To look at a house near a big electricity pylon

Obviously no harm in looking but should I just rule this house out? I’m not worried about the health issues (if indeed there are any) as it’s hundreds of feet away. But will it be a problem to sell? Photo attached.

I'd rule it out for the reasons you've stated.

MrsToothyBitch · 22/10/2019 09:12

Would be a deal breaker for me, sorry!

DorisDances · 22/10/2019 09:14

Nope, I'd give that a swerve

TheHobbitMum · 22/10/2019 09:16

If the house was perfect and we'll priced it wouldn't worry me

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 22/10/2019 09:17

They're fugly.

But you should get the property a bit cheaper because of that. Remember it will be harder to sell when you want to move on, as so many people will rule it out completely.

Antler728 · 22/10/2019 09:18

If it worries you it’ll worry potential buyers in the future. We found our perfect home but it was very near to a pylon. I just thought that every headache any of us got in the future I’d be wondering if it was because of it (not rational I know but that’s how my mind works)

CalamityJune · 22/10/2019 09:20

I'm surprised people would even care! It looks surrounded by trees on that side; would you even see them from the property?

If that's the only reason not to buy it and it meets every other criteria I think you'd be mad not to.

speakout · 22/10/2019 09:22

Anyone living in a city will be living very close to all sorts of high voltage supply and electricity distribution services.
In department stores, underground, supplies to subways, trains etc.

They are just simply not visible.

In rural areas they are not so hidden, so people become a lot more alarmed.
Any magnetic or static energy field drops off quickly with distance from the appliance- in the Ops case I wouldn't be worried.

It looks as if the house is surrounded by woodland- I assume you can't see the pylons from the house.

You may get a bargain OP.

HeyMissyYouSoFine · 22/10/2019 09:24

I'd have a look - as there seem to be a large number of trees between the house and pylons so how visible they are isn't clear - then after that decide.

If they are really visible from the house - then it may well put off people buying but this might be reflected in the price - then I suppose it's how long you intend to stay there and how likely you'll need to sell quickly rather than wait for buyer who doesn't care.

Satwatchinganotherswimlesson · 22/10/2019 09:24

We lived near a pylon, I believe all the health issues have been dismissed. However, it did put off a lot of potential buyers when we came to sell. Saying that we did sell it on.

Numptydumptycat · 22/10/2019 09:28

We did years back. It was fine, we sold it since.

underground76 · 22/10/2019 09:32

Every myth about 'health issues' caused by pylons has been solidly debunked, as PPs have explained. Provided it wasn't constantly visible to me and looking ugly every time I looked out of the window, it wouldn't bother me.

WreathsAndRopes · 22/10/2019 09:34

Try and view when it's raining too, the incessant noise would put me off but some people can't hear it.

No it wouldn't put me off for other reasons if it was reflected in the price.

WreathsAndRopes · 22/10/2019 09:36

Oh and although the health issues were a bit of a non-theory, they still come up in searches with a warning which could put buyers off.

GrumpyHoonMain · 22/10/2019 09:39

If living near a pylon or a 3G/4G/5G tower caused health issues there would be epidemics in India and China. In some places in these countries people live quite healthily (assuming they don’t touch the thing) metres away from them. So don’t worry about it. If you like the house then go for it!

Sewbean · 22/10/2019 09:41

I can hear electricity lines humming so it's a no from me. Dh doesn't hear a thing so it wouldn't bother him but living with that low level humming all the time would actually drive me insane. And yes it's worse when it's raining.

theconstantinoplegardener · 22/10/2019 09:45

It's not the pylon itself but the power lines that are the problem, surely? And they appear to run directly over the house. So that would put me off I'm afraid, OP. A pity because the wooded location looks gorgeous!

JorisBonson · 22/10/2019 09:51

I live opposite a pylon which is right in the middle of the road. never bothered me and when we bought the house the sellers had a fair few other offers.

We do a conga round it on new years eve

Disfordarkchocolate · 22/10/2019 09:52

I wouldn't look at it. Far too close to the pylon for me.

Brian9600 · 22/10/2019 11:45

Thanks, everyone. I’m struggling to know what to do as in lots of other ways it’s perfect (on paper anyway).

OP posts:
Idontwanttotalk · 22/10/2019 11:48

I wouldn't consider buying it so, if you do, just consider you may not be able to sell as easily as you would like.

mumwon · 22/10/2019 11:50

dh says that it might interfere with internet reception (?does it)

timeforawine · 22/10/2019 11:55

I live closer than that to pylons, no health issues and barely notice they are there now.
At least this property has the tree cover too

timeforawine · 22/10/2019 11:56

Internet is totally fine (fibre broadband)

safariboot · 22/10/2019 12:00

I'd have to see from the ground, but that wouldn't bother me. I would be looking for a discounted price because of it though.

Directly under the lines, or nearly so, I think would put me off somehow. For one, what if the line broke and fell on the house.
