Hide appliances in house photos or not?

Tooearlyforadrink · 23/10/2019 16:33

My house is being put up for sale next week and having photos done tomorrow.

My kitchen counters aren’t cluttered at all but should I put my toaster and kettle away? Would that look more appealing?

Sorry this was meant to be posted in Chat.

Can you take a picture and show us what it would look like?

I left the toaster, coffee machine and kettle out for mine

ThatMuppetShow · 23/10/2019 16:40

I would leave the kettle and remove the toaster.

But follow advice above: take pictures yourself first, and have a look, you might notice a few things that need to be improved.

Tooearlyforadrink · 23/10/2019 16:41

Good idea. Will take a photo now.

I wouldn’t bother but then I’ve never had a house for sale.

If someone is put off a house because they can see a toaster I’d really question whether they’re mentally competent enough to be signing a contract tbh...!

OkayGoooouuuuuullllll · 23/10/2019 16:51

House buyers are fickle things :) if your toaster and kettle are nice ones leave them. I had mine out because I had matching copper kettle, tea caddies, fruit bowl, washing up rack etc.

PawPawNoodle · 23/10/2019 16:51

If I saw a picture of a kitchen on rightmove that didn't have a kettle in, I'd be scared of what sort of people lived there.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 23/10/2019 16:53

Do put down all the loo lids though! Grin

FionaOgre · 23/10/2019 16:54

Less appliances out does set a more aesthetically pleasing scene. I'd say leave the kettle out but put away the toaster and anything else. Stage it like a magazine photo. Most people can see past a homeowners belongings but its all about the look.

BIWitch · 23/10/2019 16:56

I don't have a kettle!

(I'm not weird though - it's just because I have a Quooker)

katkit · 23/10/2019 16:56

depends what the counter underneath looks like. my kitchen needs work, so appliances stayed out.

that's not the point at all

You want the house to sell as quickly and for as much money as possible, so you make it as much of a show room as you can. It works. 🤷

A house with some furniture in it looks better
and as impersonal as possible even better.

ThatMuppetShow · 23/10/2019 17:04

to add
too many appliance only means not enough storage!
So for the photos, and to give the impression of the most functional house possible, you hide stuff.

Butttons · 23/10/2019 17:08

I would clear as many surfaces as possible to make it look as tidy and neat as you can and that your appliances are stored away (obvs not kettle). The buyers of our last house thought there was tonnes of storage space little realising we'd put half our (non kitchen) stuff into a storage unit. I just moved the kitchen appliances out of shot when the photographer came round

ThatMuppetShow · 23/10/2019 17:14

You probably have, but the first thing to get rid of - for photos and viewings - is shoes and bins! Looks awful.

ProseccoIsTheAnswerHere · 23/10/2019 17:16

To be fair as long as it wasnt cluttered, id prob prefer seeing them.
Minimal applicances I'd say!

Wheat2Harvest · 23/10/2019 17:22

I would leave them out (all nice and shiny, of course).

If things like kettles and toasters that are normally out are put away it could make people wonder if there is a reason why (inconvenient plug sockets, not enough space for them and so on).

Polydactyly · 23/10/2019 17:40

Focus on things being tidy and neat. And move anything they want you to.

summersherewishiwasnt · 23/10/2019 17:43

It creates an illusion of space to have less on show.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/10/2019 17:57

It's not normal to keep appliances such as kettles and toasters in cupboards is it?

If you can't keep out small appliances that are used multiple times a day, I'd be thinking that there isn't enough worktop space or the kitchen is badly designed.

to be honest, my own toaster is in a cupboard! The only thing that is out is the kettle, and a bowl of fruit. My kitchen is not especially small either, I just don't like the look of clutter.

Compare the look of similar properties in your area, and see which ones sell faster. The general appearance makes a huge difference when everything else is pretty similar.

Jollitwiglet · 23/10/2019 18:03

If the sides are otherwise clear i would probably leave them out if it's a spacious kitchen. If it was a small kitchen I would probably hide the toaster

Alsohuman · 23/10/2019 18:07

Not true. Who keeps their toaster in a cupboard? Our very expensive KitchenAid mixer is kept on the worktop because a) it’s used every day and b) it’s too heavy to keep lugging in and out of cupboards.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/10/2019 18:09

I'd be astonished if the presence of a kettle and toaster made a significant difference to the sale price or time taken to sell, and surely if someone is aiming for a 'showroom' look, they would be dressing a kitchen with an attractive kettle and toaster?

Being put off a house because a kettle or toaster is on show is quite mad.

BlueJava · 23/10/2019 18:11

Generally the photographer they send round moves whatever is needed so it does't look too bare or too cluttered.
