To say he can't wear this costume?

DS (aged 8) wants to dress as Jason from Friday the 13th for Halloween (we go trick or treating in our village). I've no idea how he knows this character as he definitely hasn't seen the movie (it's rated 18!) and it just doesn't feel right for him to dress as someone from an 18 certificate movie when he's only 8. Am I being silly or would you feel the same?

I wouldn't have let my 8 year old dress as Jason. I just don't think it's appropriate.

dilemmasdecisions · 27/10/2019 20:14

Thanks aquamarine, it feels inappropriate to me too (and now I've googled Jason and seen what it would involve I'm even more against it!)

I dont think I would let my 8 year old dress up as Jason either. They have terrible costumes for kids. A Childs Play Chucky costume
I was stunned when I saw it!

Sexnotgender · 27/10/2019 20:17

Totally inappropriate.

Aquamarine1029 · 27/10/2019 20:18

My kids are adults now, but I never allowed violent costumes. Wizards, ghosts, even a weird skull mask thing, fine, but no costumes like Jason, Michael, etc with weapons. It's just not necessary. If violent costumes go against your principles, then you need to uphold that.

Bracknellite · 27/10/2019 20:23

Huge horror fan here.
I cannot believe they make Jason costumes for kids (or even worse Chucky according to a PP).

There’s time for all that when they get older. For now stick to your guns and go with something more age appropriate.

WalkofShame · 27/10/2019 20:25

I know this goes against the grain but i saw a child wearing a pennywise outfit last year. Oh my god, I shat myself - he looked incredible!

sunshineandshowers21 · 27/10/2019 20:29

they sell the jason masks in our local pound shop so i’d imagine there will be a few kids wearing them not having any idea who the character is or what film he is from.

dilemmasdecisions · 27/10/2019 20:35

So glad to hear it's not me being precious! I'm definitely set against it and was going to say he can't, now I will do so knowing MN is behind me Grin

Womble you’re not serious surely?

WombleCock · 27/10/2019 20:40

No I’m joking 😂

WombleCock · 27/10/2019 20:41

Jesus who reported that? Fgs 🙄

Aquamarine1029 · 27/10/2019 20:49

Did I get reported?

MyNameIsMrsGrumpy · 27/10/2019 20:55

My dh dresses up at Jason!! He’s in his 40’s and only at adults only parties 🤷‍♀️

I’m amazed that they allow kids costumes like these

RitaMills · 27/10/2019 20:57

Fortnite has a Jason skin btw, that’s why all these little kids know about him.

My DS took it upon himself to get his face painted as Pennywise at a face painting stall last year, had to walk around for hours with my 9 year old with a face like a demon killer clown... I’m betting I was so judged that day! 🙈

DelphiniumBlue · 27/10/2019 21:06

It's not just what's appropriate for him, what about the children in houses he's calling at? Or passing in the street?
I can remember DS3 being so frightened of some of the masks we had to put a note on the door telling callers to remove their masks before knocking. I'm sure he wasn't the only one.
Keep it traditional wizard/ ghost.

Ciwirocks · 27/10/2019 21:24

I am with you op, kids dressed as characters from adult themed horror films is wrong. I have just seen pictures on Facebook (a local party planner page) and there were kids who looked 3/4 years old dressed as Chucky and the bride of Chucky. Halloween outfits should be age appropriate, if it were my ds he would have to think of something else to wear. I admit that I am not really a fan of Halloween in general though and don’t really get it.

GeneHuntLover · 27/10/2019 21:29

How does he know about Jason?

dilemmasdecisions · 27/10/2019 21:47

Delphinium that's where I'm coming from, not only is it not appropriate for him, it isn't for other children either.

Gene I'm not sure (I think I said in OP).
He doesn't play fortnite, we don't even have a games console, he definitely hasn't seen the movie. I suspect it is from other kids at school - he has one friend particularly who seems to know all the horror movies and characters (whether he has seen the films or not I don't know).

One of my 5 year old pupils once told me had dressed as Chucky for Halloween - not only this but he appeared to have seen the film too...
