Friend wants me to do online maths test for job

Usernamqwerty · 21/10/2019 19:03

My friend has been offered a job for which she has to do an online numerical reasoning test to get the job (think it's NHS / similar test in private sector). She's asked me to do it as says she's rubbish at maths (although she has a psychology degree and her maths level is probably about the same as mine - not great but enough to get by!).

Failing that, she also asked me to see if DH would do it for her (A-level maths and economics degree) which I think is a bit CFery...

AIBU to say no? It's just so awkward 🙄. She's asked me a few times before and I've just mumbled an excuse...

For nursing type stuff isn’t the maths used to check people are on the right amount of meds/drips are flowing that the correct rate etc?

Not just cheating but possibly life altering for some poor patient.

FeeLock28 · 21/10/2019 19:48

This is fraud and you'll both be at risk of being found out. Really not worth it.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/10/2019 19:48

The company must be a bit dim if they let people complete a test with no proof that it's the candidate's own work, especially as this thread suggests that cheating is fairly common.

Passthecherrycoke · 21/10/2019 19:50

No singlebitmarried 😆 that’s hilarious. How do you think nurses learn to administer medications? If Dave Jean and Tim all have 10mg morphine sulfate and Ron takes 5mg from Jean how much does Dave have? Lol

I wouldn’t particularly worry about her cheating- gotta do what you’ve gotta do to get a job- but I wouldn’t take the test. As a PP said it’s unsupervised, she can cheat away regardless

DelurkingAJ · 21/10/2019 19:53

We had someone who cheerfully admitted he’d cheated. We fired him for application fraud, I believe. Arrogant arse.

Cohle · 21/10/2019 19:56

Most employers ask you to sit a similar paper in front of them if you make it to the next stage. It will become apparent if she's cheated.

I'd simply tell her you aren't comfortable with it.

Passthecherrycoke · 21/10/2019 19:57

“Most employers ask you to sit a similar paper in front of them if you make it to the next stage. It will become apparent if she's cheated.”

Most employers certainly don’t. Why on earth would you get them to do 2 maths tests, one alone and one in front of you? What a waste of time and money

Difficultcustomer · 21/10/2019 20:05

Yanbu- even if maths doesn’t form a main part of the job this is still cheating. You do not owe her an explanation, just say that you have decided not to do this, will not involve anyone else or discuss it again.

ilovesooty · 21/10/2019 20:06

I suppose i should be surprised that some posters think this is OK but I'm not.

Contraceptionismyfriend · 21/10/2019 20:07

I got my husband to do mine. It was apart of an interview process. At home on my laptop.

Idontwanttotalk · 21/10/2019 20:09

Just get in before she next contacts you about it. Send her a text just telling her that you are sorry but you feel uncomfortable about doing it because it is lying and that you hope she will appreciate that you'd never lie to her and you never lie to others.

VashtaNerada · 21/10/2019 20:09

I would burst out laughing if a friend asked me this, I’d just assume they were joking. There is no way I would do that for someone! If it’s a requirement of the job, it’s a requirement of the job.

RueCambon · 21/10/2019 20:10

@Passthecherrycoke that's how the irish civil service operates. Online tests on your own at home, then if you get through, you go and do more of the same, big hall supervised with a couple of hundred others. I would have guessed uk civil service the same but i don't know.

scousadelic · 21/10/2019 20:13

My son went for a selection centre, having passed a maths test online. He and the other candidates were all then asked to complete a similar test under supervision and one person was removed from the rest of the day because they could not complete it.

Pinkblueberry · 21/10/2019 20:14

I had to do one for my job, but it was in a text centre - the same place where I did my driving theory, so obviously they check your ID and you can’t take anything in and possible cheat. I agree, yes it would be fraud and unethical - but if they’re doing it as an online thing where people can easily cheat it does make me wonder how serious they take it. Sounds like just another box ticking exercise.

Singlebutmarried · 21/10/2019 20:17

@Passthecherrycoke but if you need x mg per kg unless Len Dave and Keith are all the same weight then the doseage will be different no?

Also if a salon drop can run at say 25ml per minute but a potassium can only flow at 10ml per minute and one is in a 300ml bag and the other is in a litre bag then the timings are different.

I’m not in about pre measured drugs, but working out doseage. I believe it’s part of the nurses job to check the doseage are correct.

TheMasterBaker · 21/10/2019 20:17

Is she going to give you a percentage of her salary for doing her entrance exam?

But in all seriousness, no, she needs to do the test herself, it's her job, they'll likely want her to do it for good reason so if she can't manage it, maybe she won't be able to manage the demands of the job. She won't be able to send bits to you to do for her if she gets stuck.

Singlebutmarried · 21/10/2019 20:18

Saline fecking drip ffs

ClockworkNightingale · 21/10/2019 20:20

Singlebutmarried is correct.

However, that sort of (still very simple) maths would be a registered nurse role. Assuming OP's friend has applied for an unregistered nursing role, she will generally only need to calculate things like fluid intake, possibly numbers of tablets in a care setting. If the friend lacks the basic arithmetic skills for these tasks, it's probably best if she takes a different sort of job.

Cohle · 21/10/2019 20:23

It's a screening process. Individuals who do not pass the (unsupervised) first test are eliminated and are not invited to the second stage of the recruitment process where their results are verified.

I assure you there are a great many assessment centres that work this way.

SwanneeKazoo · 21/10/2019 20:23

Please don't, I work with someone who cheated on the practical test for the job and they are a liability rather than an asset to our small team.

kristallen · 21/10/2019 20:26

She studied psychology but didn't manage to learn about ethics?

Use what Rainbow above said. Say you get nervous in exams too and would be even more stressed doing one that could mean she doesn't get the job.

Usernamqwerty · 21/10/2019 20:26

It's not nursing, it's a management role for a private sector supported accomodation type role I believe.

You can’t control whether she gets the hump with you or not. That’s up to her. All you can do is be clear about what you will or won’t do.

NoHummus · 21/10/2019 20:28

Do it, but put the wrong answers. That'll teach her! Wink
