I work in an industry where sick days are frowned upon.So most of the time I work on through so does everyone else.
This past week I developed a headache raging sore throat.ear ache and dreadful wet cough.I had a temp of 102 for a.few.days so I asked to leave early once.
One of two of the days I made mistakes as I couldn't concentrate.😰Anyway today I got to see the gp.I was prescribed 1000mg of antibiotics.as he could see I wasn't right and I have asthma. So my breathing is struggling.
I know some people take a.week off.for illness.What.do you think is reasonable.Forgot to mention I've eaten very little all week as I have zero appetite.

Take off as long as you need!

Fweakout · 24/10/2019 21:58

er...until I was better!

Whyhaveidonethis · 24/10/2019 21:58

Until I was physically well enough to go to work.

SabineUndine · 24/10/2019 21:59

If you're having difficulty breathing, you shouldn't be at work. If it doesn't improve within 48 hours of you starting the antibiotics, get yourself back to the doctor. Seriously.

BeanBag7 · 24/10/2019 21:59

Well it depends how long it takes until you feel better! I took a week of for similar symptoms a few years ago (also asthmatic) I'm a teacher so taking time off is not really the done thing, but when I got to the point i couldnt speak because i couldn't catch my breath i had to call it a day. If I needed more than a week I would have taken it.

ActualHornist · 24/10/2019 21:59

As long as it takes to feel better.

The longest I’ve had off in one go was two weeks and that’s was for a virus - I was actually ill for four weeks but two of those weeks were Xmas holidays Sad

By the time I was well again I was so fatigued. It was horrible. I’m sure I pulled a muscle coughing.

EmmaC78 · 24/10/2019 22:00

As others have said surely you just go back when you feel well enough to.

Elieza · 24/10/2019 22:00

If you are not well enough to work your full usual standard hours or are contagious you should not be at work.
Antibiotics usually kick in after three to four days. I’d expect to be off that long. Minimum. Longer if I didn’t perk up enough to work a full day. Go back too soon and you will sit about with half shut eyes not concentrating properly and feeling crap.
Hope you feel better soon. Flowers

kristallen · 24/10/2019 22:00

If you go back too early you'll take far longer to get better.

coconuttelegraph · 24/10/2019 22:01

Surely you'd stay off until you were well enough to to back, it's not a question with a set answer

MsJaneAusten · 24/10/2019 22:02

Forget about ‘how long’. You can’t plan that. Just say you’re too ill to be at work, then stay off and get better. In most workplaces you can self certify for the first five days. After that, you might need to see a gp for a sick note. But don’t worry about it yet, just rest.

HappyHammy · 24/10/2019 22:02

I'd wait until I finished the antibiotics then probably go back after another 2 days if I was better

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 24/10/2019 22:03

Until I was better. Also an asthmatic and chest infections usually land me in hospital. I wouldn't risk pushing myself and ending up being extremely ill. Work will wait.

TheWolves · 24/10/2019 22:05

I'd stay off until I was better. I've been penalised before for going back too early and then having to take more time off, which then statistically shows as more than one instance of sickness.

sunnyblue · 24/10/2019 22:07

I don't get sick pay so I have no option but to go in despite feeling shit and dose up on paracetamol and do an ultra slow job. It's a desk role though and nothing physical.

depends what you can afford. If money is no obstacle, I would stay at home until.ypu feel reasonable human again. p

Passmethepepsi · 24/10/2019 22:10

Definitely until you feel better. Last year I worked through the most dreadful chest/throat infection I’d ever had. I felt absolutely horrific but felt I had to go in as there was nobody to cover me etc.

It took literally months to get over and didn’t start to improve until I had a weeks holiday. I’d never put work above my health again

Petrichor11 · 24/10/2019 22:12

I had a week off with something similar a couple of years ago. When I went back my boss tried to send me home again because I still sounded so awful (I felt much better than I sounded by that point).

But tbh the answer is simply “until you feel better”, although I appreciate if you don’t get sick pay or will face disciplinary action over sickness then that will affect your decision.

whatisforteamum · 24/10/2019 22:28

Money isn't the issue.I have savings.I don't want to take the piss.I did work 8 years with only 2 days off.
We are family overstaffed in preparation for xmas.
My son frowned at me as.he had a cough for weeks and worked on.He.doesn't have breathing difficulties though.exhausted
Everything makes me breathless.and exhausted

If you have asthma and a chest infection it could kill you, people do not take it seriously enough just because they could carry on with a cough doesn't mean you can. You can cause more damage to your lungs, take time off and rest or you will end up in hospital! And not just one or two days wait until your peak flow has gone back to normal and if you don't know what normal is for you get booked in with an asthma nurse and get an asthma action plan sorted.

The media have a lot to answer for the way asthma is portrayed in films Angry

KayakingOnDown · 24/10/2019 22:40

Sounds like you need at least a week.

Just take off as long as you need - until you are better.

whatisforteamum · 24/10/2019 22:42

Thank you.My dsis and niece have it quite bad.Niece was hospitalized lots when little.
That is why I dragged myself to go to nip the bastard in the bud😰Weird thing.is my boss.has asthma and let me work.
Its.is.a very physical 12 hour day too.
I will inform them I wont.be in for a.few days.
No disciplinary as I had an excellent appraisal.
How.do the media portray asthma?

TheWolves · 24/10/2019 23:04

I've got something similar at the moment. With my asthma, I'm struggling to walk from one end of the house to the other without needing my inhaler.

You'll get better faster if you rest. Twelve hours hard work a day could add days, if not weeks of recovery time on.

whatisforteamum · 24/10/2019 23:17

Sorry you are suffering similar thewolves.

Bunbunbunny · 25/10/2019 01:15

Asthmatics tend to be shown as either nerds, weak, unable to do sport or always taking their inhaler. If your asthma is well controlled you shouldn't need to take the reliever all the time and can live an active life but you never see that on tv. Leonard from Big Bang theory springs to mind. I just found asthma isn't taken seriously and it bugs me a lot!

Then people find themselves justifying why it's not just a cold or cough to them when they have asthma. It's never just a cold or a cough it can go downhill fast & land you in hospital. It's a long term health condition in the same way diabetes is and should be managed in a similar way. I didn't look after myself and ended up in hospital with just a cough and my Nan died at the age of 47 from an asthma attack so it's really close to home to me.

whatisforteamum · 25/10/2019 01:52

Bless you bun bun bunny.Did you get a cough that deteriorated fast?.I've been really lucky in that I often don't use my inhaler.I used to get breathless around cats and dust and cold weather.Last time i.struggled was 2018 heatwave.Quiet frightening.Look after yourself.I.Will have to let my boss know I'm not prepared to risk hospital.
It is dreadful that we.have to justify ourselves so much tbh.
