To not have curtains? (Picture)

I have a lovely flat with a big bay window. LL had blue Ikea things that looked like shower curtains up, which I replaced with less offensive voiles just to dress the window a little.

Now that its colder, am I losing a fuck-tonne of heat by not having proper curtains? Also, I hate the look of short curtains but long ones would cover the radiator.

I also feel like decent, lined curtains will cost a small fortune for the size of the window. Have attached a picture, I think it looks ok without proper curtains.

Lovely room!

Frouby · 30/10/2019 18:47

Have a look on the next sale, they sometimes have some really good reductions on daft sizes. In fact anywhere really. Because it's a big bay you could get 2 pair of long but narrow ones and either stitch them together on your machine, or just have 2 pair up. I did that in our old house with a similar bay because it was rented.

fuzzymoon · 30/10/2019 18:51

I got some beautiful thick lined curtains in the returns / clearance shelf in John Lewis. I had them years. Its worth having a look in places like that.

However your sitting room looks lovely as it is.

StCharlotte · 30/10/2019 18:55

Really lovely and inviting looking room but the curtains look too lightweight (says she who has no curtains at all at the French windows Grin). Dunelm do very affordable ones.

PumpityPumpPump · 30/10/2019 19:01

What a gorgeous house! Room envy!

ISmellBabies · 30/10/2019 19:04

What a lovely, cosy (and tidy!) lounge. I just want to snuggle up on that sofa. I have nothing useful to add about curtains, I just wanted to say how great it looks!

Honeyroar · 30/10/2019 19:07

It looks lovely as I is, but if you're losing heat curtains would help. You could do what a lot of hotels do - have long fake curtains either side, then short curtains that slide from blind them to cover the window but not the radiator (when the curtains are open you don't see the short curtains..

KeepYourCup · 30/10/2019 19:09

Thanks Pumpity I really love it here. We've only been in a few months but got very lucky we found the place at the right time. Landlord looks after it well.

I'll have a gander on the clearance bits, I assumed I wouldn't find much there because of the size. The voiles are totally useless other than making it look less bare.

Babies The sofa is the best thing about it, it was a freebie from Gumtree believe it or not!

I managed to find these in Argos for dd's room. They’ve helped massively with the cold breeze we get in her room. They’re also blackout. Would something like this work?

Funguy · 30/10/2019 19:18

God I'd want curtains... looks very Rear Window in there.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 30/10/2019 19:31

I bought my curtains from the Asda. They’re surprisingly lovely and were cheaper than Dunelm/Next etc.

handbagsatdawn33 · 30/10/2019 19:35

Dunelm & Ikea are good places to look for reasonably priced curtains.

billy1966 · 30/10/2019 19:35

OP, curtains make a huge difference to heat loss.

If you are handy with a sewing machine you could pick up an inexpensive pair of curtains and add a heavy blanket/ fleece to add weight and insulation.

crimsonlake · 30/10/2019 20:00

I always think a window is not properly dressed unless it has curtains, but yes they can be expensive and even dearer to make.
My radiator is under my window and I have floor length curtains, when I draw them at night I rest them on the window ledge. Not the best look, but but it is a solution.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 30/10/2019 20:07

I draw curtains over a radiator. I figure the main thing is to heat the cold air from the window.

Just out of interest our house is modern with solid double glazing but all the roman blinds and curtains are lined and interlined and it does make a huge difference to heat loss. It's very efficient insulation to cover those cold surfaces and you can really tell the difference when you either open the curtains or pull up the blinds.

Lovely room OP.

KeepYourCup · 30/10/2019 20:44

Thankyou all so much for the nice comments about my room. It might seem silly to some but I've spent years being pretty skint and not having much to spend on making a place feel like home. I'm in my 30s and this is the first time I've lived somewhere I'm really proud of Smile.

I never thought of somewhere like Asda for curtains, I think finding cheap ready made ones and adding extra lining might be a good idea.

I dont mind the look of it with just the voiles as a sort of frame but I don't want the place to be freezing! Also finding the choice a bit limited for pencil pleat but don't want to spend a fortune replacing the track with a pole when it might be useless if I have to move on.

OP posts:
KeepYourCup · 30/10/2019 20:46

Enrique that's a good suggestion, the windowsil is quite wide so I could easily fold the middle section up when the curtains are drawn. It seems obvious now you've pointed it out!

Hiya! I also agree that curtains do make a window not bare. In our living room, the curtains on the radiator window only get drawn when the radiator isn't on. I love these curtains we got from B&M. We normally spend about £20ish on curtains and these were expensive for us (£40 something). They look so glam as they're sparkly/glittery and velvety-feel. They're so worth the money, I feel very posh with them up 😊

Do u mind me asking if u are living in Glasgow? The brickwork opposite looks like Glasgow buildings 😊 I'm from Durham but have stayed in Glasgow a few times, once in a flat like that. I just love them buildings, I love the stone-work (if that's a word) ♥️

UnreasonableMerin · 31/10/2019 22:15

Look at dunelm. They have a great range of curtains that are reasonably priced. Wait till black Friday they might have a promo on. Even 20% off is better than nothing.

Just don't get the black out ones.
I found the part the faces out, gets really discoloured from the light.

AccidentalMom · 01/11/2019 10:08

Omg get the curtains they have made such a different to ours. I just got these for the kids bedroom and they're fab
Deconovo Super Soft Pair of... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0152GA8F8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share&tag=mumsnetforu03-21
Not too expensive and I honestly didn't think they were gonna be anything but they're perfect. Also we have the ikea ones for the living room because they're much longer and they work great too.
It's know it's annoying spending so much on making a rental homely but at least with curtains you can always take them with you.

Xx

Hecateh · 01/11/2019 10:37

You could make some gorgeous Roman Blinds with less material than curtains and they won't clutter the room when up.

GrotbagsBetterLookingSister · 01/11/2019 11:18

You're worried about curtains blocking the heat from the radiator yet you have a massive wooden box in front of it? Confused

We have blackout curtains in all of our windows and they're not heavy and aren't lined. They weren't expensive but they're very good at blocking out the light/keeping the heat in.

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 01/11/2019 14:08

Just another voice to add to what a lovely home you have OP...

Snuffkindle · 01/11/2019 14:20

If you want curtains, it's always worth having a look on ebay. I have got two lovely thick lined pairs off there second hand.
