To give you my biggest tip on losing/maintaining a slim weight?

Prepared to be flamed for this because of waste.

Basically I don’t eat everything on my plate. Sometimes I do but a lot of the time I don’t.

I do care about wasting food but then I think about the masses of waste that goes on in farming, factories, supermarkets etc.

And if you think about how much money is spent on the dieting industry, it seems to be a paradox in terms of expense/waste.

Restaurants, family gatherings, dinner parties etc.

How on earth can I put less on my plate?

Who ever need to stuff themselves in restaurants? It's the only place where it's not impolite not to finish your plate - the portions are designed for an average big eater (it kinds of makes sense Grin ) not for everyone to finish!

I do hate people who feel the need to "plate" the food for you, it's just so rude and common. Of course don't finish if they have given you too much instead of letting you chose how much you need.

That's not enough to make you keep a slim weight though...

DownstairsMixUp · 27/10/2019 20:21

How odd. Use a smaller plate.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 27/10/2019 20:28

You’re not wrong OP. I was brought up to clear my plate and I would have to sit at the table until it was all gone. My mum has since said she regrets doing this because now I eat everything on my plate, even if I’m full, without thinking about it, it’s just ingrained in me. I was also never ever allowed any junk food, sweets or crisps so as an adult if I get any I eat loads as if I’m never going to get the chance again.

I'm the same on the first bit - I find it impossible not to clear my plate so have to be very mindful about what I put on it - but weirdly, the opposite when it comes to junk food - I used to hoard it and now I just don't really eat it. I occasionally buy it, but tend to just keep it "incase I need it".

Eat less and you’ll lose weight...groundbreaking stuff. Just cook less to start with surely??

Myimaginaryfamiliarhasfleas · 27/10/2019 20:49

That's exactly how I stayed slim growing up. Not consciously for weight reasons, but because I didn't have much of an appetite at the best of times and couldn't see the point of eating past the point of being satisfied and spoiling my enjoyment of the meal. Infuriating for my poor mother who grew up on rations and couldn't bear binning food.

I wish I could recapture that discipline.

Well, apart from me thinking that most people don't eat out that often, in restaurants most menus have 'light bites' or smaller portions one way or another, or I know people that ask for a starter in stead of the main. Or of course you could choose the salad. 'Family gatherings' in either mine or dh's families would tend to be buffet / help yourself in one way or another, so again you choose your portion size then if you are invited to dinner, just say to the host you only want a small portion of the protein and presumably help yourself to veg and carbs.

D'oh.

^^

GettingABitDesperateNow · 27/10/2019 20:57

I agree OP

You cant always give yourself a smaller portion. Even when you cook for yourself - some things come in portions (unless you cook absolutely everything from scratch) or dont keep. For example you cant easily keep half an avocado or aubergine. Even when you cook from scratch sometimes I'll do a stir fry and it doesn't look much but by the time I've put it all together and put a sauce on it and put it on my plate it has somehow grown. And I cook every day but I dont always get it right. If there is enough for another meal I'll freeze it but if there is say a third of a portion left over I just end up eating it....and I really shouldn't

Justkeeprollingalong · 27/10/2019 21:03

Do you eat out/elsewhere every night? If not, how can not clearing your plate every so often affect your weight?

Dooleydally · 27/10/2019 21:07

Hahahaha. Are you the poster with the name beginning with C with a teeny tiny ballerina daughter?

But what if I want the pork belly and trifle? Do I order the salad and fruit just so I finish my plate? Crazy thinking!

Cut your portion sizes instead of throwing out food you silly bint.

People really are so stupid.

WorraLiberty · 27/10/2019 21:12

OP, how often do you eat food plated up by other people?

TheFormidableMrsC · 27/10/2019 21:13

Eating out, my stepmum eats only half of what is on her plate. My DD always leaves something because she stops when she’s full. Both are very slim.

ethelfleda · 27/10/2019 21:14

Put it in the compost!

Dooleydally · 27/10/2019 21:18

@WorraLiberty

Fairly often I’d say. I go out quite a bit and to dinner parties. But even when I’m on my own and cooking for myself I’ll find myself realising my eyes were bigger than my stomach.

I used to feel terribly guilty throwing away food I’d prepared but now I don’t. Well I do a bit. But I rationalise that there’s more waste going on beyond my control

I absolutely do!

I host teen girls and always put food on table and let them help themselves. Remember horror of forcing down pike of mashed potato at dinner with my first bf parents as a skinny small appetite 18 year old!

NonUrinatInVentum · 27/10/2019 21:28

Food is more than calories.

I eat 800 calories of carbs I get fat. I eat 800 calories of fat I don't. There are multiple metabolic processes that determine whether you lose or gain weight. Ghrelin, leptin, insulin, glucagon. Learn basic biochemistry.

STOP TELLING PEOPLE TO EAT LESS MOVE MORE. IF IT WORKED NOBODY WOULD BE FAT.

ChickenyChick · 27/10/2019 21:32

How often do you eat out?!

I eat mostly at home, or order something thst suits my appetite

It’s not hard

Why do you think other people don’t do this?Confused

I have an amazing trip for people who are thirsty: drink water! It really helps. It’s my secret trip for not being thirsty. Wink

Another secret: when you are tired, go to sleep

ChickenyChick · 27/10/2019 21:33

Nonurinate, but without carbs people get hangry and SHOUTY!!!!

Isitnearlyweekend · 27/10/2019 21:33

This is surely a joke post 🤔
