AIBU to be ashamed that I cannot peel butternut squash?

What is it with the squash? It is called for in many a recipe, and quite delicious too, but getting under that crinkly, tough skin is impossible without nearly losing a finger or an eye.

Any stories of how you overcame your own peeling deficiencies greatly received.

I can’t believe how few people eat the skin? It’s delicious!

Cordial11 · 30/10/2019 19:43

I use a potato peeler Smile

Theresnobslikeshowbs · 30/10/2019 19:44

Squash, pumpkin, swede etc- a couple of minutes in the microwave and you can peel with a butter knife it is that easy!!

MarshaBradyo · 30/10/2019 19:46

I just cut it off, I’d find it hard going with a peeler although I haven’t actually tried. Although we eat a lot of butternut squash so have taken to buying pre-chopped via Ocado.

Roast it with olive oil so it starts to go crisp, so nice.

Titan peeler whizzes through the skin as if it's paper.
It peels as you push and pull, so does it in half the time too.

AliceLittle · 30/10/2019 20:51

Squash skin isn't crinkley.

Use a knife not a peeler

Zippyzoppy · 30/10/2019 21:17

Lots of top advice here - seemingly I'v gone a lifetime without eating the skin! If only I'd known.

YANBU they are horrendous. Pierce it several times and microwave it for about 5 minutes.

Mbozns, raw pumpkin makes my hands swell and go red. It's not severe so I've just put up with it tonight to carve some with the DC but people are Hmm if it gets mentioned.

Sorry, I spelled your username wrong 😫

You can eat the skin???
I love butternut squash, but I’ve always struggled with peeling them. I genuinely didn’t know the skin is edible!

HomeEdRocks18 · 30/10/2019 22:25

I buy it frozen instead

DarlingNikita · 31/10/2019 10:47

Butternut is the one shaped like an overlarge peanut, isn't it?
I think it's more accurate to say they're… suggestively shaped Grin

CatsOnCatnip · 31/10/2019 11:57

Roastings good, you can just scoop it out. Otherwise I half it, so you have a top and bottom and chop the two half’s in half again, this size is more manageable, then use my trusty potato peeler. The kind with the rotating blade, not the sharp pointed kind.

isthismylifenow · 31/10/2019 12:01

Are you sure it's butternut? I don't recognise the 'crinkly, tough skin' description at all. IME butternut skin is smooth and quite thin. A bog-standard vegetable peeler does the job

I am thinking the same as Nikita.

That description would sound like a hubbard squash to me. Now that is a faff to peel.

LellyMcKelly · 31/10/2019 12:07

I just chop it into big chunks and then take the skin off with a knife, or roast it in chunks and scoop out the flesh. Ididn’t even realise peeling it was a thing.
