My sister is staying at a holiday cottage in the NE of England and found this beastie next to her bed. So many questions...

What questions? It’s a spider.

Wildorchidz · 26/10/2019 14:49

That seems to have captured another spider.

Therunecaster · 26/10/2019 14:50

More what is under its leg. What type is it and does it bite!

WTF did I look - eurgh hate hate things like this

LaurieFairyCake · 26/10/2019 14:50

That ATE another spider and is carrying round its carcass for FUN ShockShockShock

MereDintofPandiculation · 26/10/2019 14:55

Or a spider which has just moulted.

The downside to having an exoskeleton is that if you grow, you have to shed the old skeleton and grow a new one.

DaveMyHat · 26/10/2019 14:55

Why did I even open this thread

bibot · 26/10/2019 14:57

Poor things just trying to have a nap with it's teddy bear spider Grin
(It is a monster tho)

Therunecaster · 26/10/2019 14:58

I wondered about it being a moulted skin. It may explain the unusual colour and smoothness of the spiders body. Apparently it was about an inch long and scuttled off under a chest of drawers.

Woodlouse spider

We have loads in our garden. Had obe in the house once.
They are a bit vicious

ExhaustionSIeep · 26/10/2019 14:59

We have no wood lice though 🤣

Slappadabass · 26/10/2019 15:00

It looks like a woodlouse spider, I had one in my garden years ago. Apparently they tend to be found in old brick work and can give a nasty bite but aren't poisonous. Horrible looking things!

ExhaustionSIeep · 26/10/2019 15:00

We’ve had the brownish ones as above but also yellow/red ones. They are quite stunning (from a distance)

youngestisapsycho · 26/10/2019 15:01

But how big is it?

Therunecaster · 26/10/2019 15:03

About an inch long with a large body and front legs.. Shock

nmc99 · 26/10/2019 15:04

Fuck me why did I look, am already in a living hell as it is with massive ones constantly appearing around the place

FrankenCat · 26/10/2019 15:04

Has she burnt the holiday cottage down yet? Surely the insurance will cover it?

Aus84 · 26/10/2019 15:06

Oh that photo makes it look big - but only an inch?! That's hilarious. Any spider/insect is going to look scary that close up. Actually, no, get even closer and some look like little bears.

Therunecaster · 26/10/2019 15:07

Unlike me she's not afraid of them at all. She just took a photo and then watched it scuttle away next to her bed. There's no way I could sleep knowing it would be prowling around at night!!!

OP posts:
FilledSoda · 26/10/2019 15:08

I need one of those , we have lots of woodlice

SatansReject · 26/10/2019 15:10

They have a very nasty, painful bite these things!

ExhaustionSIeep · 26/10/2019 15:43

This was one of ours. Most are brown but we sometimes get these ones too!

If that’s a dead spider accompanying it, it is likely that’s a female that’s killed a male after mating. They do this if the male doesn’t make a quick escape. It is spider breeding season.

whydobirds · 26/10/2019 16:26

It's a spider with its shed exoskeleton, which is why its legs are a little wonky - it hasn't hardened up or stretched out properly yet.

I collect the exoskeletons of my tarantulas and stuff them, then mount them in resin and turn them into paperweights
I'm yet to get a good one from my Goliath Bird-Eater though...she always trashes them on the way out.
I (heart) spiders, they are fascinating creatures.

I don't get many visitors...
