I can only hope that the Brexit party split the leave vote.

I’m going to vote Lib Dem. I can’t vote either Tory or Labour.

Janedownourlane · 01/11/2019 17:03

I would vote Libdem of Green from choice but to get the Tories out I have to vote tactically. According to the website and checks we have made about last time's vote, we are in a potentially marginal seat, there are about 1000 votes in it. So I will have no option but to vote labour! (but I keep thinking what if the whole of my area turns up and votes Libdem but they miss winning by 1...my vote! This could keep me awake at night)

BertieBotts · 01/11/2019 17:04

I vote based on my local MP because I think having a good one or not makes a huge difference to people's lives. I look at their voting record but also their twitter and local news to see what they have been up to. If there were two or more decent candidates, then I would look at the party politics but in the absence of that I will go for the MP primarily.

RoseToes · 01/11/2019 17:06

I’d vote green, not Lib Dem though
