To think I've been underpaid in first wage slip?

Maria53 · 30/10/2019 21:03

I just started a new job and have only worked 7 days.

I have been paid £583.31 and no tax has been deducted.

I was told my starting salary will be £23,000 per annum. I'm no mathematician but haven't I been significantly underpaid?

A colleague was meant to go over my contract with me this week but it has now been moved to next week. Should I raise this with my manager tomorrow?

No. You've been paid for seven days why do you think it's not right?

CRbear · 30/10/2019 21:05

23,000 divided by 52 is 442. So that plus 40% (two extra days?) = £530ish. I’d say you’ve been slightly overpaid if anything?

CatToddlerUprising · 30/10/2019 21:06

Try the salary calculator website- tends to give quite an accurate amount (you can add in pension, student loan repayments, tax code etc)

Asdf12345 · 30/10/2019 21:07

Seems about right to me. What were you expecting?

ThisYearHasGotToBeBetter · 30/10/2019 21:08

What was the pay period? Do you work 5 days a week?
Also was national insurance deducted?

Thehop · 30/10/2019 21:08

You’ve been overpaid a little.

Whatsername7 · 30/10/2019 21:08

I resign.com is a good website for working all of this stuff out

happytoday73 · 30/10/2019 21:09

National insurance? Minimum pension contribution?

Lockheart · 30/10/2019 21:10

Were you expecting a full month's wages for only working 7 days?

The tax will kick in once you start earning enough per month that HMRC thinks you'll be over your personal allowance. At £583 a month you wouldn't be, hence they haven't taxed you. This may mean you get slightly more tax taken off in future to correct the balance.

StarlingsInSummer · 30/10/2019 21:11

Were you expecting a full month’s salary?

Abibranning · 30/10/2019 21:11

Sounds about right and tax etc will be fixed in next month's pay

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 30/10/2019 21:11

Significantly under paid? How?!

QueenofPain · 30/10/2019 21:11

You’ve been overpaid. This is crude “back of a fag packet” maths but 52 x £583 = £30,316.

They’ve obviously just managed to put 7 days pay through for this months payroll and you’ll get your full pay next payday with appropriate deductions.

SoyDora · 30/10/2019 21:12

Looks like you’ve been slightly overpaid.

Justreadingtheforum · 30/10/2019 21:13

You should have been paid 619.23?

VladmirsPoutine · 30/10/2019 21:14

What were you expecting? By my calculations that seems about right. That's a work week plus 2 days.

userxx · 30/10/2019 21:14

How much national insurance was deducted?

KurriKawari · 30/10/2019 21:14

How much were you expecting on a salary of £23k and 7 days work?

HalfManHalfLabrador · 30/10/2019 21:14

How much were you expecting for a week? Confused

KurriKawari · 30/10/2019 21:16

I would say you were lucky they didn't deduct "emergency tax" as that seems to happen to me in new jobs.

lastqueenofscotland · 30/10/2019 21:16

Spot on
What were you expecting Confused

DonnaDarko · 30/10/2019 21:17

Well I'm on 25k and I get just under 1600 after tax, so that sounds about right to me.

Tax wouldn't be deducted as you're not over the threshold for tax. Considering you've only worked 7 days, you're lucky to have gotten paid at all!

Maria53 · 30/10/2019 21:18

Overpaid? Can someone explain please?

£583.31 ÷ 7 works out at 83.33 a day. Approx if we say I work 21 days average month x 83.33 = £1749.93.

Annual salary would be 20, 999.16

Maria53 · 30/10/2019 21:19

Also I have worked 2 10 hour shifts last couple of days and brain is fried....

Teachermaths · 30/10/2019 21:21

But that annual salary is probably abiut right because you will soon start paying tax.
