To ask if you ‘tip’ your postie/bin men etc at Christmas?

Just wondering if people do this and if so, what do you do? Cash in a card? Box of mince pies/chocolate?

My parents are in their 60s and I remember they always used to leave cash in a card for the postie/bin men when we were kids but I don’t know if people do this now?

I’ve never done it as where we used to live we always had loads of different posties so never gave anything, but in our new house we have just the one regular and he’s really nice and friendly, always has a chat and always makes a fuss of the dog, was considerate when DD was born and left the parcels inside the gate rather than ringing the bell etc

I’d like to give him something, just not sure what the done thing is now days? Thoughts?

We give a tub / tin of chocs to our lovely bin / recycling men - my kids used to love watching out for them when they were tiny and now wave to them on the way to school. It’s a job I wouldn’t care to do and ours are fab!! I always figure if the crews change or whatever then they can sling the tub in the staff room and everyone can tuck in 🙂 although last year they all sat at the end of the road making sure they got the best ones 😁 —just as I would do!—

WagtailRobin · 29/10/2019 16:08

My mum gives the postman a card with £20 in it.

Winsomelosesome · 29/10/2019 16:19

No I'm rarely home when the binmen/postie comes so I wouldn't even know who they are. I do tip the bin washer guys though. Bunch of young guys who set up their own bin washing business a couple of years ago. They look like the sort of guys you'd avoid in the street but they do a great job and they're super polite, very enterprising too I think, plus they give me a Christmas card every year, I remember the first year it took me ages to work out who the "binwashers" were, I thought it was an Arabic name like binladenGrin.

steff13 · 29/10/2019 16:21

I give my mail carrier a $20 giftcard to a local restaurant. I don't tip the garbage men, mostly because I don't know how to do that. Would I put it on the garbage can? That seems gross.

Wexone · 29/10/2019 16:25

I give the postman a bottle of wine, he alwsys pusts my paracles in a dry place, looks after my post when away, goes above and beyond his duties. Give the bin men a large box of sweets as its an awful job. Do the same with my regular hairdresser and laudrette coming up to xmas. I know you will have people saing sure its their job they get paid but they are very appreciative of it and its a nice thing to do. My father was a bin man when i was younger (Many years ago) and he awlys remebered the people who tipped them. He would still do his job with the ones that diddn't tp, but would go above and beyond for the ones that did tip

nowayhose · 29/10/2019 16:26

I give a big tin of sweets to binmen (used to be a crate of beer years age) and the postie and cash for the paperboy.
I leave sweets on top of bin with a note if I'm going to be out but I manage to catch the postie and paperboy in person.

Didntwanttochangemyname · 29/10/2019 16:27

Postie £20 cash in a Christmas card, but I chat to her most days. Bin men get a box of celebrations left on the bin lid with a card.

cushioncovers · 29/10/2019 16:29

Nope. I don't know them, I rarely see them. They are just doing their job. Same as I do mine. Why would you tip them. 🤷🏻‍♀️

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 29/10/2019 16:40

My postman gets a fiver in a card to get a beer.
I work from home and he'll come round the back (where the garden office) is to deliver parcels, and always has a smile for me.

I wouldn't know how to tip the bin men unless I watched out for them and ran out with something. Our bins are lined up along the road side.

areyoubeingserviced · 29/10/2019 16:43

I tip the postman £20 in a card.
He has been our postman for ten years

milliefiori · 29/10/2019 16:44

I give our postman £20 because he is brilliant. Rarely give anything to the bin men because they are such grumpy jobsworths. But always used to where we lived before because they were lovely.

BeanBag7 · 29/10/2019 16:46

We seem to have a different postman each week so I wouldnt give a tip.

missyB1 · 29/10/2019 16:47

I usually give our postie a bottle of wine or Prosecco. He’s friendly and helpful. I’ve just realised that I’ve never actually asked him if he drinks!

HuggedTree · 29/10/2019 16:47

I messed up as one year I gave the postie a card with nothing in it, I wrote Thank you for delivering all the cards here’s one for you. Bet he hated me for no money in it now!

Joans3rddaughter · 29/10/2019 16:49

I give the postman £20 in a card at christmas. He's a great postman. When he is on holiday his brother is our postman.
We moved house after 10 years ladt week so I gave our usual postman £20 and adked him to treat his brother to a lemonade!

megletthesecond · 29/10/2019 16:49

No. I never see them.

I tip the lad who delivers the papers though. He usually turns up at the same time every Sunday.

Dissimilitude · 29/10/2019 16:51

We usually wrap up some booze / chocolates and leave it on the bins!

ThreeLittleDots · 29/10/2019 16:54

No, they earn more than me

NearlyGranny · 29/10/2019 16:56

Bin men get a £20 to buy a drink (three of them on the round) but have never tipped the postie! I will this year.

Idontwanttotalk · 29/10/2019 17:06

I know people of my parents' generation used to tip the binmen but I never do. I might if they would put my bins back where they found them instead of my having to go and retrieve them from about 20 feet away, blocking the footpath for children and parents on the school run. Besides, they are well paid.

clickymad · 29/10/2019 17:07

I give the lady that delivers fedex/ ups packages £20 and some wine. We give her eggs throughout the year too. She's absolutely lovely and one year when we had a storm so no deliveries she volunteered to come out here and work Christmas Day so people would get their presents!

It was like something out a film when she turned up at our Christmas party with all the presents we didn't think we'd get until we'll after Christmas. I had a little tear in my eye!

We don't have a postman but the one here also delivers late arrivals on Christmas Day. And that's unpaid!

We give the guy that grits our driveway eggs all year and lots of beer at Christmas but we don't actually pay him!

AllStarBySmashMouth · 29/10/2019 17:11

Maybe if my bin man didn't empty my bin then leave it two houses up the street each day I would 🙄

But no, I never see my bin men or postman. And it wouldn't occur to me to tip them anyway.

Dangerfloof · 29/10/2019 17:23

I give the bin crew something. Usually a card with money. But for the last few years they have bought dog treats for their round and now my dogs love them instead of barking at them. Now I know what you all do I will add a tub of sweets too.

ItIsWhatItIsInnit · 29/10/2019 17:25

Nope

ThebishopofBanterbury · 29/10/2019 18:01

Yes tin of chocs for bin men as it's a hard job. Nothing for postman! Have all different ones anyway not like I know them.
