To think I've been underpaid in first wage slip?

Maria53 · 30/10/2019 21:03

I just started a new job and have only worked 7 days.

I have been paid £583.31 and no tax has been deducted.

I was told my starting salary will be £23,000 per annum. I'm no mathematician but haven't I been significantly underpaid?

A colleague was meant to go over my contract with me this week but it has now been moved to next week. Should I raise this with my manager tomorrow?

Day rate is annual salary divided by 260. That's because there are 260 working days in a year. So 23000 divided by 260 multiplied by the 7 days you worked gives £619.23. Did you have NI or pension deducted?

amy85 · 30/10/2019 21:23

Are you sure all 7 will be included in this pay....is there a cut off date?

Merryoldgoat · 30/10/2019 21:24

How many hours a week is your contract for and how many days a week do you work?

SoyDora · 30/10/2019 21:24

What was the pay period?

Musereader · 30/10/2019 21:24

23k/year is £1,916/month which is about £1,500 a month after tax and NI, you worked 1/4 so £500 sounds about right

amy85 · 30/10/2019 21:24

Was there any deductions eh pension?

BrieAndChilli · 30/10/2019 21:25

Does you payslip have how many hours or how many days you have been paid on it? It could be that only 5 or 6 of the 7 days you worked were in the correct time period to be paid this month?
Can you take a photo of younpayslip blacking out any personal details so people can see the tax code and exact amounts etc??

topcat2014 · 30/10/2019 21:25

What day did you start and what day was pay day? Sounds about right though

amy85 · 30/10/2019 21:25

Eh pension was supposed to be eg pension

TryingToBeBold · 30/10/2019 21:25

You're lucky you got paid anything! My company cut off is 2 weeks before pay day and DP is a week before.

NearlyGranny · 30/10/2019 21:28

Make sure you have a tax code for payroll, otherwise you'll go straight on an emergency code and have to claim it back later.

Dave234234 · 30/10/2019 21:28

£23000/52.14 weeks =£441
£441 /5 days = £88.22
£88.22 * 7 = £617.56
Have you made any pension contributions?

Maria53 · 30/10/2019 21:29

I work 37 hours a week.

Sorry I've been underpaid a couple of times before in previous jobs and am a bit on edge about it. I had no pension or NI deducted at all.

Zebraaa · 30/10/2019 21:30

You mentioned “if I work an average 21 days per month” so then £23k will be pro rata...

Zebraaa · 30/10/2019 21:30

Sorry ignore that.

BritInUS1 · 30/10/2019 21:31

£23000 / 260 working days in a year x 7 = £619.23 should be your gross pay - BTW I work in payroll

TriciaH87 · 30/10/2019 21:32

500 a week is 26k a year so I think it's correct as you have done 2 extra days. I work it out at 619 but you surely paid national insurance and possibly pension contribution out of the difference.

BarbaraofSeville · 30/10/2019 21:33

My employer's cut off is on about the 4th of the month. Most people start on the first of the month, because dealing with part months is too complicated for payroll Hmm.

What does your payslip say, it should indicate what period the money relates to and if there has been any deductions. These things are usually far easier to work out by looking at the original documents rather than going on extracts posted with no context.

You think you've been underpaid. How much do you think you should have received and how have you worked it out?

ContadoraExplorer · 30/10/2019 21:34

If it was our payroll I would have calculated it at £23k/260 working days x 7 days worked = £619.23 gross pay this month

SoyDora · 30/10/2019 21:35

The pay period/cut off date will be key here. In my last job the pay cut off was the 15th and I got paid on the 20th.

Maria53 · 30/10/2019 21:38

RE cut off I just started on October 23rd

OP posts:
Hamandcheesebaguette · 30/10/2019 21:42

Looks about right to me.

I earn 25k per year, worked 6 days and got paid £640 - also no tax deducted this month for some reason

SoyDora · 30/10/2019 21:42

Yes, so what was their payroll cut off date? So you started on the 23rd, paid on the 30th, but payroll cut off date may have been the 28th, for example (to give them time to do their calculations), meaning you were paid for 5 days.

Merryoldgoat · 30/10/2019 21:44

No one can help you without seeing your payslip as if you don’t understand the calculations, you might not know what you’re looking at.

We need to know tax code, tax to date and NI.

If you’re willing to share an anonymised payslip I’m sure someone can assist.

slashlover · 30/10/2019 21:44

Does your payslip list the number of hours you were paid for or the number of days?
