To Think DB's Dog Is Actually A Hell Hound?

Because apparently, it's not enough for me to be allergic to her. Over the past four months, she has.

  1. Knocked coffee over my laptop. Said coffee was on the dining table, and the dumb dog decided that she was going to stick her nose in the mug. (She's a chocolate lab, and a walking stereotype for the breed).
  1. Knocked me over whilst I was sat on the sofa and drooled down my ear. Despite my attempts to clean my ear, I ended up with a middle ear infection and lost my hearing for two weeks.
  1. Today, I was playing with DN, when he dropped a piece of lego. Said dog swept in to eat it, and when I got there first, jumped at me, her paw going straight into my eye. I've ended up with a corneal abrasion.

WIBU to hire an exorcist to send her back to the fiery pits from whence she came?

On a more serious note, WIBU to suspect she can sense my allergy to her, and is additionally boisterous as a reaction to that? Because DSiL keeps insisting she's not as bad as this with anyone else. Which is a great comfort when you've got a cold compress over your eye...

Are you living there? If not, why are you visiting?

Apolloanddaphne · 24/10/2019 02:22

I have a Labrador who would do none of those things so i don't think this dog is typical of the breed, it is simply badly trained.

Pixxie7 · 24/10/2019 02:32

How old is he, because if a puppy he sounds like he just wants to play.

Nonameslob · 24/10/2019 02:38

This has made me giggle. Sorry! He loves you, he wouldn't dribble in just anyone's ear! We have one friend out of all our friends who doesn't like dogs and completely ignores our dog. She won't leave him alone, she spends hours trying to get his attention and looks at me confused that he doesn't love her as of course everyone should! So I wonder if he can sense you're trying to keep your distance due to your allergy. Sorry about your eye, that's very painful.

CheeryB · 24/10/2019 02:44

I wouldn't visit. I don't much like dogs but don't mind the ones who leave me alone. My neighbour has 3 labs who are all very tolerable. They are calm and approach slowly, and go away if ignored. I give them a brief ear tickle which seems to satisfy them by way of a quick hello. If a dog is boisterous and bothersome I'm out.

Buddytheelf85 · 24/10/2019 05:37

Number 2 does seem like really bad luck!

AgathaF · 24/10/2019 05:42

I'm not a fan of untrained dogs at all. They need to do some work on this dog, especially since they apparently have a child too.

GeneHuntLover · 24/10/2019 06:10

I also have a chocolate lab, she's beautifully behaved because I've put the time and effort in to train her properly

WhoWants2Know · 24/10/2019 06:11

Is it in any way possible that you were in the early stages of an ear infection when the dog knocked you over and stuck it's face in your ear? Some dogs can smell illness and make a beeline for it.

Beautiful3 · 24/10/2019 06:52

Sounds like a puppy or it needs training. It's not 'bad'. Spend less time there if you don't like it

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 24/10/2019 07:16

Aww... good boi just wants to be your fwend. Sticking nose into hooman's ears is top-level fwendship actions.

Troels · 24/10/2019 07:42

Poor you. DB needs to put a lot more time and effort into traing his hell beast. Who by the way sounds like a very fuuny pup.

Didntwanttochangemyname · 24/10/2019 08:00

A series of unfortunate events.... Or a badly trained dog!

AloeVeraLynn · 24/10/2019 08:04

Dog needs training on how to behave around visitors! I wouldn't allow my lab to do this.

hotdogwoof · 24/10/2019 08:06

I doubt the dog gave you an ear infection.

I wouldn't say it was typical of the breed, just not well trained.

MrsCasares · 24/10/2019 08:09

The dog would have smelt your ear infection and was warning/trying to clean it for you as pp have Sid.

Your db needs to put in some serious training though.

I wouldn’t call an exorcist just yet.

AndAnotherNameChanger · 24/10/2019 08:11

If you're allergic why aren't DB and DSIL at least shutting him away somewhere when you visit?

(Actually this is what most of my friends with dogs do when they have visitors regardless, as they know lots of people aren't as keen on dogs as they are and they don't want their dog getting over-excited and doing any of these kinds of things)

Mishfit0819 · 24/10/2019 08:43

Sounds like the dog needs training and/or perhaps you also need to be able to recognise the dogs behavioural q's to help control the dog whilst it sounds like you are in charge of it. I. E. In a playful dog, if you wriggle to get away and try to push them off then they may think you are engaging in the play and will bounce back twice as hard. A short sharp no will work much better.

The trying to eat lego is 100% training issue though. Labs will try and eat most things if they are left to it without proper training, which will lead to hefty vet bills further down the line for your bro.

FrothyDragon · 24/10/2019 10:02

I've been there each time because I've been babysitting. I've got two young nephews who I adore, and Hell Hound isn't going to stop me from being there for them/helping my brother. Besides, DB and DSiL don't have much support, from either my side of the family or hers.

Nonameslob, don't worry, whilst explaining the latest incident to the doctor, I'd done so with a lot of mirth.

I do agree she's badly trained, and it did stop me from visiting my brother when she was at her worst. She's 3, so she should be out of this stage. Both DB and DSiL work, sometimes long hours, and I do worry it's too much for Hell Hound.

I definitely think she knows I'm trying to keep my distance to a degree, and up until Lego Gate yesterday, she had been sat with me and relatively calm. I don't know.

FrothyDragon · 24/10/2019 10:37

WhoWants2Know that is possible and I wasn't actually aware for that. Thanks for some helpful (and humoured) answers.

Problem with locking HH away is that DBs living/dining area is open plan, and aside from locking her outside, there is nowhere else to put her. Kitchen is out of bounds unless she's eating, because she would find something else to eat.

Despite my jokes about her being a Hell Hound and the annoyance over some of these incidents, she is a well natured dog. Just as hyperactive as the DNs are. Which... Oh my god... They make DS look comatose with their energy levels.

Who looks after the dog while they're working long hours?

Sounds like the dog is bored so gets over excited when others are around

LochJessMonster · 24/10/2019 10:42

Over 4 months? Sounds like a typical day to me Grin

Dogs are clumsy - they knock things over. Bad luck that your laptop was there. Food and drink should really be placed out of dogs reach.
Ear infection - rare and bad luck.

Corneal infection - bad luck. Again, see dogs are clumsy!

All slightly annoying when put together and very bad luck that you had got an ear and eye infection.
Sounds like a typical boisterous lab.

Perhaps training to not jump up on the sofa would help. Leave a lightweight lead/harness on her so you have more control, and teach her a 'settle' command.

Ftumch · 24/10/2019 10:47

My dog can definitely sense the people who are wary of her, and puts a lot of (misplaced and badly executed) effort into making them love her in much the same way as your Hell Hound. So I suspect it's just trying to be your friend - doesn't make it any less annoying though!

We just keep her separated from anyone who is uncomfortable with her now - she is very strong willed so training hasn't always gone well Blush

adaline · 24/10/2019 11:01

I would bet money that you had an ear infection brewing and the dog made a beeline for you as a result. It wouldn't be anything to do with the dog licking your ear.

The rest just sounds unfortunate. I know plenty of people who have lost laptops because of drinks being spilled over them - the fact that it was the dog was just bad luck, really.

The corneal abrasion? Well, it's bad luck really. Yes, thee dog shouldn't jump up like that but what happened to you isn't exactly a common result of being pawed at by an over-excited Labrador.

The dog sounds young, excitable and not brilliantly trained, but I think that's fairly common for a young dog. Most people don't have perfectly trained dogs despite what everyone on here would claim

FrogFairy · 24/10/2019 11:58

I would suggest a long walk with dog and DNs at the start of your babysitting duties in the hope that fresh air and exercise will burn off a bit of energy and make for a calmer day.
