To think you can drink from a bathroom tap?

Help me settle a long-standing debate in my household.

My dh thinks that you can't drink water from the bathroom tap and only a kitchen tap.

I think he's daft as a brush and it all comes from the same source. It's totally fine to drink.

Depends where you live and if you have a water tank.

Eleanorbellanor · 25/10/2019 19:45

We do in our house

BeBraveAndBeKind · 25/10/2019 19:45

Of course you can. Where does he think the bathroom tap water comes from?

Faez · 25/10/2019 19:45

Ewww upstairs water comes from the attic tank in my house, god knows what's lurking in there

1CantPickAName · 25/10/2019 19:46

Yes, I do believe that you can drink water from the bathroom tap, it is the same water source

GrumpyHoonMain · 25/10/2019 19:46

Depends. If you have a water tank that supplies upstairs then no.

rainbowruthie · 25/10/2019 19:47

Kitchen tap mains fed
Bathroom tap usually tank fed, so no not suitable for drinking

LochJessMonster · 25/10/2019 19:47

I always drink from the bathroom tap. Like hell am I going to go all the way downstairs to the kitchen to get a glass of water.

NoHummus · 25/10/2019 19:47

Eh?! Don't be daft Mr Pickles, of course you can drink from the bathroom tap! Hmm

OneTwoFreddysComingForYou · 25/10/2019 19:47

An old boyfriend of mine was staying over and asked for a glass of water so I got him one from the upstairs bathroom as it was closer. He said eww bathroom water and I was Hmm. I’ve always drunk from both and never known a difference!

But apparently in some houses the bathroom water comes from one of those big tanks in the loft so it’s been festering a while or something.

TeenPlusTwenties · 25/10/2019 19:48

If bathroom water is fed from the attic water tank, then no, it often tastes manky.
If you don't have a water tank and it is mains fed then it's fine.

sandyfoot · 25/10/2019 19:48

If it comes from a tank then no, it's ugh, but if it is from the mains then no probs.

DeadAliveDead · 25/10/2019 19:48

All the water in our house is fed straight from the mains, and we have no water tank, so it all comes in from the same place.

If you have a tank in the attic feeding your bathroom, then I wouldnt drink it.

Sakura7 · 25/10/2019 19:49

Yep, if upstairs water is coming from a tank you shouldn't drink it.

DramaAlpaca · 25/10/2019 19:49

The cold water upstairs in our house comes from a tank in the attic so there's no way I'd drink water from the upstairs taps.

dementedpixie · 25/10/2019 19:49

Our upstairs taps are fed from a header tank in the loft so there could be things lurking in it. We still drink it though. Kitchen tap is mains fed rather than from the tank

HelloCanYouHearMe · 25/10/2019 19:49

The house I grew up in had a cold water tank in the attic that fed the bathroom, so not for drinking.

Fortheloveofscience · 25/10/2019 19:50

Yes in this house because we’ve got a combi boiler so all taps are fed directly from the mains supply. No in the last house because the cold water tank in the loft was ancient with god knows what in it.

bumblingbovine49 · 25/10/2019 19:50

If you have a combination boiler and water to all tap from the mains you can but in the past a lot off houses had tanks in the loft that provided water to the bathroom. If you have that sort of plumbing you probably shouldn't drink that tap ater In the bathroom

GreySheep · 25/10/2019 19:50

It horrifies me that some houses have tanks of water for upstairs. Never had one and never would.

All from mains here and fine to drink from bathroom.

As an aside, if you won’t drink from upstairs due to the tank thing, how do you brush your teeth?

holidays987 · 25/10/2019 19:50

Not if it's from a tank in the loft. But most people have got rid of those now, most homes have mains water upstairs & that's fine to drink. Same as from the kitchen.

I never would in a house that could have a tank or in a hotel or anything like that. Just at homeSmile

WeeDangerousSpike · 25/10/2019 19:51

If you have a water tank in the loft that feeds the bathroom taps then I wouldn't. They often have I'll fitting lids that let all sorts of dust and crap in.

When we moved in here we emptied the tank and washed it out - I'd seen too many episodes of rogue traders with blokes pissing in the tank when working in the loft to want to clean my teeth with that water! Especially with recently laid insulation and disgruntled previous tenants that thought the landlord was moving in instead!

Anyway, drained the tank, and my god you wouldn't believe the silty cruddy stuff at the bottom. DP thought I was bonkers till he saw it all.

Previously we had no tank, just mains feed everywhere, and I did drink from the bathroom tap.

RoLaren · 25/10/2019 19:51

'And two dead pigeons in the water tank!' Anyone know the reference? Smile

dementedpixie · 25/10/2019 19:52

Meh, our tank water tastes ok so we must have immunity to whatever lurks in it

MyOtherProfile · 25/10/2019 19:53

We can only drink from the kitchen tap because it's the only one that doesn't get affected by the salt from our water softener.
