Slugs in the conservatory AIBU

We live in a rented property (we are also landlords of our old family home which we rent out in another town, so we can live in this town close to family) and the conservatory has so many slugs in it every morning, I’m talking 6-8 slugs removed every morning, the rugs and kids toys are covered in slug trails and it’s a bit grim.

We use the room as a play room for our 3 little toddlers and it’s not ideal having to search for slugs and clean every morning before we play (the babies try and eat them 🙈) and toddler is terrified.

The letting agents have just said that’s life with a conservatory and to get on with it. We don’t have a conservatory on the house that we own and rent out, but if we did I would not be ok with the tenants putting up with slugs crawling all over their things.

AIBU to want to looked into and sorted? Can it ever be sorted?

Any opinions/advice welcomed.

Thank you very much

We had this issue in our kitchen. I put tape over any visible gaps/holes and then put a lot of salt down. That seems to have stopped the problem, but I don't know what'll happen when I remove the tape/salt. Confused

DriftingLeaves · 26/10/2019 09:05

We have no slugs in our conservatory the letting agents a telling porkies.

19lottie82 · 26/10/2019 09:06

We get them on our kitchen, there isn’t much you can do unfortunately. Have you tried slug traps outside?

19lottie82 · 26/10/2019 09:07

I also put salt down this seems to help a lot.

SandraOhshair · 26/10/2019 09:08

Fill any gaps and put salt round the perimeter near skirting boards. 10 mins to fix.

WeAreStardustWeAreGolden · 26/10/2019 09:08

I've never had slugs in our conservatory

ElfridaEtAl · 26/10/2019 09:08

We have this issue bear our front door and it makes me feel sick, OH did the gap underneath with filler incase there were any small holes leading to outside but they're still coming in so we're going to go over it again. Our youngest is 3 with ASD and tried to play with them Envy (clearly not envy)

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 26/10/2019 09:18

It's just a case if keeping in top of it. You need to find where they're getting in. We get tiny gaps in the skirting board which we seal with clear sealant. Every now and then it comes apart again and in come the slugs. Check window seals as well, particularly around the bottoms of the windows and doors. You can get thin insulation on a roll like selotape which you can put around the door frames. You can also put salt around the outside walls of the conservatory. Remember to replace it when it's been raining. Keep on top of the problem and you should be fine.

Winteriscomingfast · 26/10/2019 09:24

It is a damp issue. Salt the floor and then get up at 3am and you will catch them- do this for several weeks.

OhioOhioOhio · 26/10/2019 09:25

Loads of bleach at the door of the conservatory. Washing away the bleach. Repeat. And a ton of slug pellets.

Yuk.

OhioOhioOhio · 26/10/2019 09:25

Could you borrow a power hose?

dementedpixie · 26/10/2019 09:28

We get them in the kitchen on occasion. Dont know where they hide but I assume they come in the patio doors when they're open

Nishky · 26/10/2019 09:28

Cinnamon by the door works for us. Read somewhere that they don’t like it. Salt leads to a grim slug graveyard to clear up whereas cinnamon tends to keep them out..

dementedpixie · 26/10/2019 09:29

OP cant have slug pellets with toddlers in the house. Copper tape is supposed to help

NearlyGranny · 26/10/2019 09:31

This time of year they try to come in under the back door, and we're not damp.

Our solution turned up in the garden all by herself in early Autumn: Hazel the hedgehog! She is growing fat on a diet of slugs and snails and none have found their way inside since.

Block all the ways in, buy a kilo of salt and give each intruder half a teaspoonful.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 26/10/2019 09:35

Slugs aren't inevitable in a conservatory* but i doubt your landlord is going to do any remedial work so you'll have to treat the symptoms and not the cause.

*I used to get slugs in the dining room with my old patio doors. Had the doors replaced - no more slugs. My parents' conservatory doesn't get slugs, possibly because there's a low brick wall under the big windows.

cupoftea84 · 26/10/2019 09:35

Slugs won't cross copper tape which lasts longer than salt so put that round. Also try beer traps in the garden and you can buy nematodes online and just water the ground where the digs are.

RB68 · 26/10/2019 09:37

I second going in during the night and removing - clear any vegetation around the outside and give conservatory a good clean. I would keep toys in boxes up off the floor until issue sorted. We have slugs too and you get used to dealing with them - tends to be with older properties where they have found a way in

RolytheRhino · 26/10/2019 09:42

They may be breeding in there unless there's a hole they're getting in through? We had slug trails in ours for over a month until we caught the bloody thing and it stopped. No idea where it was hiding in the day- we looked everywhere!

dementedpixie · 26/10/2019 09:45

I think ours must hide behind the dishwasher. Think some hitch a lift in from our long haired cat too

Userzzzzz · 26/10/2019 09:49

We’ve had them in our kitchen and they are bloody vile. We found putting pellets down outside keeps them at bay and you can get non toxic ones. I used to see them when up feeding the baby and it made me feel so disgusted. Salt makes a bit of a mess so if you can avoid it do. It must also be a fairly horrid way to go for the slugs and I’ve felt bad about salting some so I don’t like doing it anymore.

Itsallpetetong · 26/10/2019 09:56

Never had slugs in our conservatory in the house we lived in for 12 years so the letting agent is fobbing you off.

That said I would be emptying the room and examining the place myself to look for any tiny gaps they could be getting through.

Recently had one in our kitchen, it had come in on someone’s shoe. Took weeks to actually find it and chuck it outside.

Namechanger445 · 26/10/2019 19:26

Breeding slugs, what a horrible thought!!

I’m really reluctant to try salt because the children are 12 months (twins) and just turned 2 and I can’t trust them not to start poking around where they shouldn’t and eat some. With 3 of that she it’s impossible to watch all of them every second.

I will try some of the natural remedies people have suggested. I think they could be coming in through the bottom of the sliding doors so I will see if I can do something with that too.

Thanks so much for all the responses!

I feel for you. They’re so disgusting. I had them in an old rented home. They were coming through gaps. One day when it was sunny I got down on all floors to see if I could see light coming through and found tiny gaps under the skirting. I put tape around the skirting to act as a barrier and sprinkled salt outside. It did the trick.

frogsbreath · 26/10/2019 19:50

I have slugs coming into my kitchen! Absolutely disgusting, and yes if I go down in the middle of the night that's when I might catch one!

We've filled holes and put down salt but still maybe once a week I find one late at night or I find slug trail in the morning.

It does seem more common than you'd think, our boy's nursery found them inside once and went on quite the mission to clean the place and prevent anymore in.
