Need to mop a dirty floor? Use boiling water and you will hardly need any cleaning fluid. It Just cleans so fast! Ditto cleaning cupboard boards, walls, bathrooms. Obviously you need to not splash it over your feet and wear gloves for the cleaning cupboards but it has cut cleaning times in half and got me better results than years of standard cleaning. Am I wrong?

Boiling water from the kettle into the mop bucket and a drop of zoflora Wink

Havelesstravelmore · 29/10/2019 21:37

@Mirroredbox I wish someone would tell that Hinch woman!! That baby of hers must be seriously inhaling a shed load of chemicals.

jaded247 · 29/10/2019 21:39

@Mirroredbox It fizzes up and brings up any gunk that's on the top of any standing water. Gives me the satisfaction that it's working to clear my drains.

Inebriati · 29/10/2019 21:41

I also use it on my garden since its become a ginormous cat litter tray Envy

mynewusernamenow · 29/10/2019 21:42

Many years ago my boss at the fish & chip shop used to laud how I cleaned out the cabinets, water just boiled, sprinkle of degreaser, let that do it's work the add elbow grease with double layer of rubber glove so can still attack when warm, sparkly clean with little effort

Serin · 29/10/2019 21:47

Brilliant for cleaning chillies water bottles too. I seal boiling water in for 10 mins to kill any bacteria.

Brown76 · 29/10/2019 21:48

My kettle boiled dry (by accident) but the steam unexpectedly cleaned off some grubby marks that It was impossible to get off the underside of the cabinets. Miraculous!

Abraid2 · 29/10/2019 21:50

I splash a little boiling water from the kettle onto my quarry tiles and use an e-mop. Does a good job.

Lolwhat · 29/10/2019 22:43

I always thought it was normal to use boiling water to mop the floor, there are people out there that use cold water???

IWorkAtTheCheescakeFactory · 29/10/2019 22:46

You mean to tell me there are people who clean their floors with water that’s not boiling? Confused

Iggly · 29/10/2019 22:46

I use hot tap water for the floors. But I will try the boiling water trick!

Boiling water is also good for cleaning dish clothes. You only need to steep them for 15 mins, mushing them about in a jug with a spoon. Then rinse and voila, clean and fresh smelling dish clothes with no need to machine wash etc.

eurochick · 30/10/2019 04:08

I'm with @PlanDeRaccordement. I'm a native English speaker but find it odd to use "boiling" to describe water that is merely hot.

Taraswell · 30/10/2019 04:15

When I say boiling water I mean water from the kettle that has just boiled. Like immediately when the kettle boils I pour the water into my mop bucket. When I'm mopping you can see the steam coming off the mop and floor it's that boiling.

Monty27 · 30/10/2019 04:24

Check the materials before you liberally subject them to boiling water Shock
Things need cleaning products as well. Not lot necessarily. Just some to break down filthy greasy stuff. Shock

steff13 · 30/10/2019 04:27

I replaced my oven last week, and my steam cleaner got all the disgusting greasy crap from underneath old oven. No additional cleaner needed.

Lemmywinks · 30/10/2019 04:29

It dries faster too than using just warm or cold water. Has a sort of steaming effect.
Its grim when people use a bucket of cold or warm water and a mop and just move the dirt around Halloween Envy i use a few drops of bleach in my hot water too just for the smell

ObtuseTriangle · 30/10/2019 04:29

Can you use boiling water on vinyl planks? I use hot water from the tap currently. I am sure bleach needs cold water as hot water de-activates the active ingredients.

Monty27 · 30/10/2019 05:17

Yes but a steamer isn't the same thing as wiping something over with boiled water

TheSandgroper · 30/10/2019 06:19

obtusetriangle (sorry, I don't know how to link to people)

I used to work in a Threshers and they had vinyl planks. I promise you that boiling hot water with a little detergent, vinegar or methylated spirits works a treat.

Iggly · 30/10/2019 08:24

Steam is water which is boiling and turning into a gas. It’s bloody hot - and can burn you? The temp is slightly hotter than boiling

MrsFezziwig · 30/10/2019 08:33

I’m baffled by this thread. Boiling water is still in the kettle. Once you’ve poured it out it becomes very hot water. So are you saying that most people use cold or lukewarm water to clean things and have to be told to use very hot water? It’s like one of those “Take A Break” tips (and I’m not having a go at OP, from some of the responses on this thread it seems that people do indeed have to be told this).Confused

twilightcafe · 30/10/2019 08:37

Confused Have people been mopping their floors with cold water?

DogAndCatPerson · 30/10/2019 09:12

Me too, MrsFezziwig.

I mop my hard floors with freshly boiled water and a bit of biological washing powder. It cleans brilliantly, smells nice and neutralises any pet smells effectively. Job done.

Crimson72 · 30/10/2019 09:22

Is it ok to use boiling water on old, varnished wooden floors? I use very warm water but worry that boiling water could damage my lovely Victorian floorboards.

DogAndCatPerson · 30/10/2019 09:27

It should be fine, crimson. Presumably, you are wringing the mop or cloth out untIl it’s almost dry anyway before wiping, as soaking or even wet mops/cloths aren’t advised on wooden floors?

Using very hot water, the floor will dry more quickly, so should be better for the wood in the long term as contact with moisture isn’t great. You could always patch test in an area unseen before going the whole hog (say, behind a sofa or whatever).
