Twin birth

Thetirednessisreal · 24/10/2019 19:06

Hi I’m 34 weeks pregnant with twins

I was all set for a natural birth was told it would be around 36 weeks

At my meeting yday the consultant told me
That they would wait until 37 weeks to induce me. Now I’m worried my twins are already over 5.5lbs so by then they will be 7 or over. I was also told they have to be careful inducing previous c section mums due to the scare.

Induction team rang me and today to book me in and are looking like 37+4 to induce I think this is too late and also the second twin is breech. I don’t have an appt again until 36 weeks but I am now wanting a section due to this new info can I ring for an appt with my consultant (it’s a busy nhs hospital)

Absolutely give them a call and get an appointment

ActualHornist · 24/10/2019 19:11

37+4 isn't too late.

You're within your rights to talk to your consultant, but as a twin mum who was induced and gave birth at 36 weeks I'd urge you to keep them in as long as possible.

ThreeLittleDots · 24/10/2019 19:11

YANBU to want to talk to your consultant about having an elective C/S - the risk of induction with previous c/s in particular would be my concern, and the likelihood of an induction becoming an emergency caesarean anyway.

ThreeLittleDots · 24/10/2019 19:12

They may be keen on scheduling surgery for 38 or 39 weeks though, unless you go into labour sooner, obvs.

Thetirednessisreal · 24/10/2019 19:15

They are mcda twins so one placenta so I was always told they want them
Born by 37 and a half weeks

Thetirednessisreal · 24/10/2019 19:18

It’s not that I want them born at 36 weeks I’m concerned about their size, one being breech and the induction risk.

I had twins after a csection

The chance of the scar sitting is 2-3%

ActualHornist · 24/10/2019 19:24

Yes but your actual consultant has already said it's ok to wait. The breech twin may move which is why they'll scan you at 36 weeks. Mine did, although from transverse to head down.

I think you're worrying unnecessarily. It's better for the babies to stay in longer even if you think it'll be better for you for them to come out earlier.

Butterfly02 · 24/10/2019 19:26

I was induced at 37weeks due to hospital policy. Mine were 6lb2oz and 6lb10oz but measured bigger, so don't worry about weights too much. Don't think it matters Re breach unless they are 1st born after you have first one they scan you to check if second is suitable for a natural birth or you have to go on to have a csection. Twin 2 was breach but when twin 1 was born t2 must have flipped round with all the space they can also become breach after first one is born.
Can you arrange a phone call with midwife to discuss your concerns is there a midwife who specialises in multiple births? Good luck.

Crunchymum · 24/10/2019 19:42

If one of the twins are breech then surely it's got to be a planned section? Shock

Thetirednessisreal · 24/10/2019 19:47

No they have said it’ll either turn or they will turn it themselves after the first has been born with the chance of two 7lbers I’m a little apprehensive

OP posts:
multiplemum3 · 24/10/2019 19:51

Only the first twin has to be head down for a natural birth. They can turn the second twin, they'll also strongly suggest an epidural. I had my twins and 37+4, I know it's scary but it's standard care and you'll be fine

HazelBite · 24/10/2019 19:52

Mine were born by section at 37 weeks and were 8lb 4 and 7lb 12 , to be honest I was relieved it was by section as I was exhausted by then. Right up to a week beforehand they were talking about induction and a natural birth, they seem to change their mind at a moments notice, try not to worry Flowers

fairislecable · 24/10/2019 19:54

My twins were born at 40 weeks I had to be induced!

The second one was a footling breech but the consultant was prepared and birth went well.

One was 6lb and the other was 6lb 12.

As a twin birth I was given lots of care and support so much better than when I had singletons.

I have a friend who is obstetrician and she maintains the best time to give birth is at 38 weeks.

goodtoseeyou · 24/10/2019 19:57

With mcda twins is a vaginal birth not very risky?

timshelthechoice · 24/10/2019 20:00

You have a right to speak to a consultant about a ELCS if you're already had a CS, they don't get to dictate how you give birth.

SonataDentata · 24/10/2019 20:10

I can’t believe you’re even considering a vaginal birth, but it’s your decision.

SonataDentata · 24/10/2019 20:12

Sorry - didn’t read the full thread. You have the right to push (excuse the pun) for a C section in this situation. In your position, I’d start making a real nuisance of myself with the doctors.

Thetirednessisreal · 24/10/2019 20:14

I was considering it because they made it sound very straight forward then when I agreed at 32 weeks all was grand then yesterday they stRted changing the goal posts and telling me different info than the previous appt

NaviSprite · 24/10/2019 20:16

I'd definitely push for the consultancy on a planned c-section, much better than getting to the point of needing a potential emergency c-section (like I did with my twins!).

If the hospital is infamously busy on the phone lines could you contact your GP/Community Midwife etc. and get them to make contact as well?

Either way congratulations on your twins OP Grin

RolytheRhino · 24/10/2019 20:17

Hmmm. It's a very tough call, OP. Definitely go for a c section if that's what you want to do.

Loopytiles · 24/10/2019 20:20

The RCOG guidance for doctors on VBAC vs C section has stats etc. I would ask for a C section!

Sweetpeach3 · 24/10/2019 20:21

Your baby's weight is never known I'd say. They was concerned by DD was underweight an I had to have scans every week. I said she's guna be a big baby. They had non of it as she measured small. She came out a good 8 pounds an she was sooooo chunky compared to my dS!
But If your worried give them a call!! if they was worried they would do something sooner and not leave it the way you feel they have left it. But a lot of babies can turn last min if their breach specially if the twin facing the correct way comes out first the second twin will have a lot more room to flip!
Good luck xx

Thetirednessisreal · 24/10/2019 20:26

My first was 8lb7 and at 34weeks he was 5 and half lbs so I think they will follow him lol! I had an emergency section with him as he got stuck so they don’t see why I can’t do vaginal l but twin 2 has been breech the whole
Time no moving so I think it’ll stay breech.

OP posts:
Sweetpeach3 · 24/10/2019 20:40

Funny enough my first was 8.9lbs and he got stuck but I had forceps as I was managing to crown his head but he was back to back an the doctor couldn't grab him enough to pull him out! Just ask for another appointment next week and have your questions wrote down because when you sit infront of them they all seem to vanish! I honestly don't have a clue when it comes to twin births but I'm due Xmas eve with number 3 and I'm just guna take it as it comes (I'm lucky to only be having 2 simple birth Lol) but twins are complicated specially whilst one is breach and you needed an emergency section first time due to your first getting stuck. Would you consider asking them to just give you another section as it would most likely end in that result and it's much more risky with twins! Plus when it's planned it's obviosuly a lot less stressful for you and the baby's!! X
