To say he can't wear this costume?

DS (aged 8) wants to dress as Jason from Friday the 13th for Halloween (we go trick or treating in our village). I've no idea how he knows this character as he definitely hasn't seen the movie (it's rated 18!) and it just doesn't feel right for him to dress as someone from an 18 certificate movie when he's only 8. Am I being silly or would you feel the same?

I would allow it. Jason seems to be a big thing at school for my 8 year old and at the school halloween disco apparently there were lots of pennywises! I don't believe that the children have ever seen the films (mine definitely haven't!) but the character is definitely well known amongst children and I have no real idea how or why. He probably wants to be cool in front of his friends.

EskewedBeef · 27/10/2019 22:31

I knew who Freddy Krueger was when I was in junior school, we used to play Nightmare on Elm Street at playtime, and a boy in my class had a toy version of his glove with blades attached. None of us had seen the film.

Avenilson · 27/10/2019 22:58

I do think this plays into the absolute politically correct bullshit that is ruining everything now. The point of Halloween is to look scary. One of mine wanted to be Chucky the killer doll. I have never seen the movie, but most importantly, he hasn't either, he just heard it was scary with red hair and they do sell kids costumes online based on Chucky. I said no, because the costumes were crap.

Instead I have three and being a face painter they will look like the dead anyway Chucky or Jason or not.

I wish I saw @WombleCock's post. I'll bet he doesn't even know who Jason is in context OP.

WombleCock · 27/10/2019 23:06

@Avenilson I joked my DD was going dressed as an infamous serial killer. That’s all.
Someone must have reported it because it mentioned the very famous serial killers name Hmm Sad life that person must lead eh!

ExcitedForFuture · 27/10/2019 23:16

I saw a facebook post with an 8 year old dressed as Harley Quinn. Looked totally inappropriate so YANBU.

I hate how ridiculous halloween costumes have got these days.

BritishHorrorStory · 27/10/2019 23:28

I personally don't see the issue but I see most disagree so I guess I'm in the minority. Although I'm giving my opinion without having any children so I may feel differently if I did. But I'd just see it as a kid in a scary costume for Halloween.

MissLadyM · 27/10/2019 23:41

I love horror but hate the thoughts of kids dressed as Jason, Freddie etc. They shouldn't know who they are!

My kids are going to be skeletons for Halloween. They’re 8 and 6, and that’s creepy enough as far as I’m concerned.

gwenneh · 28/10/2019 00:53

There must be something going on in 8-year-old pop culture with Jason as a recent topic; I had to veto a Jason costume as well for my DS but at the school Halloween event on Friday there were seriously half a dozen Jason’s wandering!

mamandematribu · 28/10/2019 08:10

Very inappropriate for anybody regardless of age.

IVEgotthePUMPKINS · 28/10/2019 08:12

Someone i know dressed their ONE YEAR OLD as Chucky Shock

isabellerossignol · 28/10/2019 08:13

My 8 year old knows all sorts of horror characters and he definitely has not seen the films.

8 year olds knows the character names because people use them on Minecraft and stuff like that.

WalkofShame · 28/10/2019 08:19

Someone i know dressed their ONE YEAR OLD as Chucky

I’d have LMAO at this. The one year old won’t know what they’re dressed as if that’s what you’re worried about.

Strugglingtodomybest · 28/10/2019 08:27

It wouldn't bother me tbh.

Ronnie27 · 28/10/2019 08:27

They all know about Jason from Fortnite and Freddy Krueger keeps popping up on YouTube due to Halloween and American kids dressing up. Tbf those films probably look absolutely rubbish these days and will be a massive letdown when they’re eventually old enough to watch them! Grin

RitaMills · 28/10/2019 08:32

Freddy and Pennywise are skins on Fortnite also. DS is 10 and all his little friends talk about these horror characters, none of them have seen the movies though... I think it’s just a bit of a brag for them and obviously it’s talked about at school so even if your child doesn’t play these games chances are their friends will have and that’s why they know about these characters.

Although my DS thinks Pennywise is great the kid would shit himself if he actually was allowed to watch IT.

Disfordarkchocolate · 28/10/2019 08:37

I've just had to google Jason and Pennywise, I have had a sheltered life. Anyhow, if their characters from 18 movies then I would say no, there are plenty of suitable ghoulish costumes out there for his age range.

Cautionsharpblade · 28/10/2019 08:38

I’m old enough to remember all the speculation about children watching Chucky during the James Bulger trial.

isabellerossignol · 28/10/2019 08:43

I’m old enough to remember all the speculation about children watching Chucky during the James Bulger trial.

So am I, but wasn't it dismissed in the end as having been the press whipping up a frenzy about something that didn't happen?

MysweetAudrina · 28/10/2019 08:44

Meh I don't think it would bother me. My ds9 last year dressed as Donald Trump. I think I would have preferred Jason or Freddie, not that i have watched the films as i am a total wimp when it comes to scary movies. Brought the kids to see Gremlins at a retro drive in last night and that's as scary as i watch.

WalkofShame · 28/10/2019 08:45

@isabellerossignol

That’s about the size of it I think

Cautionsharpblade · 28/10/2019 09:44

@isabellerossignol yes, that’s why I said ‘speculation’. It was looked into during the investigation and the law on child access to videos was clarified a year after the trial. There was never any direct link but I still see Chucky and think ‘ugh no’

Cautionsharpblade · 28/10/2019 09:46

@MysweetAudrina Gremlins was rated 15 in the UK when it was first released.

UndertheCedartree · 28/10/2019 10:28

Absolutely not! I personally wouldn't allow anything scary. Luckily it's not been an issue for us - my lityle girl (7y) wants to be a polar bear this year!
