To be very frustrated with the obviously planted political posts on here already?

I’ve seen “I can’t possibly vote for” both main parties and their leaders since the election was called as well as (slightly) more subtle versions. I feel our discussion space is violated by forces seeking to manipulate us. (perhaps that’s a good thing if a large community of mostly women are worth trying to manipulate?)
AIBU to think HQ need to ban political posts unless they are official q and a sessions with politicians as long as they are brave enough to not vet censure the questions?

Censor! Sorry, autocorrect!

MustardScreams · 01/11/2019 08:22

You can’t ban political talk 6 weeks before an election! Silencing opinions because you think they’re bots? Utterly ridiculous idea.

scaryteacher · 01/11/2019 08:24

We need to be able to debate the election. We can all search to see if it's a first post or not...and have a long look at the syntax as well.

I think many have already decided how they'll vote looking at some on going threads.

I hope it doesn't get as vicious as it has done during previous election campaigns.

Dogsaresomucheasier · 01/11/2019 08:25

I don’t want to ban it, just try and cut out some of the crap and raise the standard of debate.

LoyaltyBonus · 01/11/2019 08:25

I don't think they're "obviously politically planted" at all. I think lots of ordinary people are taking an interest and feeling very conflicted on how to use their vote.

53rdWay · 01/11/2019 08:25

YABU about banning political posts but YANBU not liking the planted ones.

0blio · 01/11/2019 08:26

They have always been here. Just look at the brexit threads, most of which are started to stir up trouble and very few are genuine.

But we're not stupid and I don't think political posts should be banned Hmm

LoyaltyBonus · 01/11/2019 08:26

"Raise the standard of debate"? You mean only allow people with a full understanding and who agree with you to participate?

Preggosaurus9 · 01/11/2019 08:28

Who gets to decide what's crap though?

That's the problem with censorship

Dogsaresomucheasier · 01/11/2019 08:29

Brexit got (mostly) shuffled off to it’s own little corner. I feel that was a good thing for the site.

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 01/11/2019 08:30

Yes we should definitely ban posters from expressing political opinions that aren't up to your discursive standards... free speech is so overrated

Why don't we go the whole hog and ban the mass ignoramus from voting too?

TwiddleMuff · 01/11/2019 08:33

While we’re banning stuff can we forbid any more “how often do you wash your towel” posts?

MustardScreams · 01/11/2019 08:34

But Brexit is a different beast. You know you don’t actually have to click on political threads, it’s not a legal requirement of voting.

chomalungma · 01/11/2019 08:35

Why - this is a really important election for the future of our country that will affect everyone.

By hiding it away, people have to actively find it so it's much harder to engage with debate or make people aware of issues.

Other debates that are really important aren't hidden away.

JacquesHammer · 01/11/2019 08:35

Given you’re making a suggestion to MNHQ, you might have been more comfortable posting this in Site Stuff....

LadyCarolinePooterVonThigh · 01/11/2019 08:36

Oh twiddle if only we could!

reallyrandomwords · 01/11/2019 08:47

Or is this a planted post by someone with a vested interest in people not voting or not being educated on what their options are in how to vote?

Why does everything have to be a conspiracy? Normal people are allowed to have opinions....

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 01/11/2019 08:58

While we’re banning stuff can we forbid any more “how often do you wash your towel” posts?

God yes! Where do I need to sign to make that happen? Grin

YABU OP - I love political discussion. Bans and censorship of topics are not the way to go.
YANBU - yes, the bots are out already. We have had them before and MN are getting a bit better at spotting, deleting and banning certain users.

Dogsaresomucheasier · 01/11/2019 09:04

Normal people are absolutely allowed to have opinions and to debate. Perhaps it will improve once manifestos are published and there are policies to discuss, but at the moment the level seems to be in the gutter bitching about party leaders and it’s depressing and an insult to our collective intelligence!

Yes! And:
"Why are you on mumsnet if you're not a mum"
"Can I use a disabled toilet if..."

JuneFromBethesda · 01/11/2019 09:45

I share your frustration OP. All the wide-eyed faux naivety - ‘can anyone explain why ...’ ‘I just don’t understand ...’ It’s so transparent.

itsgettingweird · 01/11/2019 09:56

I actually don't care they are bots.

The most important thing to me is the discussion and seeing each policy and idea from various viewpoints.

As a fully functioning adult I'll make my own mind up in the end.

Plus it's fun to swap and change who'll you'll definitely vote or not vote for in different thread as it totally screw up their polls and serves the, right Wink

Dogsaresomucheasier · 01/11/2019 09:58

I do like your style itsgettingweird!

underneaththeash · 01/11/2019 09:59

Me too - it was ridiculous last time.

Maybe we just need an political debate/coercive underhand electioneering section.

SandraOhshair · 01/11/2019 10:00

Political censorship? Are you mad OP?
