Bought a yard broom last weekend. Snapped in half first time I used it to sweep leaves, so was returning it for a refund at customer services. Man behind me in queue jokes “You weren’t trying to ride it were you?!”(assuming some kind of Halloween/witch reference as it’s that time of year)
I smiled at him, he smiled back. End of.
Thinking about it now, I’m just wondering how many people would have been offended buy his ‘joke’ and scowled at him?

Me. But then I would have been wearing my best cloak and hat, and would have felt singled out.

Brackish · 24/10/2019 15:24

I would have stared at him and asked him to repeat his hilarious sally while I wondered whether to bother raising a smile.

Honeybee85 · 24/10/2019 15:28

I would have laughed and asked if his wife had gotten the same one and if she could put a spell on him to give him a better sense of humor.

Singlenotsingle · 24/10/2019 15:28

It wouldn't bother me. I'd think what a silly twat he was, but that's all.

Nicolastuffedone · 24/10/2019 15:31

Ach, I’d have laughed. It’s a daft joke.

Dita73 · 24/10/2019 15:32

Don’t worry about it. He’s only having a laugh

LochJessMonster · 24/10/2019 15:33

I'd have laughed. It's a joke. He was making conversation.

FizzyIce · 24/10/2019 15:34

I actually think that’s pretty funny and wouldn’t be offended

Zebraaa · 24/10/2019 15:34

I’d have laughed at someone being friendly enough to speak to a stranger.

BlastEndedSkrewt · 24/10/2019 15:35

i'd of laughed & then pointed put that is being utterly ridiculous as everyone knows we ride vacuum cleaners these days

Blahdyblahblahblah · 24/10/2019 15:37

I found it quite witty and would have laughed. Not sure why anyone would glare at him?

Strugglingtodomybest · 24/10/2019 15:38

I'd have smiled at him, but then, I'm normally the one making conversation with strangers anyway.

msmith501 · 24/10/2019 15:39

It's a joke... it's funny

LittleSF · 24/10/2019 15:39

Given what "ride" means in Ireland I would have whacked him over the head with it Grin

Cuddling57 · 24/10/2019 15:40

I like his sense of humour and like the response above which I would have thought of farrrrr too late!

userxx · 24/10/2019 15:43

I'd have laughed and probably whizzed around the shop on it cackling but I'm a knob who always takes it a step to far.

AryaStarkWolf · 24/10/2019 15:44

Given what "ride" means in Ireland I would have whacked him over the head with it

bahahahaha, my first thoughts too

RosemarysBush · 24/10/2019 15:45

Yeah, I thought it was funny and lightened my day. I'm glad most of you agree. I sometimes worry that everyone's so politically correct/woke these days that you cant make a joke in case it offends.

OP posts:
WagtailRobin · 24/10/2019 15:45

I would have said "Buy one yourself, it's the only ride you'd get."

JE17 · 24/10/2019 15:46

I'd have laughed, wouldn't think of taking offence.

AudTheDeepMinded · 24/10/2019 15:54

My DH was leaving for work one morning. I was sweeping out our porch area (open porch so lots of leaves blew in). He said 'You don't need that, I'll give you a lift'! I thought it was very witty and laughed a lot. It still makes me snigger now.

Oakmaiden · 24/10/2019 15:54

“You weren’t trying to ride it were you?!”

I think that should remain between me and the broom... Wink

MrsSpenserGregson · 24/10/2019 15:54

I think it's funny - I'd have giggled for sure

msmith501 · 24/10/2019 15:55

It's the small things that add a bit of colour to each day...

Mylittlerobin · 24/10/2019 15:55

Yes I would have laughed out loud, political correctness has gone a bit far if you can't take a joke like that, it was quick thinking on his part. I love it when complete strangers have the confidence to make a cheeky joke and take it as a compliment that they think I could take it.
