When feeding ducks...

AIBU to think they all need to be carefully given a fair share? That's how I fed them as a child and I am curious to know whether everyone has an innate desire to treat ducks fairly or not.

Yup. You hone your food throwing technique to try to reach all of them fairly

MLMhun · 24/10/2019 23:19

Me too! Especially if there are tiny ones waiting outside of the main group. I make sure I throw some directly to them.

TyneTeas · 24/10/2019 23:20

And scatter it so they don't fight

megletthesecond · 24/10/2019 23:21

Yanbu. I fling it in a few directions to give the slower ducks a chance at some seed.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 24/10/2019 23:21

Yep! Dh does it too & the oldest 2 dc Grin

altogirl · 24/10/2019 23:21

Above all, don't throw an entire loaf of homemade bread at them.

MLMhun · 24/10/2019 23:22

By the way, feeding bread to ducks isn’t harmful.

Justajot · 24/10/2019 23:30

@altogirl what happens is you throw a whole loaf at them?

OP posts:
SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 24/10/2019 23:31

I throw food to the girls. The ones here can catch peas Grin

Zebraaa · 24/10/2019 23:33

I give my favourite duck his own baguette.

Crunchymum · 24/10/2019 23:34

They need to be fed frozen peas. Not bread.

Bread is like Mac D to ducks.

meow1989 · 24/10/2019 23:36

Absolutely. Equality for all ducks. Although sometimes if there is an underdog they might get a few extra morsels.

HOWEVER:

If swans begin to swam the correct thing to do is throw as much feed at them in one go whilst running for your life to the car/safety.

WineIsMyCarb · 24/10/2019 23:37

Why frozen peas? Surely they would be all crunchy in one's beak?

MLMhun · 24/10/2019 23:37

Better they get fed bread @crunchymum than nothing at all. It’s a lot easier to take some stale bread out with you/kids rather than frozen peas.

Florencenotflo · 24/10/2019 23:39

I took Dd to feed the ducks in the summer. We got mobbed by fucking vermin seagulls. Dd was terrified so dropped her bag of food which just made more of them appear!

There was me thinking it would be a nice activity to do with my Daughter. Instead she will probably grown up with an irrational fear of seagulls. I didn't see one bloody duck near the pond 😂

But... yes, as a child I use to make sure that the stragglers were well fed too, not just the bolshy ones near the front.

Florencenotflo · 24/10/2019 23:41

I read somewhere (and I'm sure it was from the wildlife trust) recently saying people need to start feeding bread again. People have taken on board the info about feeding proper bird seed or peas, bits of apple etc but now the colder weather is here they need a bit of 'junk' in fmthe

Divebar · 24/10/2019 23:42

I googled it when a duck appeared at my back door. No bread but porridge oats ( uncooked obviously) and peas. He certainly wolfed all the porridge oats down but was less enthusiastic about eating his greens.

Florencenotflo · 24/10/2019 23:42

Posted accidentally!

In the form of bread to build up their fat reserves for winter. Will try and find it!

Zipppyx · 24/10/2019 23:45

I do love an ethical dilemma! 😅

Advicewel · 24/10/2019 23:46

Feeding ducks is being discouraged here because the food people are throwing is attracting rats :(

INeedSleepToo · 24/10/2019 23:46

I think that poster was created by some random person - all wildlife charities have confirmed that bread is still bad for ducks and shouldn’t be fed to them.

OP my dc’sare always determined to feed the ducks at the back that have no interest in food. I think they just like having an excuse to lob stuff as far as they can. Any ducks that get too big for their boots and start pecking at each other or even (shock, horror) getting out of the pond and waddling up to us are treated with the derision they deserve.

Branster · 24/10/2019 23:59

We always do our best to feed those on the fringes or right at the back. You have to be strategic and works best when there are at least two of you.

Thesuzle · 25/10/2019 00:03

No. Actually bread is bad for them,

Papergirl1968 · 25/10/2019 00:12

We have Canadian geese at our park pond. They’re aggressive bastards.
The dds are teenagers now but when they were little the geese terrified them. One pecked at our clothes once while I flapped my arms at it saying “shoo!” Grin

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/10/2019 00:17
