to ask if there's any shop you avoid for a particular reason?

For me, it's Tescos.

Simple reason - I was on my way home from work last winter (office job, so well dressed) and popped into local large Tesco to pick up something. Was innocently wandering around when I got a tap on the shoulder - it appeared to be a staff member (so having my headphones in) didn't hear what he said, so just replied, 'No, I'm fine thanks'. He taps again and I took headphones out and he said 'We have a NO HOODS POLICY in the store'. I took my hood down but was secretly seething - FFS, it was sub zero outside and I'd just come inside.

So I'll do everything I can to avoid Tescos.

Any others?

@Fastandfree did not know that about Caffè Nero. They’re now added to my blacklist.

escapade1234 · 30/10/2019 17:39

Jigsaw. Deathly quiet and the assistants actively stop what they’re doing and follow you round the shop, just watching. It’s horrible. I want to browse but always end up leaving quickly.

Pinkblueberry · 30/10/2019 17:39

I like lush products and get them given to me as gifts for birthdays and Christmas - but I avoid going in the shop. There’s friendly costumer service and then there’s just ‘friendly’ harassment...

Yurtle · 30/10/2019 17:59

Lush because the staff are unbearable. Made the mistake of going in to buy something to cheer myself up when I had a miscarriage. The blue haired haired assistant only left me alone after some hilarious banter about my mood. Cheers love.

CEX has the monopoly on sticky carpets and dodgy staff! My ds2 loves that shop.. maybe it's more of a teenager / young adult place than for 54 year olds!

Carpets? I don't remember seeing a carpet in a CEX.

My kids have to drag me out of CEX - I'm 60. last time I was in Glasgow I went int one and bought about 30 DVDs to add to the stupidly huge pile of crap I fully intend to watch some day.

The staff in the Inverness one are brilliant. I bought a game from CEX's online store which was faulty and, stupidly, thought I could return it to a physical shop. After sympathising with me and explaining that I couldn't the manager spent a good half hour getting the thing working - then remembered me the next time I went in a couple of months later.

Why at least one of their female staff members always has to have their hair dyed blue is a mystery though.

puppy23 · 30/10/2019 19:00

Topshop - Philip Green.

Also a couple of Sainsburys. One that I used to work in, because some of the staff are so incredibly bitchy. Its a shame because there were also some lovely people working there I'd love to bump into again, but its not worth the glares and whispers. The second is a sainsburys local near me, its just grotty and all the lights seem to flicker.

The80sweregreat · 30/10/2019 20:19

I think I just associate CEX with loud music and young people!
I'm sure the employees work incredibly hard though ; retail isn't easy!

colinthecaterpillars · 30/10/2019 20:25

Agree with to Maxx it feels like a jumble sale and I can't cope with being in the shop, the Times I've looked I didn't see anything of a bargain

PigeonPieForMe · 30/10/2019 20:28

Also cafe Nero for refusing to use milk from inside badger cull zones and having petitions on their counters against the badger culls

I've never been in Cafe Nero in my life but I'll be making a point of going now.

PigeonPieForMe · 30/10/2019 20:29

Why shouldn't people take a stance against these barbaric culls?

flirtygirl · 30/10/2019 20:32

I Boycott alot of places. Most mentioned here already.

I also Boycott nestle, Monsanto and israeli made/owned products including m&s. No not anti semitic, Google Boycott isreal, it's a political Boycott due to overreach of state power and Palestine.

I don't Boycott Primark as their clothes welfare programmes are better than some other brands like Arcadia group, Zara, Boohoo etc. All info available online.

I probably should Boycott Mcdonalds but my 10 year would never talk to me again.

Some on here that I didn't know about, like cafe Nero but luckily I'm too cheap to pay for coffee when out, so I dont buy coffee at any cafe. I do use my family card and get a free one in ikea though.

flirtygirl · 30/10/2019 20:35

It's the only small limited bit of power we all have, where to spend our limited pounds.

Whathappenedtothelego · 30/10/2019 20:36

So many, but ones that immediately spring to mind are The Entertainer - cluttered, overpriced, stressful, full of plastic tat.
Starbucks - where to start? Overpriced, mediocre coffee, frankly disgusting food, dingy and depressing environment.
Sports Direct - hate the owner and everything he stands for (Wetherspoons ditto).

HopeIsNotAStrategy · 30/10/2019 20:37

FCUK.

dementedma · 30/10/2019 20:37

TK Maxx. Glorified jumble sale

Iamboudicca · 30/10/2019 20:39

Top shop - I once asked an assistant if they had something in a size 14. She looked at me in disgust and told me “Evans is next door!”

Never been back in

lljkk · 30/10/2019 20:49

where we used to live, I struggled to set foot in Wilkinsons (?Wilcos)? The variety store, anyway. Their entrance was a disinfectant + soap aisle; the stink made my eyes sting.

Nowadays: I hope to never set foot in Wetherspoons (politics).

Our local health food shop... one of the staff was ranting against plans to put up wind turbine in our area. Just one problem: we were investors in this community project. I heard about her rant from others in the Green Party. I wonder who she thought her customers were. The shop had been around for years but went out of business about 9m later.

Am relieved to see others describe TKMaxx as overpriced jumble sale(!)

user1552403235 · 30/10/2019 20:49

For me it's Sainsbury's. They always watch and follow customers around as if they are potential thieves.! I wouldn't darken their doors. Tesco and Asda are totally trusting and relaxing.

pearpicking84 · 30/10/2019 20:57

I didn’t shop in Topshop for years after a shop assistant elbowed be out of the way while I was looking at handbags a a student.

ItsMs · 30/10/2019 21:01

@AlbusSeverusMalfoy

That's HollisterGrin

Blueshadow · 30/10/2019 21:08

Boots. I can never find anything I want - I’ll go in for something simple, like toothpaste, or tissues and find they’ve changed the layout again and they are nowhere to be seen.

ReggaetonLente · 30/10/2019 21:11

Yes, i never go to primark. My nerves can't take it.

And i boycott Topshop as they ripped off a mate of mine's jewellery designs

TheRealShatParp · 30/10/2019 21:12

Brighthouse, or similar shops that target low income families, tempting them to spend beyond their means and be forever in debt.

Whatjusthappenedthere · 30/10/2019 21:14

A super posh bread shop in the town I work. The shopping experience should all be part of it when spending £1. 10 on a single English muffin I kid you not.
There is a sign asking customers to wait to be served and not help themselves to the bread from the shelves.
Rude man walks right past me and plonks his loaf down and asks for it to be sliced. Assistant serves him. I was stood right in front of her waiting my turn.
Stick your posh muffins up your bum from now on as far as I’m concerned I don’t miss them at all

Parsimon · 30/10/2019 21:16

WH Smith. It’s just grotty. Every single shop. Every single display. And they can’t stop themselves making everything look like cheap shite by piling up stuff with gaudy stickers on next to the checkout. No I fucking don’t want a chocolate orange for £1.50, or five different vouchers for fast food outlets with my receipt.
