To not have curtains? (Picture)

I have a lovely flat with a big bay window. LL had blue Ikea things that looked like shower curtains up, which I replaced with less offensive voiles just to dress the window a little.

Now that its colder, am I losing a fuck-tonne of heat by not having proper curtains? Also, I hate the look of short curtains but long ones would cover the radiator.

I also feel like decent, lined curtains will cost a small fortune for the size of the window. Have attached a picture, I think it looks ok without proper curtains.

It's scary how much heat is lost through window. Ebay has a huge range of curtains. Look for something interlined. This is a layer for wool sewn between fabric and lining and is the best ever for reducing drafts and keeping rooms warm. I make curtains for a living so I know what a difference it makes. The bargains on ebay are amazing for handmade curtains

I think thick lined curtains because you will feel so cold otherwise, or massive heating bill. Try Facebook marketplace. Lots of curtains there in good condition.

How can there be something controversial enough to be deleted on a thread about curtains? Confused

I dont get it, you have blinds. Whats the issue?

KeepYourCup · 02/11/2019 22:01

There isn't an issue, I just wondered if I was better to spend a bit more money putting curtains up; if they would make a significant difference to heat loss in the winter, and if others thought it looked a bit bare without any.

It's a fairly straighforward post, what bit is it you don't get?

I'm the same at the moment OP. Just moved into a lovely new build rental. The problem is there are no curtain rails or poles, except for the rear patio door. There are venetian blinds in every room. DH doesn't want to be putting curtains up. But I just think the house looks so plain and unhomely without curtains. Everythng in every room is neutral white and gray. Curtains are an easy way to add personality and colour to the place without having to paint. I'll see how it goes over the winter. So far the house is lovely and cosy.

There are cheap curtains out there. B&M, The Range, Home Bargain, Asda and Tesco all have reasonably priced ranges (if somewhat limited). Dunelm are the best for pencil pleat, but not the cheapest. I've just spent £65 on ones for my patio doors. Angry

Have you thought about using blankets as curtains? The tartan-y kind. Not too expensive and keep the heat in/cold out. Sounds odd but looks good.

Rosehip345 · 02/11/2019 22:23

I made ours with blackout and thermal lining. Well worth it for the heat difference

SmudgeButt · 02/11/2019 22:36

Curtains are for shy people. Or ones who have really nosey neighbours....

I hate curtains. We've moved a while back and I took all the curtains down that I could. Fortunately for me our bedroom has velux windows in the slanted ceiling so no one can see in. I love to be able to look up from the bed and see the trees and birds and stars and moon.. I don't care about the heat loss (sorry environment)

granadagirl · 02/11/2019 22:50

Lovely room, if you want curtains have a look on eBay
I got a fantastic buy on there, pitch pleat lined John Lewis curtains £90

peachgreen · 02/11/2019 22:59

Curtains for a bay window are a pain. We went for 4 to avoid the need for a bay rail which is really expensive.

maggiecate · 02/11/2019 23:06

Adding to the oooh very nice chorus! If you’re up for making them you can get decent curtain fabrics/lining etc on eBay - end rolls/slight seconds etc. I’ve been in a similar style (Edinburgh/Glasgow????) and they do get draughty. As well as your window a curtain on the back of the main door (or sitting room) might be worth trying, saves cold air coming in from the stair. If there’s nowhere to hang it an old fashioned draught excluder makes a big difference.

Sh05 · 02/11/2019 23:12

Try Amazon for reasonably priced curtains. They will definitely keep the heat from escaping although your room does look very cosy just as it is.

Alez · 02/11/2019 23:15

We have blinds like that. I like it, nice and simple and modern. I don't think it makes much difference with the heat if you've got decent windows, though by all means get curtains if you like the way they look.

WhereYouLeftIt · 02/11/2019 23:53

^"Now that its colder, am I losing a fuck-tonne of heat by not having proper curtains? "
Almost certainly. Especially if they're single-glazed.

I've bought some good thick curtains off of eBay over the years, search for 'interlined curtains'. There's all manner of sizes and colours being sold, second hand and new - obviously the second-hand are cheaper. With luck there'll be something there you'll like and will do the job.
