Bought a yard broom last weekend. Snapped in half first time I used it to sweep leaves, so was returning it for a refund at customer services. Man behind me in queue jokes “You weren’t trying to ride it were you?!”(assuming some kind of Halloween/witch reference as it’s that time of year)
I smiled at him, he smiled back. End of.
Thinking about it now, I’m just wondering how many people would have been offended buy his ‘joke’ and scowled at him?

I'd have laughed. I like interaction with strangers at the till.

You ABU to go on about wokeness and political correctness though.

Chloe84 · 24/10/2019 15:59

I would have laughed.

And all the people with the ‘clever’ comebacks - it’s easy in hindsight!

Wheat2Harvest · 24/10/2019 16:01

I would have laughed and taken it in the spirit in which it was intended.

I doubt that the likely-to-be-offended luvvies would be sweeping leaves in the first place. They'd be paying someone to do it.

This is the sort of innocent remark my elderly dad would make and would be horrified if someone took offence, it's just light humour.

seaweedandmarchingbands · 24/10/2019 16:07

If you are like me, old unattractive and quite haggy looking = still funny but near the knuckle and I would’ve gone home feeling sad

I’m sure you’re far from haggy!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 24/10/2019 16:08

I would have laughed and said that I crashed it as I rode it home.

Ohyesiam · 24/10/2019 16:09

In this post Harry Potter age, how can a witch implication be an insult? Grin

FrenchJunebug · 24/10/2019 16:12

I would have laughed and made an equally silly joke in return.

Jux · 24/10/2019 16:13

I'd have laughed and said "yes!". No real insult there, unless he then went on to tell me he thought I was fat and ugly and that was why he thought I might be a witch and why the broom broke, or something.

I'd have been open to chat with him while waiting in the queue.

Butterflyone12e · 24/10/2019 16:13

I would've laughed and said "Yes I was, can I ask which broom your wife uses?"

CleopatraTomato · 24/10/2019 16:13

I'd have laughed! I love it when simple exchanges are brightened up with a joke or a chat. It's part of the glue that holds society together.

If I didn't find it funny I'd have smiled rather than laughed and if he was rude I would have ignored - but he seemed to be trying to jolly the day along and treat you as a human being. All good.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 24/10/2019 16:15

He was quick witted,I would have said no I've got a motor powered one at home

1forAll74 · 24/10/2019 16:20

I would have laughed also.it's a joke comment.. It sounds like a Northern joke, where people have a funnier sense of humour !

Stationeryqueen · 24/10/2019 16:37

I'd have laughed, and hoped I would have been quick enough to say I had crashed or that I had lost my no claims bonus!

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 24/10/2019 16:38

Why would anyone be offended?

It's certainly not "woke" to be.

It's a crap joke though.

Aprillygirl · 24/10/2019 16:41

I think it's funny. I'd have laughed and then turned him into a frog for being so cheeky.

Livpool · 24/10/2019 16:45

I would have laughed. He was just trying to be witty. People are quick to feel offended these days

catwithflowers · 24/10/2019 16:47

It’s the kind of daft joke my husband would make 🤣. I think it’s quite funny and can’t see why anyone would take offence. He was just being friendly!

Whattodoabout · 24/10/2019 16:53

I wouldn’t have laughed and would’ve found it a bit awkward but not offensive.

Cuppachino · 24/10/2019 17:08

I would've pretended to find his joke amusing and smiled along. He was being friendly.
