To think that boiling water is the most underrated cleaning aid ever?

Need to mop a dirty floor? Use boiling water and you will hardly need any cleaning fluid. It Just cleans so fast! Ditto cleaning cupboard boards, walls, bathrooms. Obviously you need to not splash it over your feet and wear gloves for the cleaning cupboards but it has cut cleaning times in half and got me better results than years of standard cleaning. Am I wrong?

I'm a native English speaker but find it odd to use "boiling" to describe water that is merely hot

People are using it to describe water that is still bubbling after being boiled In the kettle. Boiling is the correcting word. It isn’t merely hot

IWorkAtTheCheescakeFactory · 30/10/2019 10:19

I am sure bleach needs cold water as hot water de-activates the active ingredients.

No. Bleach is far more effective with boiling water. Try soaking two dirty dishcloths. One with bleach in cold water, one with bleach in boiling water. You’ll see the difference.

Iggly · 30/10/2019 10:28

Why do you need to bleach a floor unless covered in vomit/poo? They won’t be harbouring bacteria and it’s not as if you eat from it. I suspect hot water with a little cleaner is plenty enough.

Iggly · 30/10/2019 10:29

@IWorkAtTheCheescakeFactory try with just boiling water - you don’t need bleach.

manicmij · 30/10/2019 10:38

A lot of modern materials used for flooring and cupboards are not suitable for boiling water. Microfibre cloths even shouldn't be used with warm never mind boiling water as the fibres swell and prevent 'dirt' from being picked up and trapped. Yes boiling water cleans but only to a limited extent in today's world.

The other poster was questioning the effect of boiling water on bleach.

Iggly · 30/10/2019 10:43

I know they were. But I’m saying that the boiling water would have had the same effect so you don’t know if the bleach made the difference.

easyandy101 · 30/10/2019 10:46

By underrated do you mean in extensive use the world over since almost forever?

Pitterpatterpettysteps · 30/10/2019 10:47

Boiling water is great for killing the weeds that grow between slabs. Works instantly and so much safer & better for the environment than round up etc

Inebriati · 30/10/2019 10:53

I found its more effective than a weed burner and I don't smell like a bonfire afterwards.

NerdyBird · 30/10/2019 10:55

Great tip about the paving slabs, I will try on our 'patio' (section of badly paved garden we can't afford to redo).
I use just-boiled water for heavier cleaning and very very hot tap water for most other stuff.
I use the steam cleaner for floors. I prefer to use small amounts of cleaning product if poss. And aren't we supposed to NOT be using microfibre things these days?

I really must do my kitchen floor!

IWorkAtTheCheescakeFactory · 30/10/2019 11:17

Grin ok. bleach serves no purpose then.

NoAngel1 · 30/10/2019 11:41

Yep, I’m one of those that’s been using just lukewarm water from the tap. I know some of you find this unbelievable but it’s true. Just mopped using just boiled water and it looks cleaner and dried 10x faster. Oops! Thanks OP!

DixieTrix · 30/10/2019 11:53

What's wrong with using microfibre cloths ?? I've not heard this before. I use them all time

Iggly · 30/10/2019 12:20

bleach serves no purpose then

Well if you change two variables (bleach/hot water) - you cannot prove that one definitely made the difference. Basic rule of experiments 🤷🏻‍♀️

The better comparison is hot water with bleach vs hot water no bleach

JaneJeffer · 30/10/2019 13:15

I'm just here for the boiling your kettle so much will cause climate change post.

stucknoue · 30/10/2019 13:41

Bicarbonate of soda, vinegar and basic (thin bleach) ... combined with water in different proportions cleans everything

IWorkAtTheCheescakeFactory · 30/10/2019 14:19

I didn’t change two variables. Pp was comparing bleach + cold water V bleach + hot water. Only temp of water was changed.

amicissimma · 30/10/2019 14:30

If you pour just-boiled or even pretty-darned-hot water onto the underarms of tee shirts it gets rid of sweat smells. Seems more effective as a pre-wash treatment than any chemical I've tried.

Hot water enhances the work of bleach but prevents the action of enzymes in bio powder/liquid, which work best at around/a touch above body temperature (40ºC).

BertieBotts · 30/10/2019 17:08

The use of boiling to mean just-boiled water makes perfect sense to me, it's just less clunky, that's all.

Iggly · 31/10/2019 15:45

Sorry @IWorkAtTheCheescakeFactory I meant it’s worth testing with just hot water then you can see if the bleach makes any difference. because I think the hot water is also doing what the bleach is in your example.
