For me, it's Tescos.

Simple reason - I was on my way home from work last winter (office job, so well dressed) and popped into local large Tesco to pick up something. Was innocently wandering around when I got a tap on the shoulder - it appeared to be a staff member (so having my headphones in) didn't hear what he said, so just replied, 'No, I'm fine thanks'. He taps again and I took headphones out and he said 'We have a NO HOODS POLICY in the store'. I took my hood down but was secretly seething - FFS, it was sub zero outside and I'd just come inside.

So I'll do everything I can to avoid Tescos.

Any others?

B&Q. It's always so cold, and unspeakably boring. Plus you can never find any staff to help you find the boring thing you're looking for. See also Halfords and Decathlon. These are shops my DP likes and always seems to need things from, but I hate them all!

I agree that Lush stinks.

ChongADong · 30/10/2019 21:23

Lush. I'm a copper and shopped there loads before that awful campaign they did a few years ago. I don't know any other officers who shop there after that.

whiteroseredrose · 30/10/2019 21:42

*Also cafe Nero for refusing to use milk from inside badger cull zones and having petitions on their counters against the badger culls

I've never been in Cafe Nero in my life but I'll be making a point of going now.*

Me too! Not been in for ages but I'll make the point of going now.

I avoid anything Arcadia because of Philip Green. (Previously avoided Top Shop and Chanel cos I hate Kate Moss).
Lush as it brings on asthma. No no to being pro mermaids too.
Primark because the fabrics give me electric shocks (and don't like the styles).

Nowadays House of Fraser ever since they stopped letting you return online items to store even after a click and collect.

But I love TK Maxx, and John Lewis. I've had great customer service in both. Similarly Amazon customer service is fantastic.

Roughday · 30/10/2019 21:51

Starbucks ... purely because they refuse to sell Poppy’s

Ilovelala · 30/10/2019 21:52

Harvey's the sofa place because he loudly told my partner infront of everyone the sofa was poorly made and his weight would ruin the sofa within a year or so. You know when someone's enjoying humiliating a person, that smirk they have on their face and faces they pull at their colleagues/friends "discreetly". When I challenged him he shouted for everyone to hear ' I'm only trying to do you a favour darling' showing off. My partner is 6ft4 muscle type 16 stone and facts are facts but not sure I've ever heard of your BMI being calculated before buying a sofa, if he had said this politely without trying to humiliate him we would have had a laugh about it and picked another sofa but his attitude was entirely the problem. To add to that his colleague did a poo in the toilet next to the desk we were sitting at and made us sit in the stench.

babypossum · 30/10/2019 21:55

Pret. More often than not when I went to the till, the charge was more than on the shelf label. Their reasoning was always that the staff hasn't updated the display prices. In the end I got fed up and haven't bought anything from there in 9 years.

Ilovechocolate01 · 30/10/2019 21:57

Not a shop but a car dealership - Volkswagen. Got a quote for a new car and they told me to phone later on to make another appointment after I had spoken to my husband. About buying a car with my money Hmm. Fuck the fuck off back to the 1950s. I didn't go back

gamerchick · 30/10/2019 22:10

Man, I don't think I'll ever try lush Grin

I do love b&q and cex though.

Debenhams for me. Had quite an enjoyable time getting some bits for Christmas presents and had the most stressful experience at the till over the store card thing, ending with a huffy lass stroppely taking off the discounts I didn't ask for.

Came out a gibbering wreck. I involuntary speed up a bit when passing now.

Brigante9 · 30/10/2019 22:36

Lush.
Funders of countryside terrorism and hatred for British police.
Also they’re products are shit.

Yes, yes and yes.

My Dh doesn’t like Asda due to the feral nature of the clientele. He once had to duck in the vegetable aisle to avoid someone he’d arrested.Confused

HundredMilesAnHour · 30/10/2019 22:44

Primark. I've never set foot in one and I never will.

Their business model is based on creating huge amounts of short-lived, poorly-made fast fashion products which inherently contradicts the values of ethical fashion and spells nothing but bad news for the environment, workers and animals. I won't have anything to do with them, or brands using a similar business model.

RoseMartha · 30/10/2019 22:55

Any shop where I can not afford items in, which is most of them. Unless they have a sale then I might have a browse.

Ragwort · 30/10/2019 23:00

Loads Grin certainly avoid Amazon & Starbucks for tax reasons.

I live in a small town with lots of independent shops ... most of which offer shocking customer service (I work in retail myself and am somewhat obsessed with customer service) ... and yet we are all encouraged to 'buy local' ... my pet hate is shops that put up a sign 'back in 5 minutes' (5 minutes from when Confused) or randomly opening late/closing early.

Don't like Aldi or Lidl much, would prefer to pay more for a better shopping experience.

alltoomuchrightnow · 30/10/2019 23:01

Starbucks.. I don't drink hot drinks anyway but I hate the whole culture of them and what they stand for

WH Smith I loved as a kid in the 70s and 80s but now find them astonishingly grotty. Only use them at airports where there's no choice and never on high street. Also hate the till upselling.

Ann Summers - a sea of scratchy flammable nylon.

TK Maxx as was working for them two years ago... horrible bullying culture, at least at my branch. Wouldn't allow me a bottle of water even though I have a medical condition. Said health and safety wouldn't allow it (despite the fact they sell... by the tills.. bottles of water and other drinks!)

Victoria's Secret because I'm not 16 and there's nothing in there going to fit my G cups

alltoomuchrightnow · 30/10/2019 23:03

Bon Marche as it looks so depressing, frumpy and old fashioned. I can't think of any demographic that would want to shop there.. there are far nicer clothing stores for all ages

Iusedtobeskinny · 30/10/2019 23:05

I am another one who will make more of an effort to support cafe Nero now too.

alltoomuchrightnow · 30/10/2019 23:05

Fat Face and White Stuff.. twee and ugly clothes, also having a round --bloated from thyroid problems- face I made a vow I'd never enter Fat Face ;)

user764329056 · 30/10/2019 23:05

I refuse to use Amazon for many reasons

alltoomuchrightnow · 30/10/2019 23:08

Why wouldn't people support Cafe Nero on the anti badger culls??

clopper · 30/10/2019 23:10

Lush and body shop due to pushy sales assistants. I wonder if they will read these comments and wise up? Probably not. TK maxx I hate but love their home sense stores which are also a bit muddly. B and M so full of plastic pointless stuff. Primark so crowded and too much stock, although the tills are usually quick.

ViewsAreMine · 30/10/2019 23:13

TK Maxx. My blood pressure goes up as soon as I go in. I feel like I'm walking into the messiest bedroom ever. Don't get the hype at all!!

nevergotthehangofthursdays · 30/10/2019 23:14

Trespass are about to be on my list after discovering my new waterproof jacket has non-waterproof seams. And that this is part of the design bll. Why would you do that?!

Dog, I'm pretty sure Trespass are breaking both the Trade Descriptions Act and the Sale of Goods Act by doing this. Goods have to be as described, i.e. 'waterproof' should be waterproof, not letting water in at the seams, and they also have to be of sufficient quality. Perhaps you should drop Trading Standards a line.

Blueshadow · 30/10/2019 23:20

Primark are no worse than many other high street fast fashion shops. They’re cheaper because they run a different business model (no advertising, high turnover), not because they are more unethical.

sam221 · 30/10/2019 23:21

United Colours of Benetton- there was a factory fire a few years in a South Asian country, the workers had been locked in-I think if I remember correctly the then CEO made some whip about at least they were providing jobs. I have not shopped there since.

Cherrysoup · 30/10/2019 23:28

I've never been in Cafe Nero in my life but I'll be making a point of going now.

Mature of you.

Why shouldn't people take a stance against these barbaric culls?

Because what you’re doing by using Caffè Nero is boycotting the poor bloody farmers who didn’t choose to have badger culls on their land. Surely you realise that they don’t decide this? With the price of milk being a total disgrace, this is not helping.

BadSun · 30/10/2019 23:31

Their business model is based on creating huge amounts of short-lived, poorly-made fast fashion products which inherently contradicts the values of ethical fashion and spells nothing but bad news for the environment, workers and animals

I mean... that's most high street clothing stores isn't it? They all follow seasons and trends to encourage you to buy new clothes multiple times per year, don't they?
