AIBU to be ashamed that I cannot peel butternut squash?

What is it with the squash? It is called for in many a recipe, and quite delicious too, but getting under that crinkly, tough skin is impossible without nearly losing a finger or an eye.

Any stories of how you overcame your own peeling deficiencies greatly received.

Oxo your good grip (I think that's the name) peeler works well for me. The squash does get really slippery though which doesn't help.

maccaroni · 30/10/2019 17:39

I roast it in big chunks in the oven with skin on then peel it off after

mbosnz · 30/10/2019 17:39

I cut off the slice and then just peel round it.

My problem is that I'm allergic to raw potatoes, it makes my hands red raw and itchy! And nobody believes me, they've always assumed it's just me trying to get out of peeling potatoes. . .rude!

OliviaBenson · 30/10/2019 17:40

I solved it by buying the pre-chopped frozen stuff....

ShirleyPhallus · 30/10/2019 17:41

I don’t ever peel the skin, I roast it with and it’s delicious

What nonsense is this to peel a squash?!

SpoonBlender · 30/10/2019 17:41

A large, sharp kitchen knife. 8" or 10". You need the leverage. Don't worry about being all perfect and efficient and keeping 100% of the flesh.

Tasty, tasty flesh...

Aposterhasnoname · 30/10/2019 17:42

Two minutes in the microwave before peeling.

jamoncrumpets · 30/10/2019 17:42

Don't peel it. Just cut in in half, roast it and scoop out the innards

RubbingHimSourly · 30/10/2019 17:43

Just use a potato peeler. It's dead easy..........pain in the arse to chop tho

isseywith4vampirecats · 30/10/2019 17:43

i cut it into thick slices and then using a knife i cut down through the skin peeling it is hard work

Camomila · 30/10/2019 17:45

I've got hypermobility and dyspraxia. I struggle chopping a sweet potato Grin Blush

Fifthtimelucky · 30/10/2019 17:45

I have a good peeler that gets through squash skin with no problem, but now always cut in half lengthways, scoop out seeds, 'paint' with olive oil and roast in its skin. The skin, as well as the flesh, is delicious.

I would never use a big knife as a PP suggested. Much too dangerous!

BeeFarseer · 30/10/2019 17:47

I whittle at it with a knife rather than trying to peel it properly.

GruciusMalfoy · 30/10/2019 17:47

@mbosnz I believe you! I get the same thing with pineapple, it really stings.

Another one here who roasts and then peels the skin on a squash. Much easier.

ShirleyPhallus · 30/10/2019 17:51

@mbosnz I have the same thing! Potato water makes my hands swell and itch

Nectarines do the same to my lips, even if they’ve been washed really well

Crotchgoblins · 30/10/2019 17:58

Don't feel ashamed at your butternut squash secret!

They are a faff to peel. I've started roasting in half with skins on ( seeds removed and brushed with olive oil). When they are roasted you can scoop out the flesh with a spoon like scooping ice cream out of a tub. It is one of the most satisfying things ever!

whitesockss · 30/10/2019 18:00

Stab with a fork and microwave for 2 minutes before peeling

Wheat2Harvest · 30/10/2019 18:04

I never peel it. I roast it and take the skin off afterwards.

Holdmydrink · 30/10/2019 18:06

If you want mashed butternut, put it in the own whole for about an hour, then cut it in half lengthways and scoop out.
If you want chunks, top and tail the butternut & cut in half lengthways, then lay flat while you peel.

slipperywhensparticus · 30/10/2019 18:06

Yup microwave it and a really good peeler....

Ithinkwerealonenowtiffany · 30/10/2019 18:06

@mbosnz the starch in potatoes aggravate my eczema. I peel them using gloves.

Easy to peel a squash using a proper peeler

Holdmydrink · 30/10/2019 18:07

*oven

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 30/10/2019 18:08

Roast it whole.

DarlingNikita · 30/10/2019 18:09

Are you sure it's butternut? I don't recognise the 'crinkly, tough skin' description at all. IME butternut skin is smooth and quite thin. A bog-standard vegetable peeler does the job.
