I was looking if there is a forum about kitchen appliances/household stuff, but don't think there is one... So asking here, what are your absolute must haves?
For the longest time I have wanted a Kitchenaid type standing mixer and an Instapot type electric pressure cookers (the traditional ones scare the hell out of me). DP thinks both are waste of space and money. I am looking to see if I can find cheaper alternatives as love to cook, but don't have that much time, and pressure cooker would make things a lot easier and quicker. Or maybe ehe's right and they would be joining our waffle maker on a shelf, gathering dust? (To be honest, it was a cheap one and is really shit and I hate making waffles with it as it does not heat up and everything comes out soggy).
So, a triple question:
a) what are your fav kitchen devices
b) are these all gimmicks or stuff we actually need (granny and Mum had none of them and used to get by pretty well)
c) any recommendation on either electric pressure cookers / standing mixers welcome!

I love my Smeg blender. I used to have one of the Breville ones and it broke really quickly as couldn’t deal with the ice I used to blend into drinks etc. My smeg one is amazing.

PinkPonyPalace · 24/10/2019 17:54

Instapot, Nutribullet, Magimix food processor are all used a couple of times a week here. Kenwood mixer maybe once a month (Kenwood may not be pretty or a much-coveted brand, but they have great durability, and spare parts are easy to source). Have a Warings blender that is 20 years old and works like new.
Covet a thermomix. Just can’t justify the spend.

My Aga.

willstarttomorrow · 24/10/2019 17:57

Really sad, walk in larder. Not an appliance I know but this is where I will hide all the appliances that are meant to change my life! Also an upstairs utility room.

Confrontayshunme · 24/10/2019 17:58

The MICROPLANE. Seriously. Costs £10, but I use it every day. Zesting lemons, grating parmesan, grinding nutmeg, grating garlic and frozen ginger. My MIL was unconvinced when we bought her one for Christmas, but now she is a convert too.

Also, an ice cream maker for the summer and the Jeni's Ice Cream cookbook. A faff to get down from the loft, but we have homemade ice cream/sorbet once a week all summer and kids/friends love it.

Finally, a good stick blender for soup. No more pouring in batches into a blender.

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 24/10/2019 17:58

@PinkPonyPalace OMG Thermomix!!! My parents have hahd one for years and it's like the best thing ever, one day it shall be mine. Why does it have to cost so much?!

@UrsulaPandress The closest I ever got to an Aga was watching Escape to the Country, but it looks so lovely, would love to cook on one one day!

Ok this post has already increased the list of stuff I want, noting down ice cream maker, and yeah, a pantry would be lovely to keep all of these out of the way.

I bought a pretty powerful kenwood chef and attachments with vouchers we received for our wedding. I am not a big cook, but I have used it loads and loads. Not just for mixing (eg bread, pastry, crumble etc) but for chopping, blending too. It has been brilliant.

This was before Nigella made Kitchen Aids more popular and they came in pretty colours! But my kenwood chef has been brilliant.

Stickybeaksid · 24/10/2019 18:16

Kenwood gets used in my kitchen every week and mine is 11 years old. I have an instant pot. I use mine every week as well. I have found it’s really worth it. I’m using it tonight to cook rice for a curry made in it at the weekend.

NeverPromisedYouARoseGarden · 24/10/2019 18:16

I love a kitchen gadget. Can I suggest you get rid of that shit waffle maker to make space for your lovely new mixer or pressure cooker thing?

I have a KitchenAid mixer. It's many years old and I love it, although if it broke I wouldn't be able to afford to replace it. DD12 loves baking but frequently rejects the KitchenAid in favour of a hand-held mixer or even a wooden spoon. Says she prefers the "traditional" methods! She is young but she will learn.

Hands down the most-used gadget in our house is a breadmaker. And somebody bought us a pineapple corer and slicer thing recently. I generally CBA with preparing pineapple but, my God, this thing is amazing.

VaguelySkeletal · 24/10/2019 18:17

I love my Kenwood Chef and use it frequently. The blender accessory is rarely used, but the mincer is very useful, and the ice-cream maker was excellent while it lasted (the freezer bowl sprang a leakSad)

I frequently use an old-fashioned stove-top pressure cooker and a huge slow-cooker.

Dh loves our Panasonic breadmaker. We've had other makes, but will only get Panasonic now - the difference is amazing.

I covet a walk-in larder and double-door fridge with freezer drawers beneath.

NotMeNoNo · 24/10/2019 18:23

Kenwood chef, mine is in fact a 1960s house wife's dream one and my nan did have one. Makes the difference between cakes and bricks.also the blender is very good.

Panasonic breadmaker. Apart from that a rarely used slow cooker and food processor.

NearlyGranny · 24/10/2019 18:25

I want Fisher & Paykel dish drawers next. You can use one for small loads and both for large. I'd have everything in drawers! I have fridge drawers and they're the best thing since sliced bread. They pull right out, you look down and see everything. No monster doors in the corner, decor panels my DH made and painted to match the existing cupboards. I'd have double if the DC were still at home. Hotpoint do them.

LakieLady · 24/10/2019 18:39

I'd like a Quooker. I love the idea of just turning on a tap and making a cuppa, and no kettle or cable cluttering up the worktop.

I'd also love a Kitchen Aid mixer and processor, a Gaggia coffee maker and (now moving into wildest dreams territory) a Lacanche range cooker, one of the big ones with the simmer oven.

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 24/10/2019 20:03

I have a breadmaker- the Panasonic one as well, but not used it for ages except for pizza dough. Need to start using it again, I love the smell of freshly baked bread in the mornings!

I got a standing mixer from aldi for about £50. I have no idea how it compares to the more expensive brands but it certainly does the job for me. I also have a handheld electric mixer for smaller, quicker things. I have mobility problems with my hands so they're massively helpful

RoyalChocolat · 24/10/2019 20:13

What scares you about a traditional pressure cooker? My mum used it all the time. I use mine at least twice a week. It is very common in French households. The only accident I ever heard about took place in my hometown before I was born and involved a woman suffering from dementia.

I got a Kitchenaid standing mixer for my 30th birthday. Probably my best birthday present ever, but only because baking is my hobby. For occasional cake making a hand held mixer is perfect.

67bird · 24/10/2019 20:27

My son and daughter in law have a hot tap, so nice when I stay there to not have to wait for a kettle to boil for your coffee fix in the morning

FrogFairy · 24/10/2019 20:32

Instant Pot is in regular use, ditto my Bamix stick blender.

Love my Magimix food processor, it has gathered dust for a while but will earn it’s keep when I finally get into the routine of bulk cooking for the freezer. Likewise for my slow cookers.

For small things, I love my Alligator chopper which is a better version of a Nicer Dicer.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 24/10/2019 20:33

I have a walk through pantry. Not going to lie, it's pretty friggin' awesome Grin

gadgets wise, I have a big KA stand mixer, and a large and small food processor, large one with interchangeable blender/processor/scale.

all used regularly.

MsRinky · 24/10/2019 20:33

I love love love my Kitchenaid, and I have a bunch of attachments for it, so it is also a pasta roller, pasta shape press, mincer, sausage stuffer and ice-cream maker.

FrogFairy · 24/10/2019 20:33

Almost forgot my Vitamix, worth every penny.

Keeoe · 24/10/2019 20:42

I dream of a Thermomix. I literally do Halloween Grin My latest must-have gadget though is my Ninja Foodi. Used to have a Pressure King Pro and upgraded to this several months ago. My oven has barely been on since. It's so incredibly versatile, I can do almost everything in it. Saves loads of dirty dishes.

Tartyflette · 24/10/2019 20:56

I'd love a Quooker too, I was in a friend's kitchen the other day, she has one and I was Envy.
I have my Mum's 50 year old Kenwood Chef, it's incredibly heavy sturdy and has all the bells and whistles, dough hook, meat mincer and blender with glass goblet. I think it was very nearly the original model, it has a chunky opaque white bowl (glass? Ceramic?).
So when my Magimix processor gave up the ghost a year or so ago I got the Kenwood one. Cost £££ but has umpteen blades and other attachments.
Still incredibly heavy sturdy but my goodness it does the job. Once I've lugged it out of the cupboard. With the slicer blade and the juicer attachment it made the annual marmalade session a breeze. I still use mum's Kenwood chef for cake making, though.
I saw photos of Nigel Slater's kitchen somewhere and he has a 'gadget station' built-in, in a special cupboard with doors that slide up or down, I think, and shelves that pull out so the gadgets come forward and you use them in that position. All wired in. Very clever.

AdalindMeisner · 24/10/2019 21:01

I have an instapot and a kmix stand mixer (couldn't stretch to a kitchen aid) The instant pot has more than earnt its keep! The stand mixer doesn't get used that regularly but definitely comes into its own when making birthday cakes. Would get used more if it weren't for the washing up involved in cooking/baking and that leads to my must have... a dishwasher.

I haven't had one for 10 years and would happily give my right arm for one. We've just moved and I have told dh that after Christmas I am having a cupboard removed and dishwasher installed whether he likes or not! (he thinks they are a waste of money).
